coverage? Will there not at least be hole in the coverage around the

filters, of your choosing. I, like many others, am drooling over this
rig and am looking
forward to Elecraft publishing detailed specifications. The K3 really
does look like a
winner. I've been looking at the Pro III and Omni VII, but am leaning

Thanks for the reply Joe. That's how I understood it too. It'll
really be interesting to see the initial test results. The "close in"
numbers and ultimate filter rejection are what people seem to be
watching for now.

I think the K3 will be very popular too, since its sub receiver has
the same receiver specs as the main receiver. That's really unique!

Maybe it switchs the first or second IF from - to + at the critical
frequency spot. In this way it is possible to have general coverage.
However for a downconverter general coverage to acchieve fair IF
image rejection for all frequencies is a challange. We will see.

In going over the FAQ on the Elecraft site, I found this had been added to address  your question:

General does not mean continuous in this case. There is a small gap at 8.215 MHz. You may be able to tune to this frequency, or not, depending on the firmware. There is a trap circuit to suppress response at this frequency, so the receiver won't work very well within several kHz of 8.215 MHz if it does allow you to tune there.

With more members coming on board to the group, I am wondering how many may have decided to take the plunge?  I made up my mind over the weekend. Since I expect there will be lots of activity here once the first shipments are made, I was thinking it might be fun to "survey" the group... find out how many folks have actually decided to buy one, and what options are hot items. I decided on the 100 watt version with the ATU, 2.1kHz, 6kHz, 15kHz (FM) roofing filters, and the general coverage xtal filter as well. I would love to have added the second receiver module... but, maybe I can talk Mrs. Claus into it as a Christmas gift! And, I guess that's how it will be... like I can remember as a youngster, waiting imptiently for Christmas day...    Man, it's gonna be a long summer!

Ordered a K3 kit with 2.8 and 400 hz 8 pole filters on 5/1 0830hrs.
I can get 500w out of the QRO2500 with 10 watts don't need the 100w.
Anxious to see it in Dayton Friday.
Wonder if anyone has seen any credit card activity yet on the down

I started my quest. First it began with the usual new rig offerings.

Then I started to do research. Plenty of it. After 6 months of solid
receiver research, etc. I have decided on the K3. So, when I do order (probably next year) I'll be getting the K3/100 with ATU,second
receiver and TCXO option. Filters will be the 2.1KHz-8 pole and the
400Hz-8 pole. I can have Santa bring other filters as time goes on.

This is going to be a great rig. From what I have researched (SDR
sites, serious technical papers on IMD, 3rd order IMD, selectivity,
etc.) Elecraft has hit the mark. Can't wait.

Hi,

You raise a very good question. I am following this group and the
TenTec Omni 7 group because I am considering a future purchase after a
very careful evaluation. The Omni 7 is out and I am frankly dismayed
by much of what I see reported in that group. After a few months they
are now at least on their 10th firmware release and there are still
scores of things that don't work correctly. So it's a very good
question to ask of current Elecraft owners if that's what can be
expected with the K3 release also. I can't wait to hear answers on
this one.

Rag, No such thing as dumb question, just dumb answer!! The answer to
your
question might be in the extensive FAQ at the Elecraft site... but, it
can
definitely be found in the on-line or mail-in order forms. The K3 is
supplied
with a 5-pole, 2.7 kHz crystal filter as "standard". Even if you order
yours
fully assembled, any options may be user-added at a later date. Makes
it nice
to know that it isn't just firmware that can be used to "upgrade" but
hardware
options, as well. I expect that the modular, no-solder kit, will
continue to be
likened to building a computer except for assembling the case which,
I'll bet,
will take more time than installing each module !!

Hi Guys,

Here is how I optioned mine. 10 watts, if I like it I'll upgrade it t
o 100 watts. $1399. Cool. Comes with a 2.7 roofing filter and a noise
blanker. Great deal.

$99 TXCO - passed on that, I don't need 1 ppm precision when 5 ppm
comes with the radio. That's good for CW and SSB (my modes).

$99 General Coverage - purchased that, because without it, the ham
band filters are engaged and that means serious attenuation of any
SWL frequency that is more than a couple hundred kilohertz away from
a ham band edge.

$120 AM filter - nope, although it's required for AM transmit, 10
meters is the only band where I might use it and I have hollow state
rigs for that. The stock rig is good for AM receive.

$99 FM filter - nope, again it's required for FM transmit, but 6 and
10 meters are the places for that and I do CW and SSB there. I'm also
not sure about CTSS on the K3.

$79 CW Filter - nope, my choice would be 800hz, I'll wait for the
variable filters. (coming).

What a great starting point for a reliable core station, and I expect
there will be all manner of kits that will support the radio, since
they would be less likely to require SMT. (fleas). ;-)

$539 Subreceiver - for contests, not needed here for search & pounce.
$99 DVR - for contests, not needed here for search & pounce.
$259 Auto tuner - not yet.
$79 Transverter - not yet.
$39 USB adapter - not yet.

The biggest selling points of the radio for me are the taylorable AGC
and the reputation of Elecraft for designing a radio I can count on.

I always use a speaker and enjoy hearing a louder signal when it's
bigger. That works all the way up to "room filling". There are not
many rigs these days that will allow that because the AGC is
oppressive and overbearing, ruthless and just plain mean. ;-)

I just got back from Dayton and there was quite a crowd around the
Elecraft booth all weekend. They're taking lots of orders. I was going
to purchase a new radio at Dayton and had narrowed it down to the FT-
2000 or possibly the IC-756ProIII. Then they announced the IC-7700 and
K3. After reading everything I could, the K3 is the front-runner. I
didn't purchase one yet but it's in the crosshairs. My main interests
are contesting and DXing, especially on top-band (160m). It's very
important to have a bullet proof front-end and exceptional filtering. I
believe the K3 will be outstanding in this area and has all the bells
and whistles you can think of. Can't wait to see the reviews from
actual users.
