Flawless.  Menu the Mic button off, don't turn on the mic pre-amp (switch underneath) and set the level per usual.

As to the level out of the mike, nothing given on specs.  Plug it in, if it works and sounds good, the use it.  If it doesn't sound good, choose another mike.   I'm not a fan of cranking in a bunch of EQ to try and fix a poor sounding mike.   A good sounding mike should sound good with no EQ.

Re: Replacing K3 LPA devices.

Hi Mark,

Thank you SO much for posting this.  It's exactly what I think I need to do.

My K3S is about 2.5 years old but I did the unthinkable and didn't have them mounted properly.  They worked, but the higher in frequency I went the lower the power.  So bad that it would never complete the TX Calibration.  I noticed lately the power has been dropping and max power on 40 is now about 70 watts, But, after correcting the mounting it at least completes the TX Calibration now.  I'm thinking I still should change out those two transistors and just do it right.

Do you think I'm on the right track?

73 and thanks!

Measure the drive level to the transverter.   If drive falls off then so will 2M output as the transverter is linear.

Could be your antenna. Is the SWR higher at the top end of the band? The transverter may be folding back power a bit if the SWR is pushing 2:1 +/-. The ATU is bypassed (direct to antenna connection from the transverter), so the K144XV looks straight into whatever is at the antenna port.

You can also run calibration on the 28-30MHz drive power. And as the K144XV manual states "Many wattmeters have no more than 10-20% accuracy at 10W, so a reading of 7 to 10 watts is not unusual.”

The new K144XV (at 1.5mw drive), puts out 10 watts at 144Mhz (FM) and 7 watts at 147.9Mhz. Shouldn't it be more flat? I'm wondering if my K3S is causing part of this. It works well otherwise on other bands (including 10 meters). Firmware is current on the K3S and K144XV.

Subject: [Elecraft-K3] K144XV questions

I'm having what I think maybe issues with my transverter in my K3S.  I bought a used K114XV on the list here and it worked great but started getting unusually hot at very low power with very little talk time on FM or SSB.  It also would lose sensitivity as it got hot and the output power would fall off also.  A signal that started out 10 over S9 would be about an S3 after a few minutes.  The output power would fall off from 3 watts to where my Bird's needle barely moved.  Let it cool down for an hour and it would work fine again.  Same results for "full" power - start at 10 watts and drop below 1 watt in a few minutes.  The case of the k3s was almost too hot to touch.  I ran the fans on high, but no joy.  You didn't even have to use the transverter much - 10 seconds of talk time on FM and the results started to show.  Another issue is that depending on frequency, the power output was very different.  At 144Mhz (FM), the power would be 12 watts when cold.  At 147Mhz (FM), the power output was 8 watts - at 147.9Mhz, 6.5 watts (all with 1.0mw drive)

Spoke with Elecraft, they were willing to swap my apparently bad K144XV with a refurb for the cost shipping if I would do some more testing.  Also, the unit I had was an older design and they wanted it back.  I also bought the K144XV reflock board and 1PPM TXCO at the same time.  Once again Elecraft is awesome!!

I installed the newer K144XV from Elecraft and reflock etc.  The unit does not get hot like the old one which is great.  (I did try the reflock board in the older transverter for fun, but no change in behavior - just thought I'd try.) I can now talk on nets and general SSB ragchew and the K3S case is barely warm.  Yay! - maybe.

Mark, I don't think this it possible. The manual states that "most menu commands" can be assigned to F1...F8. Your macro consists of 2 commands, so you would need 2 buttons. In addition, RCF is only available as remote command.

Setting P3 Macro string into a P3 FN1 front panel Function Button. For WSJT-x FT8 and data modes. Help please.

Mark W2OR

After spending more than three hours of reading manuals and programmers reference material and research and phone calls, I give up, and have to ask our illustrious group :

Where on the web, or where in the P3 documentation are there clear, step-by-step instructions, or a clear example, on how to set/assign a P3 Macro string to a P3 FN front panel Function button, using P3 Utilities (latest Rev.1.16.3.15) ??

Example:  I have a favorite P3 macro I use for WSJT-x data modes, which I activate often, either by entering (and saving) the string into the P3 Utilities 'Edit Macros' tab, or likewise, entering the string into the P3 Utilities Command Tester.  Both methods work great.  Except for having to open/close P3 Utilities repeatedly, for each time I turn on the equipment, which is several times a week.  It'd be sooo much easier to have the macro string assigned to a P3 front panel button.  How is that done and where one can find instructions for that, are a mystery.  Thanks for the help !!  // Mark

FYI:  The macro string is: #RCF+001400;#SPN000030;   It provides wide screen view of the 3-kHz data mode bandwidth from the left edge of the P3 LCD screen.
