[Elecraft_K3] Audio distortion on K3?

Could be aggressive NR if that's on. No other ideas at present. Look for clues on display. 73 Mike R Jimmy & Jimmy we will miss you. Thanks for the music. Rest in peace. Just to update this issue.
1. I have been lent the K3 by GU4CHY (my brother) for a few weeks. I made the original post using his groups account but have subsequently joined the group myself. 2. I have uploaded a file (in the files section) called K3 Audio distortion - very low level I'm afraid. For what it's worth the distortion is also there on CW sidetone. Mike R - NB not on and turning it on & off names no difference. But thanks for the reply. I'm waiting for a null modem cable to arrive so I can try the latest software. 73 Mike GU4EON |

I’ve come into this discussion a bit late, so excuse me if you’ve had these suggestions before:-
Is your power supply absolutely beyond reproach ? Can you try the rig on a battery ?
And have you disconnected everything from the rig apart from the DC lead ? If that happens to clear the hum plug ancillaries in one by one testing as you go.

Why a "NULL" Modem? ...nr4c. bill On Nov 22, 2014, at 9:02 AM, "gu4eon@... [Elecraft_K3]" <Elecraft_K3@...> wrote:

Hi John,
It's not a hum it's an audio distortion on peaks - recording in files section. I don't have a battery, only peripherals connected are paddle and antenna. I have a kenwood PS-30 (non-switch mode) which is okay on other rigs. The other PSU is switch mode but was alright with the K3 before I borrowed both. I need to borrow a scope to start following waveforms etc. 73 Mike |

Bill,
I'd normally make my own but am without 9pin male connectors for the K3 end. So it's not a true null modem cable as the there's opposite genders at each end. I don't have a USB to RS232 adaptor either. 73 Mike |

Yes. The cable is straight thru, no crossed wires. You really don't want the "NULL" modem cable. A cable with same connector on both ends is a Gender Changer. ...nr4c. bill On Nov 22, 2014, at 6:10 PM, "gu4eon@... [Elecraft_K3]" <Elecraft_K3@...> wrote:

I tried to go to the link you provided in your post but I got an error message. Just for interest's sake, when you hear this distortion is your NB on? is the little NB LED flashing? if any of this is true the NB is set too high. Then again none of this may be the case. Just trying to help. 73 todd WB2ZAB |

In the CONFIG menu, is the AF GAIN set to HI or LO?

Hi Todd,
The file can found in the files section on Yahoo groups - FYI Thanks for your suggestion NB on or off doesn't make any difference. 73 Mike |

Hi Bob,
It was set to HI but in either setting the distortion is still present. I'd like to take the opportunity to say how impressed I am with the level of response I'm getting on this group. Once a solution's found I will post it here. 73 Mike GU4EON |

Do you have the distortion with speaker and headphones, one or the other? I believe there are two separate amps for speaker and headphone. If you have the distortion in both then it would eliminate the audio amps, seems to me anyway.

I believe there are two separate amps for speaker and headphone.Yes, there are separate amplifiers for speaker and headphones. Make sure you are running a solid 13.8V to the rig and have no high resistance connections in the power system. Also, if you have an early serial number unit, make sure it has been updated to install the lower resistance RF chokes in the audio amp supply lines. 73, ... I usually run my K3 speaker out through an MFJ-784B Digital Filter, and can easily get that distortion by turning the AF gain too high and over driving the the digital filter input, which is set to a medium level.

I believe he said 9 o'clock. I start to get distortion above 10 or 11 o'clock at times. When that happens its usually louder than I need it so I turn it down. It may be dependent on the received voice. Auto notch and agressive NB have been issues. I think auto notch was improved in firmware. It wasn't a problem for me. 73 Mike R Jimmy & Jimmy we will miss you. Thanks for the music. Rest in peace. Little Jimmy Dickens and The singing Cajun Jimmy C. Newman. Hi,
The AutoNotch on the K3 is too effective! It’s learning rate is too rapid, and that causes it to lock on and off of rapidly varying voice peaks during SSB phone reception. The effect sounds much like someone overdriving their mic input at the transmitter. Last night I was listening in headphone diversity mode, with my K3 on the left and an IC-7700 on the right, to some SSB comms. The left ear (K3) sounded crackly and distorting, like the op was overdriving his transmitter, but the right ear (IC-7700) sounded just fine. I removed diversity by listening only to one receiver or the other. The IC-7700 continued to sound okay, but the K3 was gritty and abrasive, and I could not tolerate listening for any long duration. So I started tracking things down…. I normally listen to the SSB subbands with the auto notch enabled to avoid all the tuner uppers, and with the NB enabled at a very low setting just to get rid of incidental impulses. After disabling the NB no change occurred. I then examined both the K3 and the IC-7700 audio output on an audio spectrum analyzer. There were no obvious indications of IMD in either of them. So perhaps I need to feed 2 tones? I did so, and still no IMD. I tried lowering the Line Output setting, fearing that I might have it too high and I was inducing harmonic distortion, but the spectrum analyzer showed nothing down to -60 dBc. Just by chance, I removed the AutoNotch while listening to some more SSB phone, and immediately noticed that the speaker’s voice quality dramatically improved. Aha! The AutoNotch is too quickly adapting to varying voice peaks, and the sudden disappearance / appearance of nearby treble peaks in the voice was causing a crackling sound in my headphone. I notice that on heterodyne tones the K3 almost instantly removes them, while the IC-7700 takes a fraction of a second longer, perhaps 100-200 ms. But that sluggish behavior in the IC-7700 is not objectionable, and apparently is long enough to avoid it training quickly on voice peaks. 73 de Dave, N7AIG |
