WSJT-X has calibration features for just this purpose. Look it up in the WSJT-x documentation.

Good luck,

Hello
Did you notice a difference in reception between the dx101d and sdr console?

USB Audio Quality

Charlie

Hi all,

I am trying to get my FTDX101D setup for WSJT (FT8) use and I have been successful thus far.  However I notice that the audio spectrum (response) of the USB Audio is far from "Flat",  Whilst connected to a dummy load I see the audio spectrum received in WSJT-X has a lot of gain around 0-250 ~300Hz  and areas of much weaker response along the spectrum up to 3 KHz.
With my TS990 USB audio as the input to WSJT there is a VERY flat response.

I tried taking the audio from the Data connector and feeding this direct to the soundcard of my computer.  It is much flatter but still exhibits an increased response , though not as great and narrow  in the low end.

Has this got something to do with the Audio Codec used by Yaesu ?
Have others seen this?

Any tips would be much appreciated.

Sdr consol by Simon Brown or win4yaesu both work.

The later is a good software integration platform.

Angel,

I plug a monitor and mouse into the radio, and use that as a panadapter. No need for a computer and software. To me, that was one of the benefits to this radio.

Good luck,

Re: RSPdx and 101D

I’m using SDR Console v3 with OmniRig on my FTDX-101D to allow me point and click freq changes, mouse scroll and the much nicer spectrum/waterfall/pana display from my SDRC V3 / Hermes Lite 2 - fed from the RX out port on the FTDX-101D.

I’m using the Hermes Lite 2 as the SDR ears, as I had been using it as an additional RX – but any SDR box should add the same functionality.

I start the PC

Start OmniRig with the FTDX-101D profile

Start SDR Consolve V3

Start the Main Profile I call FTDX-101D

Select/Start the HL2 at 384khz

Click the Start button for the External Radio. (this sync the 2 radios)

Takes all of 3 seconds to do this….

There are some features that of course do not work, or are not in sync, but for the awesome UI that SDRCv3 has – it’s a great place to start!

I went with the SDR CV3 / HL2 pairing as I could not find any good work on my 2 questions below regarding IF choices and benefits

  1. Not sure if the IF is a better place to grab this from, or if there is more functionality going a different route – please let me know!!
  2. Not sure if there is a better way to get to the spectrum or IQ data in the FTDX-101D directly, that would be awesome if it added more features like bandwidth control….

Interesting –

I find the 101D and HL2 to be very close and consistent in initial setup from a db / s-signal perspective with out changing the rx gain in the HL2 to match the 101D.

Fun bouncing between the 101D and the SDRCv3/PC to hear audio quality, yes there is a little bit of delay, but I usually listen to one or the other.

Very easy to unconnect the 2, and run as an aux receiver. Less than a minute of clicks of the mouse.

I will say the HL2 is as sensitive, has great ability to custom set the bandwidth – but still feel that the 101D is the better RX in really tough conditions, this should not be an HL2 vs 101D debate – as it isn’t ment to be or expected. Both have their own design benefits.

SDR Console V3 – is just awesome in its own right…….so is Simon’s Map – if you haven’t seen it yet.

There are plenty of great GUI’s and SDR RX’s that are out there – great part of the hobby is choice, hence why the VFO knob is the most prominent control on any radio – or for these – your mouse!

Re: optimum dnr setting

W0ARM - Alan

Not sure there is such thing as an "optimum" DNR setting.  It would all depend upon YOUR conditions, noise levels, signal strengths, etc.  I adjust mine quite often, depending upon conditions at the moment...

You can quickly set or adjust the DNR "level" at any time, on each VFO separately, by simply long-pressing (about 2 seconds) the [desired] DNR button, until the DNR setting pops-up on screen. Then use the "MULTI" knob to set/adjust to your desired setting.  The pop-up will disappear after about 5 seconds.  Same procedure works for the noise blanker also... Long press the NB button, make adjustment as desired.

One thing to remember is, the DNR setting in not a "level" adjustment, but rather a selection of one of 14 different DNR algorithms (1 - 15).

I've found a DNR setting of 7-9 works great for me, although sometimes it's less, sometimes it's more...  Whatever's necessary to get a nice balance between atmospheric noise reduction and signal readability.  The DNR function was improved greatly after one of the firmware updates (don't remember which one).  They eliminated the "watery" distortion in the lower-numbered algorithms.

Lastly, having your LCUT and HCUT settings at "OFF" effectively makes your receiver audio wide-open, providing the widest "bass" and "treble" response.  With them in "OFF", the settings of the SLOPE adjustments are of no concern, and do nothing, since there are no frequencies selected.  Since there is really no need for "fidelity" in a received SSB signal, there's really no need to "hear" audio above ~3000 Hz, or below ~300 Hz, therefore you can cut the response using the HCUT & LCUT adjustments.

Hi Folks,

Please looking for help.  I'm looking to see if I can using any of these applications to manage and view the ftdx101d receiver using this application spectrum scope?  I'm not interested in using receive ports of a pan adaptor, but just this application.  Is there a way to connect a PC running any of these SDR applications via USB port , with out having to insert the physical pan adaptor box in the middle, between the radio?  I thought I saw a virtual adaptor available using just USB port in the radio to connect to a PC running HDSDR, for ICOM 7610?  I was wondering if there's something similar for FTDX101d, else this is a big limitation for this radio.

Cheers, N2YWL

Re: VC Tune

I forgot to add that by doing that it makes it so much quieter. Normally on any other radio I would turn on and hear the noise and shut it back off because I don't want to hear it. With the 101d and this trick I get to use the radio more..

SDR or Analog?

Barry D. Jacobson

While the FTDX101 is marketed as a hybrid SDR, I believe this refers to the band spectrum display. There are some  advantages to sound quality in analog receivers because the digitizing process creates a stair-step approximation to the signal, rather than a smooth curve. My understanding is that a complete SDR (direct digital synthesis, DDS) system would not require an IF at all, as all filtering can be done digitally, right off the digitized RF signal. Yet the FTDX101 has an IF, and the VC tune seems to be analog with actual variable capacitors controlled by a motor. On the other hand, some filtering seems to be done using DSP, like IF width, and various noise reduction processing. Can anybody explain the architecture and whether the main signal chain is analog or digital or some mix? If digital, how does received voice quality compare to older analog radios?

Thanks.

Hello,

look at the spectrum of the FTdx101 emission (on a websdr or other tranceiver
for example) and you will see that :

If you set 100-2900 or 50-3050 you will see that the sgnal
reached 3200 Hz or more...

There is no problem with other Yaesu like FTdx5000 , FT2000.

Can you verify this on your transceiver and give the serial number
if you have not this problem ?

In France, i see the problem on all FTdx101

that I met on the amateur radio bands.

Best regards,
Ludovic - F5PBG.
