K3 question

Israel Banini

My K3 and P3 was working fine until the K3 starred showing "ERR TFX" I tried search the internet and one place shows it is caused from using the wrong filter for the mode. Another place referenced it being a software error. Can some please help me with this error?

Thanks
Israel

Israel,

That error is noted in my K3 Owner's Manual on Page 70.

ERR TXF (not tfx)  Invalid transmit crystal filter bandwidth
The crystal filter selected for TX (with CONFIG: FLTX) is either too narrow or too wide. You must specify a filter
that is 2.7 or 2.8 kHz wide for CW/DATA/SSB, 5 kHz for AM and 13.0 kHz for FM.

I suggest using the K3 Utility to check the settings of your installed filters.  Fred Cady's User Guide for the K3 & P3 (3rd Edition)
has a good write-up on the K3 Utility and filter setup starting on Page 24.

Hi Israel,,

The K3 assembly manual states the following:

Turn to the Crystal Filter Installation and Setup section of your Owner’s Manual and perform the following
procedures. If you have installed standard Elecraft 5-pole filter(s) you will need the FREQ OFFSET data you
recorded earlier on page 14.
 Filter Bandwidth Setup
 Filter Center Frequency Setup
 Receive Filter Enables
 Filter Loss Compensation
 Transmit Filter Selection

The transmit filter selection setup requires that you select a valid transmit filter for each
mode. If you fail to do so, you will see ERR TXF and have no RF output when you attempt
to transmit.

I thought someone at Elecraft mentioned a way to use the FM filter under SSB at some time in the past. That was many years ago, Is there a way to do this?

I believe that just by taping the XFIL button you can change the filer being used

Hi,
Thanks for the info, I have tried that. It shows only two filters, while I have three... I need to learn how the filter process works for adding and removing filters.

People used to use the am filter for wide SSB.  This was commonly called lying to the k3. And fm filter for am, same deal.
The only thing controlling your transmitted bandwidth would be microphone and transmit EQ.

Israel Banini

Thank you all for your help.

Doesn’t that only affect the filter used for receive?

I was under the impression that the transmit filter choice was  fixed by mode.

I’m guessing there may be a way to ( command or hardware??? ) change that.

Usually ERR TXF is from attempting to do FM with no FM filter. (or the filters are not setup correctly).
If you don't have a FM filter installed, just set config menu "FM MODE" to off.
If you have one, make sure ALL your filters are setup correctly using the K3 Utility. You must have a 2.7 with offset, or 2.8 with no offset,  set for TX for all modes except AM/FM.

If you have an AM and or FM filter, set them for LSB and USB receive, then use "TX ESSB" for wideband TX/RX (crank WIDTH full wide). See manual.

** A very handy feature, kinda hidden, is to go into the config menu, any FLxxx menu (except FLTX xx),  then Tap XFIL(6) and you can toggle the -receive- thru *ALL* filter slots, even empty ones!!
This is good to see if you have a filter installed that is not setup. (TX filter does not change).
