Well that’s odd, switched the rig off and on and it’s working perfectly..

External transverter set up

Hi, bear with me, newby question. Setting up my K3 for driving external transverters with the KXV-3 all seems to be working OK, have the VHF bands all programmed in from 1 to 4 however when I go back to use the rig on HF I have no power out. What do I need to turn off to get full power back on HF?, I’m sure it’s simple and I have RTFM 😑

Mine popped the pills because the board that provides the protection failed, according to Elecraft repair. There were no adverse operating conditions: turned it on, first dit, kapow. Drive was something like 18w. Coax, switch, antenna were all ok.

Under what operating conditions would have caused the finals to fail?
I have a early model of the KPA500, sn 804 and it's been flawless.  I have it connected with the KAT500 and my K3s.
I wouldn't mind finding another one.

Well I did the transmit gain as well first and maybe that fixed it and not the next step I took.  I should have done the TX Gain first at the location in the house but I swapped the rigs first to eliminate the amp.  OH well it seems to be working now and I know that someone else had the same issue.  Maybe it was TRICK or TREAT..  LOL

Hi Ed,

I had the same problem a while ago with my KPA1500, it would max out and trip out even when the K3 said I was only running 25 watts. My SWR is 1.4:1 on 160, so that shouldn’t be an issue. I pulled my hair out trying to figure out why. I finally decided to do a TXgain calibration. That corrected the problem and I haven’t had an issue since.

My question is why did the TXgain change. It has been working fine for many years.

Glad you got it cured. It can be frustrating !

Well my K3S (10853) started tripping my KPA1500 on transmit with little or no power on 6 Meters.  You could see when I would key down that the SWR meter on the 1500 would go to max then drop off even with the amp in standby.  I replaced it with (10858) my Man Cave rig and it worked OK,  I realized that my second rig had the ATN6 in menu TXGN HP and wasn’t an issue.  So I followed the instructions on Elecraft’s Web Page and did the same thing to 10853 and it now appears to not trip the amp and I’m not seeing the SWR meter on the 1500 going HI then LOW.

My question is The reading on 10858 in TXGN HP reads ATN6 31 and using the same criteria and dummy load, 10853 reads at TXGN HP, ATN6 96.  I wonder if I still have the problem 10853 and with the added pad just reduced the issue to where it works or seems to on 6.

I sent in a ticket to Elecraft over the weekend but haven’t had a response yet.  Not a big deal but thought some Guru out there might have run into the same issue.  I’m just wondering if I still have a problem or not.

Thanks Ed.. AB4IQ

Re: finals

I've always wondered why Elecraft pushes the envelope with this amplifier --- the VRF2933 is a 50-volt device with a max D/S of 170 V, yet the capacitive input of the power supply idles the devices at around 70 volts, yielding 140+ on RF peaks.

Why didn't they use the VRF2844 instead? See attached app note.

Reduced K3 Gain

Drew Vonada-Smith K3PA

All,

After operating CQ WW SSB on the K3, I am finding that it has too much gain for my liking on good antennas.  Yes, I know how to tweak the AGC parameters, and yes, I ride the RF gain control.  But the goal is to have the gain close to optimum before those things.  It never bothered me on CW, but on 40 M SSB...ughh.

As an example, on 20M I had to use the 10 dB attenuator all the time.  On 40, the attenuator was not nearly enough and 20 dB would have been desirable.

Has anyone exerimented with increasing the value of the attentuator?  This is a partially updated K3 so I only have 10 dB.  Alternatively, is there any hidden menu item that permits adjustment of IF gain?  Can one "game" the filter gain compensation, for example?

I already use the RX ANT loop for other things and do not want to fool with that.

Drew K3PA

Re: Question about shipping.

Customer support told me to remove the transformer before shipping my KPA500. If you leave the transformer in the amplifier it will cost you over $100 each way to ship it to Elecraft. Without the transformer about $50. My finals went out during the height of COVID-19 when they were shutdown. I didn't get it back for almost 3 months and in the meantime I thought it would be good to have a 2nd amplifier so I bought and Acom 1000. I have procrastinated and haven't tackled the job of putting the transformer back in the KPA500 yet. Mine is factory built. If you download the construction manual for the kit (if you built it yourself ) the instructions are pretty detailed on how to do it.

Sorry I meant to say $600 total . That included shipping.

Bob,

I had the same thing happen to mine this past Spring. I sent it back to Elecraft and it cost me around $600 plus shipping to have it repaired. You will save a lot on shipping if you take out the transformer. I got mine back but haven't got around to putting the transformer back in since I bought an Acom 1000 for my main amplifier. Be careful taking our the screws on the lid. They are easy to strip.

My rig is cranking 75W into a dummy load on 5.000 MHz.  I did use the band unlock that Elecraft sent me on a K3S.  I'm limited between 25 and 28MHz (11 meter/CB) to just the low power amp, so about 14 or 15 into the load.   As soon as the high power amp kicks in, it won't transmit anything and says "BAND END".  24.999999 MHz, no problem.    28.000000 no problem, 27.999999 and "BAND END" and no power out if the high power amp is kicked in.

I have used the band editor to open freq for CAP and MARS sucessfully. The one odd thing is that some bands will open on the 10W board but not on the 100W board. when trying to operate at 100W I got a band end message, but when i dial down to under 12W it will transmit. I posed the question directly to Elecraft and they confirmed that that is the case.

Thanks for the words of encouragement and I agree in theory it must be pretty easy.

However, upon reflection I think a much easier approach for me, which probably has "good enough" functionality is to simply extend some of the cables and go with the following located in the passenger seat area;

1) KPOD (with an extension cable)
2) Small VGA monitor mounted on the dash with a VGA cable long enough to reach the P3 in the back of the Jeep
3) Foot switch, headphones etc extended to passenger seat
4) Win4K3 running to control some aspects of the radio

All round its probably easier than using a K3/0 mini

KPA500 blown finals - VRF 2933

Bob Hammond G4DBW

Hi,
My KPA500 S/No 1278 decided it had enough of CQWW SSB this weekend and popped the tops off the PA transistors VRF2933 . First time ever I had used the amp at the UK full legal limit of 400W.  Amp is 7 years old now and first time I have had the lid off since assembling the kit.

So I can replace the transistors - nothing else is showing signs of damage... but what is the correct bias current setting for these devices ?

Anyone carried out a replacement of their PA transistors on the KPA 500 ?
