Tom this is insanity. Why aren't you using a 1:12 balun? Then tuner and feed line will be happy. At 1:1 you are creating very expensive heat!

Subject: [Elecraft_K3] KPA1500 power out into 8:1 VSWR load

Hello,

At our club station, we have a 265 foot ladder line fed doublet with a 1:1 BALUN just outside the station. On 80, it presents a 7:1 VSWR (which the K3 tuner handles OK).

If anyone lucky enough to have their KPA1500 yet has a similar setup, I would be curious about how it matches a similar VSWR (8:1 on 160m).

We use the same antenna on 80m and 160m (similar VSWR on both).

I’m curious how much the tuner downgrades the power (and how that process happens) as this is a remote setup when we are not contesting.

Of course, I can answer this when my amp gets here, but knowing makes the waiting go by that much faster :)

Lyle -- good evening

It was the tone deviation that was too great for our local repeater.

Cranked it down a bit and now all works well.

Thanks for your help -- and for the others who chipped in with advice.

All now sorted

Yet it was a thought already had. :)

The original BALUN was worse. We switched to a 1:1 (or 4:1—I cannot remember which way we went).

The antenna works fine and tunes easily even with the radio tuner. It's almost all ladder line so I'm not too worried about the VSWR or line loss.

My point rather than to analyze what should be done is to see if anyone with a KPA1500 had a similar situation. From the few replies, I presume we are somewhat unique. I will certainly report what I find when he amp gets here (hopefully soon).

Wouldn't it make sense to change out the balun with something that provides a better match? Just a thought.

PLTONE works for me.

Hold PITCH again to turn it off.

In the US, it's often referred to as a "PL tone" (IIRC, that
originated as a Motorola term, for "Private Line"). When in FM mode,
hold PITCH, then turn the VFO B knob until it says "PL TONE" (and a
"T" appears next to "FM"). I haven't actually tried this, but I
believe that's what you need to do.

Lyle.
Many thanks for explaining how it works.
I didn't know -- and couldn't find how the 'duration' of the tone was determined.

If it runs for as long as you TX then that should work.
I now need to find out why its not opening our local Repeater.
Deviation could well be the issue.

I'll let the group know when I'm successful.

As an aside I must say I'm absolutely delighted with the Transverter support offered by the K3 and K3s (I have both)

Bruce, the commands you mention to set the tone are to specify the pitch and enable the tone.

The tone is then sent with every transmission, for the duration of each transmission, until you disable it.

Did this not work when you tried to access the repeater?

There is a separate adjustment for the CTCSS tone deviation in case it needs to be altered.

Thanks for the response.
Yes I understand how to generate the tone -- exactly as you say, but how does on keep the tone running for the duration of the Transmission -- without keeping your finger on the button?

Repeaters over here need this low frequency tone (77Hz in my case) to run for as long as you want the Repeater to remain open.
If you drop the tone, the Repeater drops out.

So my question is not about how to generate the tone but how to maintain it for the duration of your transmission -- without the impractical route of having to keep the front panel button pushed?
I'm not sure which front-panel button you're holding? I would expect
the "PL tone" to be generated while you're transmitting, so long as
you see the "T" next to "FM". I don't have a way to test it, though.

I would like to buy the older version of the KIO3 (RS-232 version).  I know many of you have upgraded to the "B" version.  Of course in perfect working order and hopefully from a later serial number.  It will ship to my US QTH.

Please let me know off reflector.

K3 audio drops out twice, momentarily, following ssb transmission

Andy Elliott

Following an SSB transmission, the audio on my K3 drops out twice in rapid succession, about one second after the end of the transmission. It then works normally.  Any ideas about what could cause this?  It happens on all bands, and only on SSB. The two drop outs are very short, much less than one second in duration.

Tom,

I can't answer your question; but, if the tuner in the KPA1500 is not capable of handling that high of an SWR on 160,  may I suggest the X Match (see attached QST review). The loss on 160 with a 8:1 SWR is 17% (compare that with the MFJ 989 at 58%).    Anyway, I have had one for years, and I think it is more than adequate for the job.
