While listening on one band with the K3 and transmitting on another band with my second radio I suspect that there may have been a condition where there was excessive RF coming into the receive antenna port of the K3 which caused a hole to be burned through D5.

The KXVA3 board is the transverter board which also houses the recieve only antenna jack.

Additional bandpass filtering has been added external to the receive antenna connector to hopefully prevent this from recurring.

This could be anything, but sounds like an almost broken capacitor.

 

You need to find out where in the receiver the noise is generated.

A good place to start is the IF output connector.

 

Connect a second receiver to the IF port and see if the noise is still present when tuned to approx. 8.2 MHz

In case not, it is generated in the IF, DSP chain

If yes, most probably it is the front-end.

 

This will lead to the next, more detailed steps. 

 

You should also check the syntheser output on a spectrum analyser to see if the oscillator is "clean" or listen to it on a second rx. 

Best to see if you can use a TMP connector somewhere to tap into the signal.

I have a K3 that has worked great for many years but now has a noise source somewhere in the receiver. The radio still hears stations but there is a new source of static bursts on all bands. It sounds like there is a thunderstorm in the local area with bursts on 160M peaking at S-9 +40 and on 10M they peak around S-6. When I disconnect the antenna, stations go away but the static noise remains. I have a video that I can send a video of what I am trying to describe.

I have taken the radio apart and reseated all of the connectors (some are gold and some are tin) and the problem persists.

I do not have a sub receiver installed.

I am looking for suggestions on what to try next.

Transverter QO-100 on K3

Hi OMs,

I am absolutely new to QO-100 and just making my first steps on it. 
For that I bought an up converter and is connected to Ant2 driven by 1W. 
So far so good, works well with 10m band.

But how can I establish an appropriate display of the working frequency?
Thought that 489.5 would be great on display representing 10.489500 GHz start of QO-100 band. 
Doesn't work.
Then I thought maybe 2400 is OK, representing 2400MHz the uplink frequency. 
Doesn't work.

What am I doing wrong? Is this not possible?

Hi, bear with me, newby question. Setting up my K3 for driving external transverters with the KXV-3 all seems to be working OK, have the VHF bands all programmed in from 1 to 4 however when I go back to use the rig on HF I have no power out. What do I need to turn off to get full power back on HF?, I’m sure it’s simple and I have RTFM 😑

Mine popped the pills because the board that provides the protection failed, according to Elecraft repair. There were no adverse operating conditions: turned it on, first dit, kapow. Drive was something like 18w. Coax, switch, antenna were all ok.

Well I did the transmit gain as well first and maybe that fixed it and not the next step I took.  I should have done the TX Gain first at the location in the house but I swapped the rigs first to eliminate the amp.  OH well it seems to be working now and I know that someone else had the same issue.  Maybe it was TRICK or TREAT..  LOL

I had the same problem a while ago with my KPA1500, it would max out and trip out even when the K3 said I was only running 25 watts. My SWR is 1.4:1 on 160, so that shouldn’t be an issue. I pulled my hair out trying to figure out why. I finally decided to do a TXgain calibration. That corrected the problem and I haven’t had an issue since.

My question is why did the TXgain change. It has been working fine for many years.

Well my K3S (10853) started tripping my KPA1500 on transmit with little or no power on 6 Meters.  You could see when I would key down that the SWR meter on the 1500 would go to max then drop off even with the amp in standby.  I replaced it with (10858) my Man Cave rig and it worked OK,  I realized that my second rig had the ATN6 in menu TXGN HP and wasn’t an issue.  So I followed the instructions on Elecraft’s Web Page and did the same thing to 10853 and it now appears to not trip the amp and I’m not seeing the SWR meter on the 1500 going HI then LOW.

 

My question is The reading on 10858 in TXGN HP reads ATN6 31 and using the same criteria and dummy load, 10853 reads at TXGN HP, ATN6 96.  I wonder if I still have the problem 10853 and with the added pad just reduced the issue to where it works or seems to on 6.

 

I sent in a ticket to Elecraft over the weekend but haven’t had a response yet.  Not a big deal but thought some Guru out there might have run into the same issue.  I’m just wondering if I still have a problem or not.
