Re: K3 won’t transmit SSB

Alan Baker

I can't see why Mic Gain, Bias, ALC, Comp, Filters, the PA, Tuner etc., etc., would be anything to do with it as the OP has already said - it transmits ok on LSB, which proves that at least 90% of the radio is OK.

Unfortunately the Subject line to this thread is ambiguous.

I'm not sure if there are any settings restrictions on the use of USB, but it sounds more like an internal switching issue. I can't remember all of the original post, but I presume it's receiving OK in all modes?

I suggest doing a total BACKUP, then a factory reset. At least that should eliminate a software issue.

Alan. G4GNX

Chip,

What is your MIC GAIN setting?  Do have MIC BIAS on or off?  Are you seeing ALC and COMP move the scale at all?  Any chance you don't have a filter set on transmit?  You need to have one for both CW and SSB to get any signal out.  That is easily checked with the K3 utility software.

Just throwing this out there. I'm not a data texting on the radio guy but some data modes used USB I seem to recall. Wonder if anything to do with that, anybody?

My K3 will not Transmit SSB on any frequency. However it will transmit CW and LSB on all frequencies.

All the menu and config settings are fine. Ant swr 1.2. Tried 2 different mic’s with no improvement. Mic setting is set for front and that’s where they are. All connections are secure.

Any suggestions?

Re error after KBPF3A mod to K3 RF board, 9V filter;
Most likely you put the ground (red side of cap) to the wrong via.
The arrow in the instructions covers the picture.
The ground is the one out in the vast area farther away from the 9V via. (Not the short trace nearby).
(and why the ground on the cap is RED is unknown to me!)

I think KPF3A requires a Config Adjustment.

Tnx Tom also for the e-mail with the driver. Somehow my friend manage to get all working including a new dll file for Win-Test. The other one was corrupt.

I will visit him shortly and check the Windows update and make some changes of which part not to be updated.

Windows update can do you a favor and provide the latest driver which in some cases will make your usb device connection useless.

When you finally get the correct driver back, you need to remove the “allow driver update” option from win 10, otherwise this will happen again.

Now, if this interface used a prolific chip, try this driver to get the USB interface recognized (and save the driver in a safe place).

I have read that this will happen to FTDI chip drivers also but I don’t have any information to help you.

For a friend I try to help with his setup.

PC is Windows 10, 64-bit and the Station is a Elecraft K3. The connection between PC and K3 is an USB cable in both ends.

We guess that a Windows update lost the driver between the K3 and the PC. When the USB is unplugged the error in device manager disappeard.

Does anyone know where to download a new driver for the K3 USB connection to Windows 10, 64-bit?

Sounds like maybe CW decode is on and it’s a spurious decode? It’s been quite a while since I used that, so I’d have to check the manual of n how to turn it on/off.

Or more likely, an issue with RF entering the USB circuit thru the cable.

I have experimented with many USB cables over the years, and the only one I have found to consistently be trouble free is the Tripp-Lite (1 foot or 6 foot) cable with built in ferrite beads at both ends.  (Available on Amazon for less than $10.).

I've had intermittent issues with USB disappearing and I know for sure that at least twice it happened just after I reached over the back of the K3S to check a different connector.
My 'cure' so far has been to unplug the USB connector on the back of the rig and re-plug it, whilst watching the Device Manager display on the PC it's connected to. I have an extension lead on the USB cable and unplugging it there and re-plugging has no effect. Re-booting the PC has no effect. Of course it could be that something is not quite 'seated' in the K3S, but as all other I/O works 100% reliably, I have my doubts. As I have a mess of cables behind the K3S, I suspect some form of mutual coupling, which gets disturbed when I reach over. I guess I should try some ferrites.

I'm taking chances by writing this, as it's not happened for some time, so I better watch out when I next switch on. :-D

I too had a problem when I reconnected a USB cable to my K3s. I found or so it seems the length of the USB cable is a problem. When I connected a 1.25 meter cable, the PC would see the K3s but would only RX with no TX, when fitting a 1.5 meter cable, it could not find the K3s at all. But when I tried a 600mm cable, BINGO, all’s well, PC found my K3s TX & RX. So I assume the shorter the cable the better, I am not a techy whizz kid so you tell me why 900mm of cable makes such a big difference? But it seems it does. Maybe my friend Andrew G8BYB might pick up on this thread as he may know more than me.
