K3S Error KP1
Error KP1 on the K3 is a KPOD error, usually from RF in shack.
High SWR could put RF energy in your station. Unplug the KPOD at the radio to clear the error. Try chokes on the KPOD cable, or a shorter cable etc. Keith WE6R K3/K4 Tech |

Thanks Bob & Mike. Good advice. Yesterday when this occurred, it was from a cold start. Exciter was started KPA1500 was off. K3S displayed high SWR. As Mike said, the swr indication is the last in the chain. Most notable however was the lack of exciter power to drive the amp which most probably was due to power turndown from high swr. The issue cleared itself after about an hour and has not reoccurred. Ran Bob's suggested tests today. All seems ok. It is possible it was caused by a SteppIR antenna issue. - stuck relay, etc. I did notice a couple of amp fault flashes. Weather was in upper 20's.
All seems normal today. Ran checks while changing bands at low power and high power with amp on. 73, Jim |

Bob, K4TAX found the code's interpretation.
The fact that the problem healed itself after
a time suggests a thermal sensitivity.
I would try the radio from a cold start into
a dummy load, and check for the error
code/high SWR reading with TX PWR
set first to less than 11 watts, then again
with TX PWR set to 50 watts. Keep
repeating that experiment periodically
over a couple hours.
The high SWR indication would not emanate
from failed transistors in the PA - the SWR
measurement circuit is the last in the chain
to the antenna connectors unless you have
the inboard ATU option.

From the KPA500 manual, "if the K3 interface cable is used to connect the KPA500 to the K3 the fault numbers will be displayed briefly on the K3 LCD display". Could this be a contributing factor? The KP1 means "excessive power output or excessive
reflected power".

Symptoms were high SWR. I thought the K3S driver or one of the finals had blown. Low output. It remained for about an hour and suddenly problem disappeared. I sent a query to Elecraft tech. Waing on answer. I had visions of sending radio to Elecraft until it cleared up.

Jim,
What are the symptoms aside from the error code?
Under what conditions was the error code displayed?

Cannot find KP1 Error in K3S manual. What is it? Does it need to go to hospital?
