Re: Proud new owner of a K3S!
Do take time to read the manual, cover to cover, 2 or 3 times. And download the K3 Utility and back up the present configuration. That way you will have a way to get back to a starting point.

Re: MIC bias settings
Heil HC4 and HC5 are Dynamic microphone elements. You do not want to place a bias voltage on them. The K3 places a voltage on the microphone line both on the front panel and rear panel. So using the HC4 or 5 you want bias OFF. The rear panel mic input is mono (ground and mic) so bias must be off for the HC4 or 5 or any dynamic mic like a PR781.
If you use an electret mic you need the bias ON to power the element. Both front and rear panel connections. Ben KJ4CC

Re: MIC bias settings
Yes if it is floating there is no reference to the common ground. Look at an XLR connector the mic has two connectors and you can choose to leave the mic floating or you can ground one side. Very much like a doublet antenna fed with a balanced feed line. On the rear panel connector, it's a mono plug so if you have a balanced mic like a PR781 you need to ground one side of the mike to common ground.
If you look at an XLR connection you'll see a ground line and two mic lines Pin 1 Sheild/Ground Pin 2 Positive Pin 3 Negative One of those mic lines is connected to the ground and so you have your two wires out for a mono connection. Make sure bias is OFF. Ben

Hello Again, Sorry for being so “mysterious” yesterday. Several of you have written, some with helpful suggestions, but many being curious about what I thought was “suspicious” about the KAT500 transaction. Briefly, I have learned when you place a “WTB:” ad on QTH.com, you often encounter one of the lurking scammers, who will offer to sell you the item you are wanting. They will spoof an unsuspecting, legitimate ham, who does not include an email address in their QRZ listing. There are several tell-tale signs of such an operation, and such was the case yesterday with the offer to sell me KAT500, SN 0296. I wrote this group yesterday, hoping that perhaps the rightful owner would step forward. Sure enough, last evening the real owner of the equipment contacted me. Interestingly, asking for a close-up photo clearly showing the Serial Number will usually stop these guys in their tracks, but yesterday the scammer provided me with that photo. These guys are becoming very sophisticated. Anyway, thanks for bearing with me while I outed this scammer. 73 es Stay Safe, Jim – WS6X

Re: KAT500
Jim: I have a KAT500 paired up with my KPA500. That pairs up with my
K3S and P3. Not hard to do, one just needs the correct cables
and follow the instructions in the manuals. Can't vouch for
the serial numbers. There are hundreds of the combination being operated every day.
As to how it mates with other radios, well you'll have a learning
process there and may need to fabricate your own proper cables. Works great........160M - 6M with 500 watts output on all bands.

Hello, I have a guy trying to sell me a used KAT500, SN 0296. He sent me an actual photo with the SN clearly showing. Also in the photo is KPA500 SN 0702. Something seems suspicious. I did a Google image search, but the results were inconclusive. Does anyone in this group own, or has ever owned this pair? Please contact me off list. Thanks, Jim – WS6X

Re: KAT500
Steve VE3RX
KAT500 and KPA500 are sold separately, or people by only one and then buy the other later. There is no correlation between the two sets of serial numbers. I bought both of mine at the same time as "kits" in late 2017/early 2018, and the serial for the KAT500 is in the 24xx range, and the KPA500 serial is in the 34xx range. Obviously they sell more KPA500 than KAT500.

Re: MIC bias settings
n7wy
Jim is technically correct, the MS document is a System Design Guide which guides using a resistor from the bias source to the ring and a separate resistor to the tip; not a single resistor supplying both connections.
Jim is correct that Elecraft (and also Heil) do it differently, but I never claimed either makes PCs compliant with the MS Guide. Elecraft was prudent to leave the ring in the rear panel mic jack open. Jim is also correct that USB sound card dongles that use a single resistor are not garbage, that is just where they wound up when they would not work with Heil's TS plug for the reasons I stated originally. Bottom line - caveat emptor.
