K3 LINE IN Levels

John AC4CA

I recently replaced a station computer (Win10 PC). The new sound card worked perfectly in DATA A mode, with the 5th ALC segment just flickering at a MIC GAIN of 21. Suddenly, I was able to drive the K3 "to power" only with extremely high (~55) MIC GAIN. There is no ALC action except the three left-most segments flickering in unison. Scope shows no distortion or clipping. Signal reports all good. No complaints when requesting critical reports. I'm driving LINE IN from a microHAM MKII, which has delivered flawless service for over 10 years. I have not reset the audio levels in the MKII simply because the current levels drove LINE IN beautifully before things went downhill. My thought was 1) Find out what range LINE IN expects, reasonably 2) measure the MKII LINE voltage and if necessary then tweak the audio levels as directed in the MKII documentation. I would do so perforce, except that the audio levels were perfect before. So, I'm wondering if the K3-KIO board is sick. Before making that determination, and before calling Elecraft, I thought I would inquire here about expected LINE IN levels.

Windows has a nasty habit of changing audio levels on you.  Don't be surprised if that's what happened.

I use a utility called Quickmix. It snapshots your Audio settings, and allows you to recover them using a single click...

Many thanks to both Mitch and Dave. Indeed, Win10 had dropped my Earphone microHAM CODEC level to some indefinitely low level. I reset it to a reasonable level using Sound Control Panel. Voila... I am now driving the K3 to power with a MIC level of 11, with proper ALC behavior and a "flickering fifth" meter segment. I immediately saved  the result with QuickMix. Cool. You guys are my heroes. 73 John
