Yes, current draw is perfectly normal as is everything else about the radio. Only the PA temp reading has gone haywire. I’ve been in contact with Elecraft support and will be sending it in as soon as they send me an RSA. Thank you everyone for your thoughts on this.

Maybe a long forgotten setting in the menu: AF LIM

Is that setting OK?

Woah, that's a little overkill.    If the codec disappears while connected, the USB interface at one end of the cord or the other glitched up, hence my comment to disconnect and cycle power (more than just turn off).   If you can see both the in/out usb audio codec, then it's just going to be a setting somewhere, and there aren't many places to look.

Do you see both the in and out USB audio Codec?   You may need to adjust the volume sliders for each.  It might be a level setting on the radio as well.

I'm calling it OK for now....   ran FT8/FT4 yesterday at 80 to 100 watts.   K3 seems to be doing OK

Good news the rig's PA never gets to 55C so fan level 4 isn't kicking in.  ah, never saw 50C so fan speed level 3 never came on

Hi Keith,

great test

Yes, goes Full Speed when KPA3 set on FN4

on varying PA TEMP

Fan ON temperatures (Close):

37C – 1

42C – 2

50C – 3

55C – 4

so it is getting to fan speed four!

THANKS!!

Robert; Does it go full speed when set to FN4? If not, look at the 2 big flat resistors on the riser board just below the Fan connector pins. I have seen a poor solder joint there that prevented all of the speeds from working.
You don't have to cook your KPA3 to test, just set the config PA TEMP to a higher number and see if it goes to full speed.

Digital Dispaly Units for W2, KPA500 and coming next week KPA1500 DDU

Keith KV5J

Hello,

My new KPA1500 Digital Display Unit will be available next week after testing is complete and stock is built.
The KPA1500 DDU can be remotely located from the main amplifier up to the RS232 limits.
It will display the same screen as is shown on the display at the amplifier. This will allow viewing of the screen on the amplifier  while the KPA1500 is located away from the operating position.  The DDU is only 4x4x2 so it can be placed at your favorite viewing location.

More information will be available next week along with ordering.

You can be added to the list for notification of ordering by emailing DDUinfo@...

You can also order my other DDUs at http://www.kv5j.com

W2 Watt Meter DDU is in stock.

KPA500 Amplifier DDU is in stock.

I have found that plugging in a set of headphones in the front jack does seem to make the problem disappear, but the audio level is lower when using headphones. BTW, turning down the volume level has little impact on the distortion and I must admit that this appears to be intermittent or just needs the exact conditions.

Have you reviewed the current AGC settings? Seems that something may have changed. If in doubt, set them to the original default values shown in the manual.

Problem persists on Audio IN side of Codec. Audio out is OK.
In Windows 10 -> PC Settings -> Privacy -> Microphone make sure
that both "Allow apps to access your microphone" and "Allow
desktop apps to access your microphone" are *ON*.

Don't know if issue is within K3. Issue suddenly appeared yesterday
When did you last update Windows?

I’ve had it lately on my K3S.  I recently changed the AGC THR to 12, which I suspect is the problem, having previously used 8 and 10.  I’m going to go back to 8.

Wonder what your current draw is, right at startup?

If it’s normal, I would presume it’s the temperature sensor.

Hi David,

Thank you for your suggestion. I did that yesterday and when I put everything back together and turned it on the PA temp was still reading over 100C. I also made sure all the screws were tight on the KPA3, which they were, so I guess I am going to have to send it in for repair. I should also mention that the fans immediately go to their highest speed as they should with that high of s PA temp reading.

Nevermind - heart attack averted!

The secret was to use the direct RS232c cable and not try managing get firmware via the micro KEYER II’s serial router.

Just received an old K3 today.

It was at firmware level 5.62 so I decided to bring it up to current level (5.67).

The K3 is connected to my PC or Mac via a Microham microKEYER II’s RS-232c port.

It taking through the virtual router on a specific COM port.

The firmware upload failed, with a message on the PC that said it did not see the initial “D”.

Following googled instructions to remove power from the K3 for at least 30 seconds and then rerun the upload, I am getting nowhere.

When I re-apply power and then press the Power button, the radio immediately enters the “MCU LD” mode, with the TX LED blinking, that eventually stops with the yellow ^f LED on instead.

It seems that the PC is now unable to see any K3 serial communications and will not enable the “Send all firmware to the K3 button”. Which I guess I ned to do to restart the upload.

I do have a separate RS232 to USB adapter, although I need to find a cable that will actually allow me to physically plug it into the K3.

What to try next?
