Re: Erratic behavior of my K3

Andreas Wachter

Ah, that confirms my suspicion. How did you solve your problem? Did you find the right RS232 to USB converter cable? Did you replace the serial interface module in the K3 with the new KIO3B? I am reluctant to do this because the KIOB3 is $399 plus tax. Not sure it makes sense to spend any money on my 10 year old K3 assuming that if and when other parts fail, I won't be able to get replacements from Elecraft.

BTW, I also tried RS232 to RS232 i.e. without converting to USB. That turned out to be actually the worst. I have tried three different RS232 to USB converter cable. There are subtle differences I believe but basically none worked flawlessly. Unfortunately I can't simply disconnect the serial port since I need it for my panadapter and logging software.

Lastly: when you say "sorting out trash on the RS232 port on the K3, the processor gets bogged down". What trash are you talking about? Noise on the RS232 port? Also, which processor? The main K3 processor or a processor on the KIO3 board?

Best, Andreas-K6AKW

Re: Erratic behavior of my K3

Yes indeed…it took me several years to discover that the RS232 port was the issue…or the RS232 to USB converter was the issue.  With Elecraft support and the PC logging vendor, MacLoggerDX their support is amazing..it was narrowed down finally…this is on K3 SN 0069.  The processor gets bogged down trying to sort out trash on the RS232 port on the K3.  Disconnect the RS232 port cable and it works as it should…Finding an adapter that is not prone to trash output is another subject.. IMHO.

With RIG control enabled from PC -> RIG (RIG control from RIG -> PC doesn't cause any issues), the erratic behavior tends to occur more often. In fact, toggling RIG control on and off, can pretty reliably reproduce the audio cut out issue. I've been in contact with Elecraft but have so far not received any solutions to my problem. Anybody else having these issues? I can still use the K3 i.e. it's not gotten to the point where I can't operate the rig anymore but I have to admit it is a bit annoying (that said, I take my erratic K3 over any other "functioning"rig anytime).

Looks like a standard 3-pin header, 0.025" square pins, 0.1" (2.54mm) spacing.

This cable could work:

Maybe Elecraft can send you one, but I can't find a part number.

I've gone through all the settings that appear to be correct, but can't see an issue. My hearing on my right side is better so I'd like to be able to select the right speaker (without re-wiring)
I'm assuming its 2 channel on the USB out from the K3S all be it digital, or is it to do with WIN4K3. I am also running DXLAB
What am I missing? Any help would be much appreciated.

Try this:
  1. Go to CONFIG:LIN OUT
  2. Tap [1] to toggle the setting from nor 010 to =Phones
Now, every stereo effect you can hear in the headphones (AFX, Diversity, SUB) is also presented as a stereo signal on K3 LINE OUT, and the line out level is now controlled by the front panel AF GAIN control instead of by the LINE OUT level in the K3 menu.

You might also find it helpful to change CONFIG:SUB AF from nor to bALANCE to make it easier to center the PC speaker audio to your hearing preference.  Of course check that CONFIG:L-MIX-R is set to the default: A b.

Stereo input also applies to the USB digital audio output of a K3S (or K3 with KIO3B board), but this USB sound card defaults to mono mode.  To change the K3 USB sound card to Stereo mode:
  1. Right click on the Speaker Icon in the Windows Notification Area (lower right corner of task bar, near the clock)
  2. Select Recording Devices
  3. Click to select the USB Audio CODEC for the K3 (you may have more than one of these)
  4. Click Properties
  5. (optional) On the General tab, above the Change Icon button, you can give the K3 USB Audio CODEC a new name like K3 USB AUDIO
  6. Select the Advanced tab
  7. Change the sample rate to 2 channel, 16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality)
  8. Click Apply
  9. Select the Listen tab
  10. Select Listen to this device
  11. Select your PC Sound Card as the playback device
  12. Click Apply
You can now monitor the K3's audio (both channels in full stereo) through your PC mixer, or in the headphone jack on your PC, and adjust volume and balance using the AF and SUB-AF knobs on the K3

Re: K3 config portable

Jim Douglass <ham@...>

Thank you to Joe, W4TV, and Jim, K5MWR, for their comments with regard to K3 configurations and the rig specific properties which burst my bubble somewhat. This on top of the K3 utility not being able to display the current k3 configuration.

I have come up with, at least  for me, a small work around.

I fire up my copy of Bill Coleman's, N2BC(SK), K3_EZ and call up the various tabs that show the current configuration on my
K3,s/n 5674. I then engage my windows Snipping Tool, save that page to my Dropbox account in a named folder and go on to do each of the other relevant pages. While Mr. Coleman's program was still in beta when his health gave out on him it is very good for my purposes. This way it is available on my smartphone or any internet connected pc where I can log on to my Dropbox account and view the configuration of my K3.

As our club, WKARC, Western Kansas ARC  has recently purchased a used K3 for our club station located 80 miles from my QTH I will now be able to  configure the new K3 the same way as mine at home. Not flashy but it saves a bunch of writing down things and perhaps (almost certainly ) miscopy one or more items.

If anyone has other suggestions please feel free to contact me on OR off the list. quoted text or not.

I think this is one of the features that WIN4K3 can provide, as I recall the only issue is that the configuration that WIN4K3 saves is mode dependent.

Of course you would need WIN4K3 when using the other K3.

Not on the Line Out output (KIO3 or KIO3B). Output is stereo (two
channel mono) on the Speaker/headphones - both channels are Main RX
if RX is Off or not installed and Left is Main/Right Sub if the Sub
RX is installed and turned on.

However, the LINE Out is always Main on Left/Sub on Right whether the
sub rx is installed or not. If no there is Sub RX installed or the
Sub RX is off, LINE OUT will have left channel only.

That said, and having just powered up the sub, If I select diversity and run both rf gains up (only 1 ant available) I get stereo sound. Not sure Its intended, but it works for me.

Is there a way to do this
No. The K3 Configuration files from the K3 Utility are radio
specific as they contain hardware calibration (factory) data
that would not be appropriate for another K3.

do I have to manually do it ?
Yes, you need to set up the second radio manually just as the
first radio was configured.

My PC streaming is all stereo or at least driving both channels apart
from the K3S which only drives the left channel.
In the K3/K3S, Line Out Left is the Main RX, Line Out Right is the Sub
RX. If the Sub RX is off or not installed, there will be no audio on
the right channel.
