You have a vivid imagination. That may be what you thought, but it's not what I wrote. Indeed, I suggested that you ask on the Elecraft reflector, with the principals both hang out.

Re: K3 to K3S Upgrade Parts Question

Jim,

1. I work for a hospital.
2. I read this group multiple times a day.

So, yes, I am very aware of what's going on with supply chain, COVID, wildfires, etc.

The email I got when ordering availability was announced said to expect shipment sometime in June. While I certainly don't expect delivery the first week in June, Field Day isn't until the LAST week of the month this year. So, my question seems perfectly reasonable. If the answer is, "No", then so be it. That's fine, and I'm patient.

However, my club often uses my K3 as one of its Field Day stations. So, I would like to be able to tell everyone, with some degree of confidence, what its capabilities will, or won't be.

That said, I would greatly appreciate a reasonable, appropriate answer from someone who might know, instead of a snide, backbiting, sarcasm-laced remark. Elecraft sales is busy enough without having to answer my piddling question, and I know many of Elecraft's staff follow this group. If I could get a simple answer from someone in the know, that's all I ask.

KAT500 single band fault

David Aslin

Consulting the hive mind:

I have for many years used the K3/KPA500/KAT500 combination at home and on 6Gs DXpeditions.  It has been faultless until this week.

Setup: On all bands 20-6m I use an Ultrabeam antenna (same principle as Steppir) so the KAT500 is set to Bypass.  SWR ranges up to 1.2:1 depending on frequency and band

Symptom: the KAT500 and KPA500 fault with High SWR.  The LEDs show 3:1.  This only happens on 12m; other bands work as expected

Fault finding so far: antenna analyser on the Ultrabeam on 12m shows SWR of 1.2:1.

Suggests antenna OK, so replaced antenna with dummy load: KAT500/KPA500 fault as before on 12m only.

Antenna had been connected to Port 2 of the KAT500; dummy load also connected to Port 2.

Moved dummy load to Port 3.  Setup runs as normal. Moved antenna to Port 3. Setup runs as normal across all bands 20m-6m.

Conclusion: there is a problem with Port 2 of the KAT500, but only on 12m.

Suggestions of how to troubleshoot this Port 2 issue with KAT500 gratefully received!

BTW, I built all my Elecraft products from kits, so happy to open up the box and do board or component level troubleshooting/replacement; I just need guidance on how to nail down the problem.

If you've been paying attention here, on Elecraft's own reflector, or even newspapers, you'll take the pessimistic view. Virtually ALL manufacturing has supply chain problems -- everything from construction to vehicles. We're all swimming around in the same soup.

K3 to K3S Upgrade Parts Question

Ian Kahn

Happy Friday, all!

Last week, I ordered, with full payment down, all the available K3 to K3S upgrade components, for this final run. I have a quick question about that. I know the orders are expected to ship in June. Was there ever an expectation set on whether or not we'll have the upgrades in time to get our K3s ready for Field Day? If there was no information in that regard, could someone with familiarity (maybe from Elecraft?) chime in on whether or not parts receipt well before Field Day is a reasonable expectation? I totally understand if it isn't. I just want to make sure I set my own expectations appropriately.

Thanks and 73,

Ian, NV4C

Keith,

I am trying to round out my very last radio station using a K3 Line by trying to purchase your digital multi data display for KPT500 and KPA500.

A couple of days ago I was able to place one of the two to in my "shopping bag" but I was not able to get back and  put the second one in.

Today, I retried. Now I am not able to get to your shopping bag the step before check out.

I guess, I am having a problem and not you.

How can I overcome your resistance to sell me your  KPA500 and KAT500 display products?

PS: I am 84 years old and a HAM since 1956.

Daniel – you may pay a deposit of ½ the amount of the purchase and pay the rest just before shipping (they’ll email you with the 2nd amount, including shipping, etc) or you may pay the full amount up front.  Your choice. I don’t know the pros and cons of going either way – e.g., are you demoted if you only pay ½?  I don’t know.  I paid ½.  Bob – W3DK

Hello Greg:
I am getting one in, in about two weeks.  It will come out of a radio that was factory built.  I save it for you if no one else responds.  If you have any other K3 Boars you want to trade, let me know.

***FS: Elecraft K3S-Twin remote system, inc K3S with Tuner*** #forsale #remoterig

Graham Alston

The Elecraft K3S Twin Remote system provides a highly flexible means for controlling the K3S transceiver in the next room via a LAN, or across the country via the internet.

It provides a control head unit that is exactly the same as the front panel of the K3S. It enables 100% recreation of the remote transceiver operation at your fingertips.

No modifications to the K3S are required.

Included:

Elecraft K3S/100 transceiver with ATU

Elecraft K3S/0-Mini console

2.7KHz CW filter

500Hz CW filter

MH4 Elecraft hand mic

2 x RemoteRig MKII interfaces (local/WiFi + remote)

K3S Manual

All cable sets for local and remote units

Plug pack power supplies for control console and RemoteRig interfaces

I’ve used the this system on my remote station, and it has proven extremely reliable over mobile data link. I have used FT8, RTTY, phone, CW with absolutely no problems. Of course you could also use this system to “remote” your home station, allowing you to access it from anywhere.

The only reason for selling is that I have changed to Flex radios now that the mobile phone tower at the remote site has been upgraded to 4G and I can run greater bandwidth with lower latency.

This is your chance to build a remote station and still experience the pleasure of operating the rig as if you were in front of it. It really is identical! I use a small case which contains the control head, mic, and RemoteRig interface which I take overseas on holidays. I’ve operated from all over the world “remoteing” back to my remote station using the Twin system.

Everything is is perfect condition with no marks or scratches.

Purchased new in 2018. Single owner. I have the original receipts if required.

See here how it works:

Happy to do Zoom or FaceTime to show equipment in operation.

Includes postage from VK. Insurance extra $200.

Sell for $4300.

BTW, using the speed of light c = 299.792 458 Mm/s, the wavelength of 3.775 MHz is 79.415 m. Here are some typical wavelengths within the band:
bottom of the band: 3.5 MHz: 85.655 m
ITU Zone 2 band midpoint: 3.75 MHz: 79.945 m
ITU Zone 2 top of the band: 4 MHz: 74.948 m

Bottom line: We don't need to distinguish between parts of this very large band. 80 m is a good rounded summary of the entire band in Zone 2.

Some other bands tell a different story. We should call 60 m either 56 m for the new international band, or 57 m for the old, messy channelized USA allocation. 40 m should be 42 m. 20 m should be 21 m. 15 m should be 14 m. Do the math and draw your own conclusions.
