Out Band
Mel Marcus
All I have operated the k3 band limits program and haves tested it. I have a legal need to operate in the 7600 to 7700 Mhz range. When I dial or insert the frequency , and then hit xmit or tune, it tell me out of band. Is there a way that I can operate the k3 in the above freq range. Mel NE9A

I think you’ll need an outboard microwave transverter to operate on 7.6 to 7.7 GHz.

And NITA is not going to be happy if he does.

Me thinks the decimal was missed and thus the frequencies of operation needed is 7.600 to 7.700 Mhz range. For this the MARS MOD is needed. Best 73 Milt AD5XD On 2020-04-09 4:12 PM, Charlie T, k3ICH

Elecraft will supply a firmware change that allows out-of-ham-band operation to Mars members. Suggest you contact Elecraft support for details. 73, Brian, K0DTJ

Milt Thanks for you reply. Are you sure there is a MARS mod for the K3. At one time when I asked about it, they said that the is a program to run that opens the unit up. I have that program and executed and ran the test enclose in that program suscessful. but please update me to if there is really a MARS mod. Mel NE9A

I meant software patch not mod. My impression was that the program open the K3 up to become a general coverage transceiver. This being said, the 7.600 to 7.700 Mhz range is real cloe to the IF frequency so this range may be blocked. I would ask the Elecraft Tech Support folks about this. I have the program and used it successfully when I had a K3 (I have a K3S now) when I was in Army MARS.
The one I have might not be the latest, so request it from Elecraft (and they’ll ask for a copy of your MARS license, I think).

General coverage RX is a separate option that costs $, and it definitely doesn't let you Xmit out of band. 73, Chris NU1O

If you mean 7.6 to 7.7 Mhz then you need to apply the MARS modification which is a firmware obtained from Elecraft you will need to provide a reason, if MARS your MARS call sign. Also in that region you will need to turn down the power to 12 watts because it is close to the I.F. frequency of the K3. It won't output using the 100 watt amp.

If you contact them Elecraft they can provide a software patch to enable Tx outside the normal amateur bands.
With the patch enabled, Tx on my K3 is still inhibited between 7.650 and 9.000 MHz. As someone else has pointed out this is probably due to the proximity to the Intermediate Frequency. 73 Norman - GM4KGK |
