I appreciate Elecrafts efforts.  We need to support the only (at least I believe) American radio manufacturer. Besides it is a terrific radio.  One thing that you might run in to is that Dxpeditions really don't need a pan adapter since they are the ones creating the pile up.  My friends take a K3 on the DXpedition and leave their P3 behind.

Anyway keep up the good work and thank your customer service for their outstanding attitude.

The K4 weighs only slightly more than the K3. And current drain is around 2 A, which is half that of most other radios in this class.

As for width, a K4 takes up a lot less room than a K3+P3 (13.5" vs. 17"). This is one of the reasons we designed the K4 -- easier to take one unit than two, and it saves desk real estate.

I would not call nearly ten years a short lifespan!  I just bought a K2 kit this year, 20 years after it was introduced.  And, Elecraft still supports it, unlike other brands with radios that old.  IMHO, I would not expect them to make firmware updates this late in its life cycle.  I bought the kit for the experience of building it.

After viewing the latest K4 updates at Pacificon, I am anxiously awaiting my K4 delivery!  I was among the first in line at the Elecraft booth at HamVention to buy one Friday morning.

Try to find another amateur radio manufacturer that updates firmware ten years later!  BTW, Flex was founded by and is mostly staffed with hams.  A good friend and fellow ham was their director of sales before passing on.

Of course Elecraft is a business and should do whatever they think is best for the long-term success of the company.

However, I think this cancelation will leave a bit of a hole in the product line between the KX3 and K4 because the K3S is still hard really hard to beat as a DxPedition radio in terms of performance in the harshest multi-station conditions and its portability. I fit my upgraded K3, KPA500, KAT500, power supply, cables and laptop (whole high-power station electronics) into 2 reasonably sized waterproof padded hard-cases that can get thrown in and out of a boat bobbing in the waves and dragged up rocky beaches.  And it’s certainly no slouch as a main shack radio. I don’t see the K4 as quite as good a fit for all these applications due to its size. But who knows what surprises Elecraft may have in store down the line.

Hi all,

I maintain the K3/K3S/KX3/KX2 firmware. Good news is that I'm still just a
kid on the Timeless Veteran Ham scale (my TVH ratio appears to have leveled
out at 0.73).

I put in about 4 miles a day striding up and down our local precipitous
hills, so I expect to be generating thousands of BTUs worth of C code a year
for the foreseeable future. (I can also vouch for Eric, who's the same age
as I am and enjoys frequent runs on the beaches of Aptos and Capitola.)

I'm still polishing up K4 firmware at the moment, but I will indeed be
continuing legacy product support as time permits.

On my 3rd K3 (love them so much keep buying more). Have tried all the new ones but keep coming back to the K3 as the best CW radio coupled with the P3 and KPA500. Ordered the K4 but no way I'm going to sell my K3. Just my 2 cents worth.

As I understood it talking to tech support a few years ago, Elecraft at that time has about 50 or 60 total employees... I believe all were hams. Thus long term support for all the past products have to have a drop dead date at some time. Hey the big guys have done it all the time. Many of the Icom, Yeasu, and Kenwood product all have end of life.  You can only have so much space in a warehouse for parts for old products.

As far as firmware goes, if they get enough requests for a new feature for the K3/K3S or have a bug found I am sure they will fix the bug and if possible assign someone to add a new feature.  But in the end you will have what you have and no more... If the radio needs repairing they will do it and do it right and fast, that has been my experience.  Unlike Icom, Yeasu, Kenwood and now Flex, Elecraft is a company that was started by hams, run by hams and their only market is ham radio.  Add to that these men and women actually use their own products...

Stop worrying.  The K3/K3S will be supported.  There is NO need to do anything else to the K2. If they had a few hundred requests I am sure they would, but that has not happened and I doubt it will. However keep in mind also the short life span of the K2 as being the flagship radio.  The K3 came out as not only a replacement but one that was intended to last for many years with many new features and improvement and bolt on's like the P3 and the KPA500/KAT500.  Technology has change a lot since the into of the K2 and even more so since the K3.  Time to move on and put limited resources into the next generation.  I suspect the K3/K3S prices will tank on the used market for a short period of time while people dump then and buy and K4.  Then I also suspect the price of the used K3/K3S will become stable and then go back up in price.  Why? Because of size, weight and performance...

My observation, take it or leave it...
