K3 Inventory Software ???

Randy Hall <listk7age@...>

Hi,

I bought my K3 used about 10  years ago and I can't remember what options are installed in the radio.

Is there any software that provides an inventory of what is installed?

Randy,

If you go into the CONFIG menu and scroll through, you should get a good idea of what is and isn't installed.

Installed options will have their configuration settings. Uninstalled/missing components will read either "n/a" or "not inst" or "not installed".

Hope this helps.

The three K3_EZ files are also available in this forum. They can be found in the files section with a quick search. It looks like the files were uploaded by N7US in 2017.

The author N2BC was my best friend in high school. He had the call WB2LUR at the time and my call was WA2VOL. We had a lot of fun with amateur radio at that time which was the mid 1960s.

Ray,

In case you haven't tried it, Windows 10 has a Compatibility Mode and Compatibility Troubleshooter.

Right click the program you want to run, select Properties and then Compatibility. You can select any version of Windows from Windows 95 to Windows 8. I don't know if this works for K3_EZ. Windows 10 can even run DOS programs using a program called DOSBox.

I haven’t had any problems getting K3_EZ versions 5, 7, or 8 to run on Windows 10.

I uploaded all three versions (8 has some bugs – I remember one with the microphone settings) to

https://groups.io/g/Elecraft-K3/files/K3_EZ in 2017.

Remember that they were developed in the 2010-2012 time frame, so firmware or other changes since then aren’t going to be recognized.  I have and like VA2FSQ’s Win4K3Suite, which is kept up to date.

Ray,

K3_EZ doesn't install like the typical Windows application. Yesterday I installed K3_EZ_V2008 on my backup computer which is running Windows 10 version 20H2.

The program does not show up in Program Files or Program Files (x86). It appears to run from a small program in the Windows Startup Folder. That program accesses the K3_EZ folder that was extracted from the K3_EZ zip file.

After installation, K3_EZ did appear in the Windows Start Menu. It also appeared in the Control Panel section where you can uninstall programs. The Windows Startup Folder is typically accessed as shown below. Make sure your Windows settings allow you to view Hidden Files and Folders.

C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

I downloaded K3_EZ_V2008.zip to my Windows Download Directory and then extracted all files to a folder in the same directory. The program was installed by running setup.exe. After running the program a small configuration file was created in My Documents.

Ray,

Here is the original announcement for K3_EZ from 2009. Note that you need .NET Framework 2.0 or greater for the program to run.

https://www.mail-archive.com/elecraft@.../msg69519.html

To check your .NET Framework installation, go to Control Panel, Programs and Features, and then click on "Turn Windows features on or off". A Window should appear labeled "Windows Features".

You mentioned a K3 zip file but didn't mention whether it was K3_EZ. Here is what I would suggest. Check your Start Menu to see if K3_EZ is already installed. Also check the Control Panel, Programs and Features, and see if K3_EZ is listed.

I would uninstall K3_EZ if it is shown and proceed with a new installation. Download a new copy of K3_EZ.zip from the files section in this forum. The latest version is K3_EZ_V2008.zip.

Extract all files which will create a K3_EZ folder. Then run setup.exe from that folder to install the program. K3_EZ should open after a short delay and it should be listed in the Start Menu. In addition, it should be shown in the Control Panel, Programs and Features, where it can be uninstalled.

I just installed K3_EZ on my second Windows 10 computer and it wouldn't work until I installed .NET Framework 3.5. The program did prompt me for the installation.

Windows 10 comes with .NET Framework 4.6 or higher. NET Framework 3.5 is shown as an option if you go to Control Panel, Programs and Features, Turn Windows features on or off.

My other Windows 10 computer which was an upgrade from Windows 7 had .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8. K3_EZ installed without problem on that system.

I also found out where K3_EZ installs.

C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Local\Apps\2.0\BHT4D7VG.G6A\L3K005BE.14R\k3_e..tion_ded1fdb169fce31d_0002.0000_3dddc24774d0b83a\K3_EZ.exe

K3_EZ is located in the Windows Start Menu as shown below.

C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

I'll add two comments on K3_EZ that might be of interest.

It looks like you can install K3_EZ directly from the zip file without extracting any files. All you need to do is open the zip file and double click on setup.exe.

K3_EZ installs at location C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Local\Apps\2.0 and the zip file is no longer needed.

I checked the Windows Registry and K3_EZ does add registry keys. Some remain even after uninstalling the program.

My system has quite a few entries under \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\VB and VBA Program Settings\K3_EZ. Registry keys are provided for AGC, COLOR, and Setup.

It looks like K3_EZ was written in Visual Basic.
