Re: [Elecraft_K3] Remote On/Off Switch

Thanks for all the reply's guys.  I will begin working on this project next week.  I already have shack lights and shack main DC power supply connected to my home automation system.  Both can be controlled through automation scripts or Alexa voice commands.  Alexa, turn on\off the shack lights.  Alexa, turn on\off the shack power supply.  Of course this can also be remotely controlled via the internet.  Next will be the K3 power.

I am using Home Assistant for my home automation hub.  I use Sonoff wifi switches for most of the switching.  The Sonoff switches are very inexpensive and can do a wide range of tasks once flashed with open source firmware by Tasmota.

Fun stuff !

In case anyone is interested, this USB device is available via Amazon and eBay and there are cross-platform open source software libraries for controlling it.  It has two relays in case there is any need for controlling any other devices. It would take a bit more work to connect it to standard home automation gear. I'm mentioning it in case anyone has the simple need that I had which is to be able to power the K3 back on remotely if I happen to accidentally turn it off.

This is for a home automation project that will control devices in my shack such as power supplies, rigs, lights, antennas, etc.  Like turning the K3 on and off at certain times of day.  It will also have Amazon Alexa voice control. I will not have any remote controlled hardware devices (remote rig) talking to the K3 for power on and off.  I want to use a simple WIFI controlled switch (Sonoff Basic) connected to K3 power button.  It will simply mimic what the K3 power button is doing.  I already know about ACC pin 8 but that is only for turning the K3 on.

According to the schematic, I think the power button on the K3 is a simple momentary push button switch ?

Re: [Elecraft_K3] Remote On/Off Switch

Rick NK7I

On this general subject, I have requested from Elecraft (in private emails) that the K3 timer function, useful for turning the K3 on at a given time, be made 'sticky' not just a one time only event.

This change would allow K3 power up at a selected time, daily, with the presumption that the K3 was turned off (remotely after use or by power failure).  For those of us that operate remotely, it's a small thing but HUGE for simplifying operations.

So far, it hasn't happened.  I understand other things have priority, like fixing bugs or making upgrades in features; new products...

So I use a USB relay card and the software allows a rapid (time amount I set) on/off to fake momentary contact for ACC pin 8 (don't keep it low, more so with an KPAx500 amp) and it's on the computer that controls the entire station.  That works (and I put it into a box with another card that allows me to have real FSK and CW via the ACC line since I'm already there; the box has a USB port, a serial port and a plug for the K3 connections; it also works FSK/CW on my IC-7300).

Perhaps in time, that simple (to a non-programmer) change to the timer can be made.  Simple rocks, every time.  If others are interested in this change, here is your chance to speak up.

See page 44 of the D10 manual.

Pin 8 on the ACC connector of the K3 can momentarily be pulled to ground to power up the K3 (not sure what the absolute limits are) but the one I have seems to work reliably enough. So no need to extend the power button out back. Switching it off requires a PS0; command but I'm guessing you will have some sort of computing device connected so that's not really a problem. Win4K3 has it built in. Not sure why they didn't make the ACC pin a toggle.

Hi Bill,

We ship the RF deck and Power Supply in two individual inner boxes that are then packed with special foam corner inserts into a larger outside shipping box. The foam inserts, air gap and the outer box provide the extra protection needed for shipping via UPS etc. We lose that protection if we ship it using just the two inner boxes on their own.

The easiest thing I would suggest is to simply open the top of the outer box upon receipt and then easily remove the lighter two inner boxes separately to move it. They lift out very easily.

I have not had much luck using a1:1 choke on my open wire feed into a T-match tuner.  The 1:1 is terrible to try to get a good match.  I suppose changing the feedline length or antenna length might make it better, but I am not going to do that again.  The 1:4 gives the tuner a easy match.  Sorry about the 1:1 but it’s not always the best solution IMOH.

Hello,

At our club station, we have a 265 foot ladder line fed doublet with a 1:1 BALUN just outside the station. On 80, it presents a 7:1 VSWR (which the K3 tuner handles OK).

If anyone lucky enough to have their KPA1500 yet has a similar setup, I would be curious about how it matches a similar VSWR (8:1 on 160m).

We use the same antenna on 80m and 160m (similar VSWR on both).

I’m curious how much the tuner downgrades the power (and how that process happens) as this is a remote setup when we are not contesting.

Of course, I can answer this when my amp gets here, but knowing makes the waiting go by that much faster :)

Re: [Elecraft_K3] Fetching the K3 configuration parameters?

Jim N7US

I uploaded an Excel file in 2013 that was a copy and paste of the PDF manual.  I haven’t updated it since then for firmware updates so it’s of limited usefulness.

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Elecraft_K3/files

VA2FSQ’s Win4K3Suite can do it, as could N2BC’s K3_EZ program.  The latter program hadn’t been updated either, and now the developer is a SK.

I printed that section of the manual and have pencil notations for my settings.
