Re: K4 vs Flex

Bill Maddock

I still love my 2 K3 radios and have no intention on selling them anytime soon. I have all the upgrades, so I’m pretty well set. I looked at the K4 , but I also looked at the Flex. I purchased a 6600 without the Maestro. I also use a 43 inch 4K monitor with it. It’s very easy to use and I have no regrets. Being able to cut the RF gain on 160 and 80 makes it easier to tolerate and doesn’t impact S meter reading. Looking forward to 160 and 10 meter contests this year.

If I had to do it again, Flex all the way.   I love my K3S.  It's awesome, it's portable.  I use it for FD and WFD, and use it with external transverters, etc.  I really love it.  I bet I would've really loved that Flex more!

Mine are the original RS-232 interface not the USB with built in sound card. I guess I'll be looking for another set of boards if I can't find a source for the serial I/O chip. I didn't realize that chip was so sensitive.

Hi again,

Thank you! I set Ardop, and all is working again... I will move to VARA later on, as it shows the no PTT issue, but ARDOP does not... I now have my way to send an Internet message should I need to in an Emergency...

You mentioned a Red Cross drill... Our club is associated with the Red Cross, but we have not heard of this drill... Do you have a link for it?

Again, thank you!

Re: K3S parts availability???

Dave (NK7Z)

If you want to preserve your rubber buttons, use an external keypad...
See:

https://www.nk7z.net/adding-external-keypad-k3/

for my solution to this...

I now have 64 keys that will launch any macro programmed into the P3/SVGA... My favorite is the CW DX macro... I SPOT a CW station, (using the keypad), then hit the "SPLIT + 5" button, and the macro moves the CW station to the left side of the P3, sets the bandwidth for the P3 to 6 KHz., and finally makes VFO-B the transmit frequency control, while showing the 6 KHz. above the DX station on the P3... Takes about half a second to run, and all with a single button press...

I almost never touch the front of the radio anymore... If I have some action I do a lot, I just program a macro for it, assign it to a key on the keypad and I never touch the radio again for that function...

K3 is very good quality product made from good quality parts. No issue in the first 10 years. Only the display is a special item but it is used KX3 and KX2 also, just do not drop it. Farnell, Mouser is your friend. Anyhow I think it is better than the competition. The rubber buttons will wear out earlier or later that might be a concern only. I bought 6 years ago a gently used K3 and made an upgrade with sync board and some additional parts.
I am very satisfied with the TRX.
One of my purchase decision was, I believed Elecraft would store spare parts longer than the well known competitors. on the other hand I prefer simple displays, not theese SDR one.

Several years ago I owned a Kenwood 950 SDX , with was discontinued 6-7 years and when I asked my dealer, if spare parts would be available, he denied some essential parts.
So I sold it quickly , even there where no issues.

So I would asked the experienced here, are there essential issues in the last years as some other brands have had.
I know only some issues with the 4 knobs and broken caps.
I will keep mine as long as I can, today I see no alternative to a K3 according to size, weight and performance.
I believe Elecraft has a good reputation, and they dont gamble away :-)

Re: K3 K3S Parts

One alternative, for the truly devoted to any one radio, is to purchase a second radio of the same model. This becomes increasing reasonable as the generations of newer radios appear. Initially it can be a fully functioning radio, allowing a swap-out and more leasurely repair of the first radio. Later, one of the radios can become a "parts" radio. I have done this successfully with Omni6+'s for many years. I am slowly transitioning to K3's at this point and looking forward to more K3's becoming available.

Re: K3 K3S Parts

Accepted, but look at the technology of the parts you are talking about - low electronic technology.

I think any car or motorcycle from 1980s onwards could be a big problem - anything that's got data parameters, calibrations etc would be difficult to replicate, if you can't get the IC 's... I suspect many a radio would be difficult to fix, without someone back engineering a solution.

As I said before,  not just an Elecraft problem

Re: K4 vs Flex

It depends on your priorities.

Disclaimer: I prepaid a K4D in full, eventually got a refund when it felt I wasn't getting either honesty or delivery. Have been largely off the air while I try to make a similar decision, other than a little ft8 on my kx3 (of which I am still fond)

Pros for the K4:
It is nice. I was impressed by the limited time I had with a prototype.
I have full faith, even now, that Wayne's engineering will someday deliver an excellently performing unit.
Elecraft as a vendor is all about the ham
Superior for CW

Pros for Flex:
You will have it a year sooner
Pricing likely a bit cheaper
Larger outfit supporting it
Confidence it will ship

Tossup:
Mac support for SDR - right now, this probably goes to Flex via 3rd party software

If you are a Windows-using CW operator who is in utterly no rush, K4 seems promising.

If you are strictly SSB, and want something to plug into your Mac this December, Flex is your only option.

Good luck finding what fits your needs best.

I’ll be ordering one as soon as the “kit” price is announced since I’m really cheap.

Bi;ll,

I retired in 1989 after 22+ years in the Air Force and NEVER cursed in the work place. – simply unprofessional, insulting and demeaning. Simpy demonstrates a lack of control and knowledge of the English language.. Well, perhaps a damn or hell but never beyond that.

After I retired, my guess is that profanity in the military work place is grounds for some kinda disciplanary action under the UCMJ. Enough said.

I retired from the USAF 1 Sep 99.  Yes, I heard a lot of four-letter words during that time and even used some on rare occasions when my temper got the best of me, but never, not once, used one in written correspondence.  Writing when angry is best followed by putting the prose aside for a while and reviewing it at least once.  Another technique is to burn it, rather than send it.

I attended the NCO (non-commissioned officer) Academy at Lackland AFB TX.  In one seminar we had a guest speaker whose name I can't recall.  He was a professional of some sort, again I can't recall.  I'll never forget what he said about using profanity in the workplace:  "It's not professional."  While this is not a workplace, it is a community with a broad spectrum (pun intended) of readers.  Jim has it right.  Using profanity debases the user and the reader/listener.  I would add that it makes the user appear to lack vocabulary sufficient to expresses himself/herself.

Coincidentally, just before this digest arrived, my wife and I were discussing this subject ((decaying society) as it relates to politics, of all things.  I'm thankful this coarse behavior appears infrequently in digests like this and wish it were much less on-the-air.  I have a friend who won't operate 75m because of what he has heard there over the years even though it would provide a better HF path between us than 40m.

Good luck in the contest to all!  I know it's a contest weekend because my back is killing me and we have thunderstorms predicted!

Oh yes... All other software using the PTT and mic are working fine... Just Winlink fails to PTT.

Make sure windows is allowing Winlink modem app to use the microphone.
Settings/System/Sound/"Related Settings" Microphone Privacy Settings:
Allow Apps to access your microphone: ON
Allow desktop apps to access your microphone: VARA HF MODEM, whatever else you use

Hi,
Is anyone using Winlink, (latest), with Windows 10, (latest), and a K3?
All used to work, and all of a sudden PTT fails. All else works, the
radio is driven to the best frequency, etc... I have made no known
changes. There was a windows update... I would like to verify it still
works, and if so, to get some settings from you...
