Options question

Ned Mountain WC4X

Just inherited a K3  (SN 68xx) from a SK.

Is there a way to tell what options are installed without physically opening the radio?

Suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

Ned

If you power it up, you can step through the setting and it will tell you if the module, option, or accessory is installed with one caveat: if it’s in there but not seated properly or unplugged, it’s not going to show.

I have owned #139 since new without a problem apart from cracked knobs which were replaced by Elecraft and posted to ZL and landed  over 11 months ago only to vanish and I have yet to receive them but thats another story :(

It has the SYN upgrade, 100 watt amp and DVR.

Bite the bullet and buy it I say!

You may want to download the K3 utility to update firmware. The utility will also let you know what filters are in the radio, and will list many, if not all, of the options. I'm wording this poorly; however, it will be more clear to you if you see the K3 utility.

Peace,

Go to the Elecraft website, download their utility program.  Connect the pc to the K3, open the com port and connect.  You can do several things then, set the clock, read what software is inst. Etc.
There was a other program if I can see it on my other computer tomorrow that will read what's in the radio and display the info.  Right now I'm in bed recovering from a tuff day so can't do anything for you and my memory doesn't remember either.  Hang in there and you will get a good answer.  Good radio, I own a K3 and KX3.  The K3 is tops especially if it has two receivers.  You'll learn to love it.

Only nine screws to take the lid off and have a look. I assume you also inherited the owners manual. Downloading the assembly manual is also a good idea.

Stepping through the config menu will tell a lot about installed items and the K3 utility will make it easy to see what filters are installed.

Thanks all for the suggestions.  As a K3s and KX3 guy, I should have remembered the config software.  However, when I applied power to this K3 --with nothing connected except power---It immediately shows "ERR PTT"  Any suggestions on troubleshooting this?  I did pop the cover and everything looks good inside, but have not done any serious investigating so far.  Comments appreciated.

Indicates that PTT is asserted at power up. Check the front panel mic jack for damage. There’s a PTT IN RCA jack on the rear panel. Make sure that’s clear. That’s about all you can do from the outside.

You can download the K3 schematics from the Elecraft website. Also the K3 kit assembly manual might help identify parts and how to get inside.

Good luck & 73,

That’s not a indication of failed updates is it.

A simple google search provides this subject in the past. Possibly a logging program closing PTT
