Front end protection of RSP1a connected to K3 IF out

Rene Correa, K5JX

I recently acquired an SDRPlay RSP1a that I want to connect to my K3’s IF out jack to set up a panadapter. In the course of my research, I learned of the DX Engineering Receiver Guard Electronic RF Limiter DXE-RG5000HD and similar products. For the time being, my plan is to not connect the SDR to a separate receive antenna, but simply run a 12-inch jumper from the K3 to the RSP1a antenna jack. Any thoughts/suggestions regarding the necessity of  a Receiver Guard or similar product in my planned situation?
Many thanks & 73.

None needed as long as you feed the SDR from either IF Out
or RX ANT OUT.

I would add a Buffer stage or it might Load down the IF Signal.

This happened to me on my K3 and the Soft-Rock.

I tried that with my SDR.  RSP1.  Seems to me the signals were inverted from what they should be, USB as seen as LSB etc.  Been awhile since i tried it so i don't remember all the details.  Aniway i have a MFJ 1708B that does the trick for me.  I don't run over 100W so it's safe for the SDRPlay.

I used to use a SDR2 (with HDSDR) with my K3S a while ago and had no real problems. I seem to recall that everything was OK on HF bands but 6m band was inverted and I had to “flip the switch” in HDSDR to display the correct sideband. I also seem to recall having to tweak the frequency offset slightly. Worked absolutely fine even with 100W out.

In HDSDR -> Options (F7) -> RF Front End frequency options ...
*Check* "Mirror RF Spectrum for Tune >= 40,000 KHz

That will automatically account for the K3 inversion on 6 Meters.

I’ve been using the MFJ 1708 successfully, but there is a review of the RXAudite in this month’s QST that looks interesting

Thanks for the comment, it clarified my memory a little. It is all a bit academic now as the K4 does it all for me.
I do seem to recall that one of the issues I had with HDSDR was when using my external 2m transverter (28MHz IF), configured to display 144MHz frequency display on the K3S, switched to the wrong sideband on HDSDR as I suspect it thought the frequency was above 40MHz.
I ended up running with the K3 display as 28MHz with the transverter which was fine.
