Alternative for K3 TCXO?

Geert Jan de Groot

I see that the K3 TCXO is now also unavailable. Does anyone have experience with some of the alternative offerings as listed on Ebay?

As to the KAT3A tuner that was discussed earlier here, order status now lists it as "backordered 3/5/20"

Michael Harris

I queried a good while ago who the manufacturer of the TCXO was and Elecraft wouldn't say. Maybe if they are no longer stocking the item they might loosen up.

I bought a 'cheap' 1 ppm TCXO from a Chinese site on E bay.  It worked OK as far as I was concerned.

I built my own using a thermistor and a transistor/resistor to heat up the crystal can, insulated with foam.  Set it for about 105 F.  Works fine.

That looks pretty nice.  Have you had any feedback from anyone trying these out?

What applications were they using these with?

Would they be usable as a replacement for a defunct Xtal oscillator in a receiver?

I tried one of the customized TXCOs on eBay, seemed like a reasonable chance at $20.  Didn't work.

Frequency on my scope (200mhz scope) appeared correct, but the oscillator output was too low (9 mv p-p).

I tried to contact the vendor, but there was no response from them after a couple weeks.
I was able to get my money back though...

I'm currently experimenting (again) with a home-brew oven...

Where is it made?

Mike, why didn't you just add a FET stage untuned to get the level up, 6 parts dead bug.

Not something I normally get involved with, so, please satisfy my ignorance: what are the main parameters we are looking for, is it just temperature stability, drift, low noise, all of the above? What temperature range ?

I just thought that for $20 (custom made in China, ~2 month delivery) it might be a worthwhile experiment to increase the reference oscillator stability (advertised as 0.1ppm).  My guess is, for this high of a frequency that the vendor’s circuit doesn’t doesn’t have a lot of gain.   Perhaps there are other reasons it didn’t work.

The other thing I didn’t know about was if the K3’s Frequency Calibration would work.

I didn’t test the amplitude of the stock oscillator (long story).

As for making an amplifier stage, I didn’t want to get into it...

And not to clutter the list up very much with off topic stuff or anything, but some response is warranted.  The big explosion of cases in NY appears to be from Europe and other parts of the USA.  Believe what you want.  The facts don't support what you're saying.  As always, China does what's best for China, but that's not new.

Hi,

Come on! Where do you think those Europeans and the other parts of the US got the virus from? That the virus started in China and has since spread to all the rest of the world is accepted science even in China. Period. Oops, there is that P word again, but I will not apologize for being "rude", nor for being super OT

Was going to write the same thing but I knew somebody else would chime in.

Yeah, CCP Virus is now the fault of those Italians.  It's pasta that caused the virus and not bats served at wet bars.  He must work for a Red Chinese company.
