For WEAK signal work what would be the optimum settings (or a starting point) to set the AGC parameters, on page 54, of the owners manual?

Thanks, Jim K3QYR

Exactly the same problem s/n 612.
Stopped from one day to the next. Tried reloading the firmware, EEINIT etc but no luck.
Connected with TRX Manager or HR Deluxe the K3 worked normally. Just all pushbutton functioens on the frontpanel failed.
Elecraft have been very supportive trying to find the fault but in the end asked me to return te frontpanel.
Waiting for their response now.

In my case (SN 1153) the rig was well out of warranty. I paid for the repairs. When Elecraft receives and repairs a given rig, a 90-day warranty period begins. During that 90-day period, a part failed in my rig. Elecraft mailed me the replacement part (free of charge) and a new "paid" mailing label to return the defective board (KAT3).

Eric,

Mine failed on Saturday...all at once. First thought was firmware problem. Loaded and reloaded the firmware several times with no luck. Then tried the EEINIT, but no luck. Yet, when connected to Ham Radio Deluxe the K3's button functions work via software. Hence, good reason to assume a K3 hardware failure of some sort.

Note this does not assume a button failure or keypad failure, but failure of the "logic" of the buttons and their function. If some buttons don't function at all, while others perform a different assignment than designated (e.g., RX ANT does AGC, M>V does DVR, etc.) it would appear to be a "logic" issue...not a button or keypad problem.

Art's experience is the same as mine. I received feedback from one or two other K3 owners who experienced the same failures. In all instances their units were returned to Elecraft due to a "switching matrix" failure. I called tech support on Monday and was given the same diagnosis. My K3 goes out today.

The rig in question was already sent to Elecraft, repaired and returned. In my rig's situation, the front panel was replaced. The only button on the front panel that acted properly was the POWER switch - it doesn't "run through" the switching matrix.

Came into the shack, turned on the rig and tried to change bands. Something else happened. Tried a couple of other buttons - virtually none of them did what was expected.

Like the previous "reportee" I also re-installed the latest firmware to no avail. Elecraft deduced the switching matrix had died and it went back to the factory.

Certainly I'm no expert on the subject just because I was a "victim," but my understanding of the "switching matrix" is that the voltage "exiting" the matrix is measured and that determines what button or sequence of buttons was pressed. Although I assembled my own rig from a "kit," the front panel was essentially a single installation (plus the knobs), so there was no "investigation" of what the various boards/circuits on that panel consist of.

Now I'm curious ...... does the "dreaded switching matrix failure"
happen all at once? Or does it slowly (or quickly) develop into a
full failure?
I have switches, normally when I press and hold, that do nothing the
first time I press and hold - this is after a period of non-activity
of any of the switches. As I hold it in, I can wiggle it and press
harder, and nothing happens. If I let go and press and hold again I
get the function. Since I haven't read, or heard, much about it, I
figured it was me.
Is this an early sign of the "DSMF" - the dreaded switching matrix failure?

Hello John,

The VFO A, VFO B knob error in the manual is covered in Errata B3-4 of 8 March 2010.

Enjoy the K144XV!

Having installed mine I find it receives very well but on tx there is some kind of fault between the mixer and the driver which even with Gary's excellent help I have failed to find.

Not to worry though - a replacement unit is on the way to me and brains bigger than mine will no doubt fix the faulty one when I return it to Elecraft.

Good morning all

At last, my 2m module arrived yesterday - 18 days door to door. It was very
well packed.

I spent the evening installing it in my K3/10. It was quite a simple process
and it included swapping out the KXV3 for the new KXV3A. In all it took
around 2 hours and by far the most awkward part came right at the end,
refitting the speaker lead to the I/O board. The transverter module limits
access to this area. I don't have the 100w PA, ATU or the sub receiver
fitted.

It looks like there's an error in the K144XV manual regarding frequency
calibration. Entering the frequency offset for ones specific module involves
the use of the VFO A and B knobs and I found that in my case A and B were
transposed.

The module is very sensitive and A/B comparisons with another outboard
transverter are very favourable. A small amount of frequency drift is
evident by ear in the first few seconds after switch-on but it very quickly
settles.

Power output is measured at 9.5w maximum on an old Bird 43 and it can be
reduced to very low levels. It is necessary to use the "tune" button to set
the power prior to using SSB. If this is not done the output level tends to
wander.

There are several low level spurious signals on the receiver, with a dummy
load attached. The loudest is one on 144.004, fortunately this is not a
frequency many of us use. I note that a spurious is also evident on 28.004
without the transverter. The other spurious signals are all evident on both
the K144XV and my other outboard transverter.

All in all, a very useful addition, and I'm looking forward to the next 2m
contest, when I can give it a thorough test.

Regards

Remember......your watt meter is likely +/- 10% or worse.  Even the touted Bird 43 under good conditions is +/-5%, and depending on the slug, I've seen them worse.

Don't get picky over 100 watts.  Remember, one S unit is 6 DB and at a nominal 100 watts,  that's the difference between 25 watts on the low end to 400 watts on the high end.

Just for grins, the differentce between 100 watts and 90 watts is 0.5 dB and the differnence between 100 watts and 110 watts is 0.4 dB.

My take....... a good sounding mike used with a good radio doesn't need any EQ.  However, a bad sounding mike and a good sounding radio with applied EQ sounds like a bad mike that has EQ added.  From an old retired studio recording engineer,  EQ won't fix a problem, it will just make it sound different.

Bad audio is bad audio.  Like crap in a bucket......the more one stirs it the more it stinks.

Dropped from $44 to $9.95 - can be good enough for K3 equalizers or running through computer.

Is 105 to 115 watts normal or am I overdriving the amplifier and need to
look further?

Thanks....

If the rig is past the 1year warrenty does Elecraft cover the expenses or do we have to pay for this repair?

Thanks,

Hi Art - This almost certainly is not a failure of the physical keypad itself. That would not impact all buttons at once. We rarely see any front panel key failures, and when we have, it rarely is the keypad itself.

Contact our tech's via k3support@... to have them help figure out what has happened. It could be due to an odd firmware glitch, or in very rare cases, a cold solder joint on the pcb. Sometimes an EEINIT or a f/w reload can solve an issue like this, but check with them first before doing an EEINIT, as all parameters will need to be re-entered into the K3.

Dropped from $44 to $9.95 - can be good enough for K3 equalizers or running through computer.
