MH4 Schematic

N2MS

Since the MH4 is backordered I want to see if I an use one of my ICOM microphones with my K3.  Where can I find a schematic of the MH4?

I wish the amateur radio manufacturers would standardize on a 8 pin Foster mic plug standard.

Thanks and 73,

Mike N2MS

The Icom and Elecraft pinout are different. The Elecraft uses the Kenwood wiring not Icom.

There is one difference between Elecraft and Kenwood mic wiring.

Elecraft puts +8V (10 mA Max) on pin 6
Kenwood puts +8V on pin 5 (RX audio on some models).

This doesn't make a difference if using a Kenwood dynamic mic (e.g.
MC-43 hand mic) but if you try to use one of Kenwood's "Desk mics"
(with an internal preamplifier) you will need to rewire the mic plug
(or microphone base) to use with an Elecraft K3/K3S/K4.

I have used the Kenwood MC-60 with both my K3s and K4 without problems. I have not rewired as suggested by W4TV.

The MC-60 is a dynamic microphone. The Kenwood desk stand contains
an optional preamplifier. If the MC-60 is used without the Kenwood
stand, the preamplifier (mic amp) is not used, or batteries are
installed in the Kenwood stand, the +8V connection is not needed/not
used. If the preamplifier is used, the +8V connection must be
modified or batteries must be installed.

The MC-50 is a dynamic microphone with no preamplifier in in the
stand and the +8V connection is not used.

The MC-80 is an electret element and requires either the +8V or
must have batteries installed.

The MC-85 is an electret element and requires either the +8V or
must have batteries installed.

The MC-90 is a dynamic microphone with no preamplifier in in the
stand and the +8V connection is not used.

The MC-42S and MC-43S are dynamic "hand mics" and the +8V connection
is not used.

MC-47 is a dynamic "hand mic" with 4 programmable function keys.
The +8V connection is not used.

MC-44, is an electret "hand mic" with 4 function keys. The +8V
connection is required (and must be modified for use with an
Elecraft transceiver).

MC-44, MC-45, and MC-48 are electret "hand mics" with DTMF encoders.
The +8V connection is required (and must be modified for use with an
Elecraft transceiver).

Personally I don't mess with "MIC BIAS" settings that could be forgotten if I change the microphone. In all my Elecraft-compatible microphones that have electret, I added a 5K6 resistor between pin 1 and pin 6.

If it is a dynamic microphone, it will "just work".

If it is an electret, the 5K6 resistor will also make it "just work".

Pinout of the microphone plug is on page 13 of the manual. For the K3, it is all straight forward: MIC, PTT and ground are all listed.

If your microphone has UP and DOWN buttons, they also can be connected per K3 manual. Note the MENU:MIC BTN setting in that case. Note that the FUNCTION button doesn't do anything.

So it's all simple with the exception that you may need to change the wiring in the 8-pin MIC plug, per K3 manual description.

For the KX3 (and KX2), the UP/DOWN buttons work via the PTT contact, but with resistors of 4K7 or 10K in series

This is incorrect. The DC on a dynamic element will further reduce the
already low signal output. The DC on the coil of the dynamic mic can
cause irreversible damage. In addition, unless the transceiver mic
input includes a blocking capacitor, the voltage can upset the operating
point of the microphone preamplifier causing distortion that can not be
"fixed" by adjusting the mic gain.

Which is why I wrote *on all microphones that have *electret*, I added a resistor".

There is no danger of BIAS on a dynamic microphone because the MIC plug of a dynamic microphones does *not* have said resistor.

In fact, you stand a higher chance of making this mistake with the MIC BIAS settings because you need to review and correct the setting every time you change the microphone. In my case, it is "always right" because MIC BIAS is always off.

In addition, unless the transceiver mic
input includes a blocking capacitor, the voltage can upset the operating
point of the microphone preamplifier causing distortion that can not be
"fixed" by adjusting the mic gain.

Using the published schematics of the K3 (and the K3s, K2, and the KX3, and the KX2), can you prove your statement?
