Takes a sharp set of elbows and an uncaring attitude to make it through the crowds. The farthest bathrooms generally aren’t too bad, but then it’s been ten years since my last appearance. And I think they are contracted with Hara for the next several years.

This year is the first time for me. It's been great meeting some of the guys I've worked (especially the Contesters and the folks from CWOps), Contest U rocked ..and it is worth the flight just to hear W3LPL chat ...but they weren't kidding about just how bad Hara Arena is. It's best days were forty plus years ago ..and I suspect they weren't so great then! Foul bathrooms ...a lot of areas were crowded and hot and ummmmm ..some hams do NOT have the best hygiene. Didn't see much of real interest in the flea market ...but I'm not really a boatanchor kinda guy. Elecraft booth was very busy ...got a chance to look at the K3S ... on a purely visual level ...it looks a bit .cleaner/tighter ...but not a huge difference. I'm also interested in a SteppIR ..found their rep to be more ..salesman-ish than technical ..but to be fair ..I was just generally irritated by the mass of humanity, so it could have been me. I did order the Expert Amps 1.3K ...man that thing is light. Tried to attend the Antenna forum, but it was SRO and I was just out of patience. Hamvention seems like a great place to see the latest and greatest .DXEngineering has all sorts of stuff I'd like to check out .. but it's hard to get much time to play with anything and to be honest ..my needs are specific enough, that I want to take time and care with what I buy ..and the enrionment isn't conducive to that. Yes, when I went back for the Hamvention a couple years ago I did notice that the Hara Arena had gotten noticeably dingier than what I remember from when I lived in the Dayton area back in the late 70s. But I didn't find that it detracted from the experience. I don't go there to admire the decor! :=)

I have been to Dayton four times 2009,2010,2012 and last year 2014. It is a
great Hamfest if you can overlook the crowds and the run down facility.
Hara Arena is indeed a dump. When I see people that have come to the
Hamfest from far parts of the world I am a little embarrassed that this facility
is the
best America can offer. I think we could do better.

The Hara is about the same as last year.. VERY wet floors in the bathrooms.. part of which is a case of "bad aim" - and the rest humidity finding nice tile surfaces to condense on. but with it running out of the door way, I suspect more splash and less drop....
Sharp elbows are required. People (some on a scooter) will stop without warning to drool in the middle of an isle, even while others are trying to get through that section. Outside? They stand there until soaked... (Yep, heavy rain occasionally.)
LOTS of keys on display everywhere.. almost enough to get me to learn code... KK4QDZ - Now with Extra Class Priv's, and a tiny KX3 to enjoy them!

Dear Grant,
The reason for this is that “no ham wants to pay more” to get a better
facility. Not even 1 penny!! When I used to work at Madison Electronics in
Houston(God Bless the Busick Family) hams would call around to every store that
had a 1-800 free number and only buy at the store that was the cheapest, if only
by 1 cent!!

One of the guys in my contest club, who had multiple tours in
Afghanistan, summed it up nicely:
You know it's bad when bathrooms in Afghanistan are nicer than the ones here at Hara arena!
Does anyone remember the raw sewerage spewing out of the parking lot
about 5 years ago? I think it was due to some "bathroom" plumbing
issues.
Yes...the facility sucks. Don't get me started on the guys with the
scooters. Another friend was run into a couple years ago and ended
up with an infection and some serious medical problems.
The problem is that the DARA has no other choice in Dayton. If the
Hamvention were to move somewhere else they would lose their cash
cow overnight.

The Hara is about the same as last year.. VERY wet
floors in the bathrooms.. part of which is a case of
"bad aim" - and the rest humidity finding nice tile
surfaces to condense on. but with it running out of the
door way, I suspect more splash and less drop....
Sharp elbows are required. People (some on a
scooter) will stop without warning to drool in the
middle of an isle, even while others are trying to get
through that section. Outside? They stand there until
soaked... (Yep, heavy rain occasionally.)
LOTS of keys on display everywhere.. almost enough to

Yes,

If the basics, like bathroom facilities are bad where the cans are clogged and raw sewage is on the floor, that is a place I stay well away from.
Sounds like a dump.
I've never been there and from what I hear, I never want to go there.

Yes, when I went back for the Hamvention a couple years ago I did notice that the Hara Arena had gotten noticeably dingier than what I remember from when I lived in the Dayton area back in the late 70s. But I didn't find that it detracted from the experience. I don't go there to admire the decor! :=)

The XYL's report on the restrooms: One woman who was leaving a stall told her, "This one actually flushes." Oddly, the mens' room over by the room where the Drake presentation was held, was kept fairly clean, considering the amount of traffic. The one that the XYL had used was in the main, dingy, dimly-lighted arena.

Many years ago we had our main hamfest at a place called Ft. Tuthill. Over the years went Ft. Tuthill went downhill also. The last year they had the hamfest I went to it with my xyl. The building was a mess, the toilets were dirty and backing up, food was not too bad, but I have had better. It was a mess. To add insult to injury I was told that the place was going to have a increase in price the next year to use it.... Ft. Tuthill is no more, it is now Williams. Maybe it is time to move the Hamvention to another location in Dayton, or screw Dayton and find another city/town like we did and Arizona. Change the city/town and let everyone know it is DARA under a new flag and a cleaner place and they will come and who know maybe even more will come because it will be cleaner.
Just a thought.

Perhaps Joe. If that's a viable option then DARA needs to look into
it. It's likely a case of, "we've always done it this way so why
change?"
I can imagine the City of Dayton would lend a hand keeping the
Hamvention in their city. It has to be bringing in some pretty good
dollars to an otherwise struggling area.

It's been a while since I lived in the area but I strongly
suspect
DARA could find facilities capable of handling Hamvention
at the
University of Dayton (UD Arena) or Wright State University
(Nutter
Center) and adjacent facilities. It might cost more and
they might
need to change the date but I certainly believe they could
find
suitable space in the Dayton area to replace a decaying
Hara.

Other than leaky roof problems during the showers, there didn't seem to be any disasters like last year's sewage fiasco. I really enjoyed the weekend from Contest University through Saturday. The flea market was really fizzling out by 4 PM on Saturday,
so I did not return on Sunday, which is usually a nothing out on the blacktop anyway.
There seemed to be more new products demonstrated compared to last year. When some will ship is anyone's guess. Will be back next year health willing.

It has to be bringing in some pretty good dollars to an otherwise struggling area. Considering 25,000+ attend Hamvention (and that doesn't include spouses who might come along and shop) ... if each attendee drops - on average - $300 in purchases (excluding admission and equipment purchased at at the show) in the Dayton metro area, that's $7.5 million - not counting what spouses/families might spend and anything the exhibitors spend in various fees, supplies, temporary help, etc. purchased in the area. It also doesn't count the various unofficial activities (e.g. FDIM, Contest University, suites, etc.) in the various hotels I'd be willing to bet total economic impact is well north of $10 million - or somewhere around $20 per resident in Greater Dayton. 73, ...
