Re: KX3 audio

Jim Brown

Hi Larry,

AG6EE uses a KX3 extensively with WSJT-X grid expedition. The KX3 does not have built-in USB audio. The serial interface is, indeed, for control. Although he COULD use a suitable set of adapter cables to get audio back and forth between the KX3 and computer, he uses an Xonar USB interface to get improved dynamic range than the computer's built-in sound system.

What MAY be your problem is that the most laptops and also the KX3 use 4-circuit jacks and plugs for including audio. All of this is in the KX3 user manual. As I recall, there may be one or more software switches to change how the jacks function. I don't use my KX3 this way, so I don't remember details. There are lots of adapter cables, for example, to split off mic and headphones separately. In the KX3, one of the pins in the mic jack is PTT. In computers, two contacts are used for L & R phones, one for mic input, with the shell as return for both.

Another good reason for using a USB audio interface like the Xonar is that you can plug in headphones and listen to the RX instead of needing to use a Y-cable to split the KX3 headphone output between computer and phones.

There's an app note on my website about USB audio interfaces. k9yc.com

Ordering matched filter sets

Mike Kopacki

Back in 2015, Wayne said "In diversity mode, the main and sub RX synthesizers are guaranteed to be phase-locked to each other if the crystal filters selected for main and sub both have exactly the same frequency offset. The offset for all 8-pole filters is 0.00. The offset for 5-pole filters varies, and can be ordered in matched sets for main/sub."

Since Elecraft does not have all the filters at this time, does this apply to filters ordered directly from International Radio, specifically the 8-pole 2100 Hz and 8-pole 250 Hz filters? If I purchase two of each of these, will the offset be 0.00 for all four filters?

Thanks,

Questions on availability will be on whether these options will yield more money if sold separately, or when a K3 is sold with said option installed
The K3's I've looked into were backup units or "vacation house" and were pretty plain without many options.

But, feedback would be nice. "Has my en query form been received correctly?"

Larry,

First, you should not need an external sound card.  If you go into Control Panel and select Sound, you will have a Playback and Recording Tabs.  These should be where you point WSJT-X in setup. Also turn off Windows Sounds while you are there.

You need to set the KX3 to ASFK A mode per the manual on Page 18.

You will need a cable(s) to connect the Phones and Mic on the KX3 to the (what is probably a Headset) combo Mic/Headphone jack on the laptop.

This should get you going.

Yes you will need a time sync program to make sure computer time is on time. There are several out there. If you have audio going to computer WSJT will work with out the CAT interface. You will just need to band changes manually. Getting computer time within 1/2 second is crucial.

Re: Looking for a K3S

Bob

While you are probably correct from a total market perspective, there are some (me for instance) who’ll still be looking to upgrade our K3/K3s.

My K3s is in a home station lashup with a KPA500/KAT500 so I never bought the internal tuner. My plan is to use the K4 I have on order to replace the K3s at home and take the K3s into the field. It would be more convenient to do that if it had an internal antenna tuner so my expression of interest will turn into an order if/when production resumes.

I don’t know how many like me there will be out there but I suspect that once the K4s hit a number of new K3K3s owners will be looking to upgrade there rigs. I think the problem Elecraft will face in meeting that demand is the time lag. The present solicitation is being responded to by current owners. Most of the demand I see will come from new owners. I do not see how Elecraft can sensibly measure that demand until it actually arises. I don’t know many hams who would order a sub-receiver today in the hopes of getting a K3 at an attractive price down the road.

My guess is that nothing will happen now until they have the radio called the "K4" into production.

There will then probably be loads of second hand K3 K3S (and other accessories that folks strip out of their radios) coming onto the market and the expressions of interest will not develop into firm orders ...... just my thoughts.

Based on discussions I had earlier with Elecraft, you should hear something about your request in January/February, provided you have completed the interest form. I’d give it a few more weeks.
