Jim, I have ordered full K4 and by the time I get will be 75.  I am being optimistic given I caregive nearly 24/7 and toll it is slowly taking .   I wish I could speed up delivery.   Or FT.

I will be 85 in two months - too old to be buying new radio.  Bucket list is empty.  I have been blessed with many fine radios - IC7851, K3s/KPA1500..  Only K3s/P3/KPA1500 left. No more upgrades.

Softrock V6.2 with K3 IF crystal for panadapter

KD8CGH

I built this years ago with the plan of making a panadapter for my K3. Instead I got an LP-PAN. A web search will turn up plans and info like:
https://gm0elp.blogspot.com/2008/08/k3-panadapter-softrock-v62-lite.html
use wayback to pull up Clifton Labs links
http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Using-the-V6-2-lite-Softrock-Rx-as-a-panadaptor-with-Elecraft-K3-td468873.html
To do this also requires a Clifton Labs Z10000 buffer amp which DX Engineering still sells.

I'm never going to use this, so it is available for the cost of shipping ($5?). Contact me by message or email (mycall at arrl.net).

New KX1

Darryl J Kelly

I wish Elecraft would reintroduce a radio like the KX1. I see several companies producing radios that are very competent and desirable for QRP and SOTA in the $500 =/- price range. I would like a KX2 or KX3 but don't want to spend $1K or more. I bought a hard to find KX1, very competent radio but somewhat dated. I would like to see a new version of the KX1, not needing all the features of the KX2 or KX3, but in the same form factor and in the $500 price range. Elecraft did it right once, why not try again?

Jim,

I'm about in the same boat except I have the KPA500/K3s/K3.  They are easy to handle, move around etc.  I sold my Icom 756 P3 and swore not to own another rig that I can't tuck under my arm and walk around with it.  As you know, the 7800 was a big heavy rig and beyond my lifting capability.

I just turned 77 last Dec...one of our MARS guys just had his 99th birthday this week, he's still active and types on the computer, you would never guess he is 99 years old.  A  B24 pilot in WW2 and ran phone patches for us in Vietnam along with his wife.  He's quite a fellow and an inspiration to the rest of us.

I hope you are doing ok and the family is good.  We still have a bunch of snow on the ground.  I'm looking forward to spring and get back on the bicycle.

Email me with some pictures if you can.  My shack is small and messy with three computers and a big monitor for the P3 so it's hard to get a full pictujre of it all.  I need to do some tower maintance this summer too.

So to stay within the goup guidlines, I will mention my K3s and KPA500 are chugging along, with it on about 18 hrs per day every day.  My K3 is backup and on the shelve ready to go incase I need it.  BTW I upgraded the power supplies, I now use the Power werks SS30DV, two of them, amazing little supplys, run cool as can be and no RF noise that I have detected on any band.

Take care Jim

P.S.  Getting a little interested in DX again, was checking on the VP8 down in the Indian ocean but no prop...Oh well...

In Mike's statement below, "maximum" should be "continuously".

How much demand is there for a new K2 kit?  Of course they could be selling like hot cakes!  I have no idea.

Will we get to see a K4 before the Dayton/Xenia weekend?  It would be nice to be able to talk about it at Contest University on Thursday May 14th.

Elecraft could release source code under an open source license!  It may actually be an advantage in the long run.   Imagine having the potential of keeping code current for the discontinued hw.

Since the K3 was introduced, no update to K2 was made, with the exception of replacing some unobtanium DIL devices with their SMD counterparts. Certainly, no software update was made to the K2.

I worry about fixing bugs to K3(S) and P3. Several bug reports are years old and there is no sign of them getting fixed. Will there be new firmware for K3 (latest: jan 2019), or the P3 (latest: march 2016)

As to K2, Elecraft recently silently discontinued the XV60 option module, because of "parts unavailability". I checked the parts on the XV60 and can't find what part is obsolete - certainly the PIC processors are still in production. Stopping the XV60 makes the unit much less usable for VHF/UHF, and I see this as a first sign of  obsolescence of the K2.

I do understand creating something like the K4 requires significant engineering resources. But I hope Elecraft will decide to, for instance, release the source code for obsoleted products, so that we can do some of the maintenance ourselves. Things like the HW-8 have been around for decades and people are still keeping them alive; for Elecraft gear, this is more complex w/o access to the code. And is an obsoleted product, based on older technology, really going to compete with the Elecraft flagship products?

Hey John,

I am not sure who your question was directed to, but if it was to me I sold the K3S some time ago, however, I had 3 of them and have deceived to sell one of the two I have left, as I have a K4 on order. If interested you can contact me at everettsharp@....

Hey Bob, did you find your KPA3 amp? I think I have one. Meaning, I just purchased a k3/100 but need the amp out to use it on a remote where the power can't accidentally be tuned up.
