Hi Mel,

Is the updated, new synth, for the K3 closer to the one in the K3S, or

is it the same?

I know adding the new synth to my K3 made a big difference...

See:

https://www.nk7z.net/k3/

I did some screen shots of the P3, showing my neighbor 700 feet away,

running 100 watts as we both went from the old to the new synths in the

following steps:

1.  Both old synth.

2.  New Synth in distant rig.

3.  New synth in my rig.

The differences are clearly visible...

P3 Power Sensor data spurs on 160M

Stewart G3RXQ

Having spent some time chasing groups of S6/7 carriers spaced at ~2.5kHz on 160M.
I have traced them to data signals from the P3 being injected into the DCHF-2000 coupler.

To check that this was the case, and that no other pick-up mechanism was involved I connected
the coupler to my K3 with a dummy load directly on its output. Removing the data link to the P3
removes the spurs.

Anyone else experienced this and found the solution ?

CW from keyboard?

I can type into the P3 transmit window from the keyboard, do ctrl T and transmit what I have typed. But, with VOX turned on, I type and it still fills the transmit window and won't transmit until I hit ctrl T. What am I needing to do to transmit while typing?

This is the original K0 in the same chassis box as the K3, not the K0 Mini.
The Remote Rig devices come with the Elecraft cable set.
Everything should be working fine but I have not tested any of it.
Does anyone know what these things should be going for these days?

RS232 Splitter (S/B - K3 and WSJTX) SOLVED

Bob Chortek

First, I’d like to thank everyone who offered suggestions to help me get my K3 working with WSJTX without using CAT control.  Your input and encouragement were much appreciated.

The problem has been solved and the K3 is working fine with WSJTX.

To help those who want to use their K3 (and who don’t have the KIO3B with internal sound card) without CAT control, here
are the key problems/solutions I faced:

1.  First, setting the Rig to “None” under the Radio tab in WSJTX was a HUGE step forward.  The post/article I read about using the K3 without CAT never mentioned NOT to enter K3 in the Rig menu and instead to select None.  Seems obvious in retrospect but it took me hours of fiddling and a good nights sleep before it finally dawned on me this morning.

2.  Then, selecting a different Speaker output under Windows made the tone I was then hearing from the computer speakers disappear.  Turns out the audio was (incorrectly) being routed to the computer speakers instead of to the K3. This problem did not become apparent until I solved problem number 1 above.

3.  Finally, after setting 1 and 2 correctly, changing the Output to “Both” instead of “Mono” under the Audio tab in WSJTX would put the K3 in TX and all was well.

All the other usual settings (Data A mode, Line In, etc. etc.) had been set correctly.

I was like a blind man stumbling in the dark.

The KEY was when I finally realized the Rig Control Error message I kept getting (which prevented me from seeing problems 2 and 3) was because it was impossible for WSJTX to communicate with the K3 without CAT so I needed to set the Rig to None.  DUH, but NOBODY suggested that could be the problem.  Lesson learned when trying to use a K3 WITHOUT CAT control.

If I had had the proper interface cable in the first place that would never have been an issue, but that’s been ordered.

I learned a lot but it was painful!

BTW - none of the problems I had had anything to do with the K3 -   They were all errors in the settings for Windows and WSJTX!

BTW- Although I am using the internal sound card in Windows 10, I went into the Sound menu and changed a sound setting to “no Windows sounds” so sounds generated by the computer are not transmitted with the audio generated by WSJTX.

Thanks again everyone for your help!

73,

Bob AA6VB

“ 6) In WSJTX select File -> Settings -> Audio and set
Output to the Speaker endpoint of the sound card to
which you have connected the the K3 Line In”

I don’t know how to interpret that statement. I read the words but I
don’t understand them. Shows how little I know about computers.
I'm flabbergasted ... that statement is about as straight forward as
it can be. Perhaps the pictures on page 2 of this document will
help: <http://www.microham.com/Downloads/U3_WSJT-X_Setup.pdf>

DOES MY COMPUTER HAVE MORE THAN ONE SOUND CARD?
Probably not.

Are you suggesting I should buy an outboard sound card.
*ABSOLUTELY* Without it you will be just another of those *illegally*
(if you are licensed in the Unites States) transmitting Windows
"noises", streaming audio and other garbage on the digital windows -
particularly if you are using VOX to control your transceiver.

Using a single (Windows Default) sound card with VOX leaves your
transmitter out of your control.

I wish K1JT et al would program WSJTX so it would refuse to generate
audio on the sound card designated as either the "Default" Sound Card or
"Default Communications Device". That would go a long way to cleaning
up the bands.

RS232 Splitter -Finally Solved!

Bob Chortek

Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions.

I think we have done it!

Here was the secret to success:

1.  Setting the Rig to “None” under the Radio tab in WSJTX was a HUGE step forward. The article I read about using a K3 on FT8 “without” CAT control never mentioned the need to set the Rig to None.  Should have been obvious to me but I spent hours fiddling with various settings before it finally occurred to me.  Duh!  This allowed me to actually more forward.  A good night’s sleep and it finally dawned on me!

2.  Selecting a different output under Windows made the tone I was then hearing disappear.  The audio was not being sent to the K3 and was instead being routed to the computer speakers.  After selecting the proper Audio Output in Windows the audio was then routed to the K3.

3.  Finally, changing the Output to “Both” instead of “Mono” under the Audio tab in WSJTX solved the “No TX problem.”

Hooray!

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate everyone’s help!!!!

The K3 will now go into TX and I can finally adjust the ALC to 4 bars with the 5th just flickering.

I’ve only tested it into a dummy load (works fine) so the next step is to try to make some contact but it LOOKS GOOD!

Decodes 100 percent using an RX antenna and TX fine into the dummy load.

Thanks Everyone!
