NG7M's FSK RTTY Tutorial & Setup for Elecraft K3/K3S N1MM+ / 4K YouTube Video

Max NG7M

Hi Everyone, I finally got around to creating a Tutorial Video that goes through the details of setting up N1MM+ with MMTTY for FSK.  Over the years I have spent a lot of time helping other local guys setup FSK with their Elecraft K3/S setups.  It becomes a rhetorical conversation it seems from one RTTY operating event / contest.  Inevitably guys will call and want help to set things up after they have made local changes etc...  there seems to be a disconnect on how you use serial lines for PTT and FSK keying from MMTTY or other RTTY software apps.

The following video I created is very verbose and may not be for everyone.  I focus on setting up FSK with MMTTY along with the PTT/FSK keying interface with the K3/S.  I then go into the basic configuration in N1MM+.  And yes, it goes into painful detail at times, and I even expose and correct my own mistakes along the way (SO2V for example).  The video is 1 hour and 55 minutes in length... No longer will I need to send hours helping guys re-setup their MMTTY config and N1MM+ (well hopefully!).  I can send them the video for reference.

I hope others may find this useful and can share it with others that struggle with setting up their K3/S for FSK / MMTTY and N1MM+.  Just skip around to sections you are interested etc... (speed up or slow down the video in YouTube) I made the video during the BARTG RTTY contest so I would be able to easily do some life contacts.  I think it is good / verbose overview of an FSK setup starting point.  If you understand all of the concepts in the video, then you can take things to another level.

K3 Strange power reporting

Stewart G3RXQ

I have a program written in VB which amongst other things shows what power my K3 is set to.

All working fine until yesterday when it reported 5W as 50W and 10W as 100W. Power settings for 15W, 20W, 30W & 45W were reported correctly.

Initially I suspected a bug in my program, but on checking the data sent from my K3 using the uHam MK11 logging window I found that my K3 was sending PC050 for 5W and PC100 for 10W...

Switching the K3 off for the standard 20 seconds, and then retrying cleared the problem - very strange !

At least I now know what to do if it happens again.

Re: K3/0-mini sidetone

Mitch Wolfson

Ron,

Is the side tone coming from the K3/0, or the RRC?

The default is too loud on the RRC. To change it, go into the RRC keyer settings and change side tone to a lower number. I use 20db.

Mitch

 Hi Ralph,

I couldn't agree with you more on your views of Yahoo's demise starting, indeed, with the ill fated "neo" format. But I think you are wrong about the serial numbers. I am the happy owner of serial #82, which I have upgraded as far as I can towards a K3S. I am not the original owner of #82; a gentleman built it as a kit and then sold it after a month or two of use, which I understand is his habit (he loves building kits).

It's absolutely impressive how smooth this transition has been. This "new" group is teaming with activity and I have not seen a single post on Yahoo since its inception. Is there anything you can do stop the feuding on the KX3 group and make them move on? Are you going to close the Yahoo group soon?

'I see the KX3 group owner, Howard, now has a new post on the K3 Yahoo group where he explains his reasons for not making the move. Fair enough, but I hope his backups of the group's resources are good.

I also programmed our club K3 for PF1 and PF2 for the two mics (desk, Heil headset) and use separate settings and it also switches to the proper connection port when selected.  So, one button switching between mics and settings (even says on the screen which mic now selected).

I am looking forward to the arrival of my KPA1500, an upgrade to my KPA500.  As I wait, I'm looking at ways to attach my 3 antennas to my 2 antenna port KPA1500.  Of course, I can place a manual antenna switch between the amp and one of my existing antennas.  Is there a more elegant way to create a 3rd antenna port that band switches with my K3S?
