Have you tried another mike?   Could be a bad mike, bad cable, or connector/wiring.   Also check the MIC gain {front panel knob} for a value of 30 to 50.  And you are in USB or LSB mode.   There will be no output in TX in SSB mode unless you speak into the mike.   Otherwise, no audio = no output.

I believe you need the Bias voltage for an Elecraft Mic.

Tap 2 when you are in the MIC SEL=FPH menu

K3S parasitic oscillation

Paul Bowen <paulbowen@...>

Thanks for the replies I have spoken with Dave and past on the information
to him.
Just to add his antenna is a dipole cut for 7mhz with traps for 80m and
works fine with all his other HF rigs
Including a K3.

The ATU is a Palstar good to 1kw. Dave brought the rig second hand and he`s
convinced it's the PA.
The radio was hardly used by the previous owner who found the radio was
beyond him.

Cheers

Subject: [Elecraft-K3] K3S parasitic oscillation

Hi

A friend of mine has a K3S he`s 90 years old and does not do the internet so
I have been tasked with helping him find a solution.
I have tried to get support from Elecraft and their just not interested in
helping out the rig has been to the UK dealer at least three times yet still
the problem persists.
They cannot replicate the problem so have washed their hands of it now.

The K3S is fine when used with 10 watts and fine with 100 watts into a dummy
load. When used with the ATU and a power above 10 watts the K3S goes into
parasitic oscillation in bands from 80m and above.
All other HF rigs when used with the same setup are fine including a K3,
Icom IC 7300. The K3S serial number is 11871.

Cheers

This has nothing to do with an earth connection. What you are addressing, and what matters, are SHIELDING and BONDING.

I don't know if this is a possibility with the K3S, but it did occur with the ICOM IC-706MKIIG. Some transceivers after a change in the final output transistors would break into oscillation around 11 MHz. The problem was only seen when using the 15 meter and 17 meter bands and the impedance seen at the antenna connector was a major factor. The problem was often resolved by tightening the screws attaching the various circuit boards to the case and by cleaning a number of spring ground clips. I believe the eventual solution involved additional design changes in the radio.

Re: K3S Power Down

Rick NK7I

Mike,

I have not done this; but use a special Y cable on my K3 so the SteppIR controller can copy the frequency of the radio (which is connected to a computer).  So it should be possible.  (The SteppIR controller has two ports, one to the computer, one from the radio; so no computer is required for the SteppIR to track with the radio and adjust as needed.)

Note that I said only the data FROM the Arduino, not a two way conversations.  All devices would have to be at the same bit rate, the K3S would not be allowed to send data to the Arduino (on the same serial port).

There are a lot of variables to consider and much of it is beyond what I've done.

If you are using the USB port on the K3S, perhaps there is a way to share it with both the RemoteHam and the Arduino?  Have the Arduino talk to the computer running RemoteHam to cause a macro ("PS0;") to be sent?

GL,
Rick NK7I

Rick,

I've been wondering about that, sharing the serial port.  On my LDMOS amp project (uses an Arduino Mega, 4 Serial Ports).  I'm wondering how I could share ports, if I would just parallel them?  I've also considered putting in a relay where every time the Arduino wanted to talk to the K3, that it would first open the relay to disconnect it from the rest of the system.

Have you don this before?
