K3 Will Not Power Off

Dave Weiss

Hi Keith:

I just experienced the blank screen issue and found that toggling the "alarm" off/on and the screen issue stgopped!

Thank you!

From my notes;

Radio won’t power off or on correctly, stays on Powers on by itself.

Got into MENU for “ALARM”, toggle on/off by tapping 1. Exit menu and try cycling power. Try again.

Or it could be a bad switch Q2 on the RF board. Or Q2, Q3 or Q6 , or U11 on Front Panel, FP.

I had similar problem.

It was a setting for the radio to turn On/ Off at a Certain time.

Can remember what it was called.

Hope you have it fixed by the time you receive this.

My initial thought would be to check for voltage on pin 8 of  the 15 pin ACC connector.  If this pin is pulled to ground, it turns  the K3 on.  During normal operation, it is supposed to be floating at around 12 volts.   I assume if it is grounded, the K3 will not turn off.

It has the Elecraft KPA3 12V Sense Modification done with addition of diode, but will still not turn off after using it for a while.

Any ideas

Ed,
Check pin 8 on the ACC.  If that is toggled low, it powers on the K3 (and K4).  In that use, 100 ms is long enough to power on the rig.

If it is left low, this situation you’re seeing, could happen.

Hello Anthony,
Our club also has a K3 that occasionally does not power off.  The K3 is used with the RemoteHamscom software as a remote station.  It shuts off fine when commanded to do so remotely, but when the physical power button is pressed in the shack, it goes into a strange mode where the display stays on but goes blank.  Removing the 13.8V DC is necessary to turn off the K3.  I brought the K3 home to try and evaluate the problem, and it will not fail in my shack.  One difference is that here in my shack, I don't have the RS-232 and ACC cables connected.  When weather improves, I intend to return to the shack and test it with the cables connected and disconnected.  If I discover anything else, I will let you know.
I was not aware of a KPA3 12V sense modification.  Where can I get more information about the mod?
