Lou,

Check with Elecraft first and ask for a support person first before shipping the transformer. They will tell you if they need it in order to repair your unit. Most cases they do not.

Best regards,

Re: K3 Schematics

Hello Joe (W4TV),
Looking at the AF filters on p. 28 you will find that the schematics and the component values and types are exactly the same as in the circuit diagram on p.35 except the part designators. For example R63 vs. R1, R67 vs. R2, U30A...D vs. U1A...D, etc.
In order to simulate the filter circuit I need to know the DC bias voltage at the inputs of the filters on pp. 35 and 28 respectively.
I will use an AC source with 4VDC component (VCC8A/2) in order to calculate the filter responses.
Thank you for calling my attention to p. 28 of the schematics file.

Before I go down (or up) to my FedExp packaging store, I would like to investigate one more option.

I noticed that the KPA500 dimensions are practically the same with my K3, except the fan. Removing the fan seems very easy (4 screws) however the disconnection of the black and red wires seems to be hard.

Question: Have anybody removed that fan and how difficult procedure  is that?

If I can remove the fan, I could use the Elecraft box used by the Elecraft to return my K3 after upgrading it.

I hope one of you have this info.

Before you go down this rabbit hole, why not call Elecraft and see what they say about the advisability of removing the fan and the transformer?  I presume you’re returning the unit for repair, so one would think that they would want to receive your unit ‘as is’ without removing key components.  By removing items, you now force Elecraft to put back what you’ve removed, and that adds cost (e.g. time to reinstall what you removed, then removing those components before they ship back to you) and you could potentially cause further issues if you happen to cross a connection that you had removed when the unit is returned to you.  Who knows, the items you don’t include in the return may have a bearing on whatever ails the KPA500 (e.g. a manifestation of "Murphy’s Law.”)

Last comment:  If you ship the amp back to Elecraft in your K3 box, you’ve now lost the packaging for the K3.  Since you don’t have the KPA500 packaging, why not ship ‘as is’ (e.g. with transformer and fan properly installed) having the UPS store (or equivalent) do the packaging and then when the KPA500 is shipped back to you, ask Elecraft to ship it back in a KPA500 factory box?  That way, you have the proper packaging in the event you need to ship it again sometime in the future.

K3, microHAM microKeyerII, WSJT-X, on 30m

Chris Cox, N0UK

Good day, one and all.

I finally got my K3 working with WSJT-X/RumLogNG running on my macOS box and connected via the microKeyer II sound card to the K3’s line-in/out connectors.

It took some struggling with the various configuration files to get WSJT-X to correctly interface with the RumLog’s built-in Microham router code but it’s working - except on 10MHz.

I can’t see any band-specific differences in the K3’s config but in data mode, the software won’t key up on that band. Also, if I try to force the rig into transmit using the XMIT button, the rig doesn’t switch to transmit and the display shows the generic N/A error message.

The whole system works on every other band I’ve tried (40, 20, 17, and 10 metres) but will not seem to work on 30.

Any thoughts?

Hi Rich

Measure the connection from paddle to RFC3 and RFC4 at the main board within the K3.
You can also measure to pin 4 and 5 of the front panel connector.

That will show yes/no proper connectivity to the Dot/Dash input.

My K3S s/n 11064 has a new problem, which first occurred on Sunday October 4, 2020.

My primary mode is CW, and since the radio arrived in December 2016, I have been relying primarily on the internal keyer for manual keying. This past Sunday, the internal keyer stopped sending dahs, i.e., stopped responding when I keyed dahs. As currently set up, my paddles are connected directly to the paddle jack on the back of the radio, using the default configuration with dits on the tip, and dahs on the ring, of the stereo plug. I have checked the wiring at the paddles and plug ends of my insulated cable, and confirmed that it is intact. So I believe the problem is inside the K3S. It could be as simple as a defective or dirty socket, or an open connection to the ring of the socket, which does not appear to be accessible without substantial disassembly of the radio. Or I am wondering if it might reflect some kind of software issue instead.

The internal CW memories have not been affected. The radio can still be keyed electronically via my logging software (N1MM+). And as, hopefully, a temporary work-around, I have wired a WinKey USB in parallel with my straight key and have successfully keyed the radio with that.

Please let me know if you have had this problem with your K3S (or K3), and if so, how you diagnosed and solved it?

Thanks and 73 -

Not to pick on Lou,  Richard or anyone else, but didn’t anyone save the boxes/packing material that the KPA1500 and other high value gear was shipped?  As a rule, I keep the boxes/packing materials that my high value equipment was shipped to me so that I would have the proper materials to return the item for repair, or ship the new owner if I was selling.  I don’t have a KPA-1500, but I do have all of the boxes for my K3-P3-KPA-500 and KAT-500 as well as my Flex gear (5000, 6700, PGXL).  I have in fact sent the K3 to Elecraft for upgrades, the 6700 to Flex for warranty work, the PGXL to Flex for warranty work, and when I had a Alpha 9500 it was shipped to RF Concepts for repair (lightning damage).

No need to have ‘professional packing’ when you had ‘right packing material’ shipped to you in the first place and you’ve already paid for it {e.g. "The packing material for the KPA1500 cost $5,995.00 and they threw in the amplifier for free"….  ;-)   }

Had a couple issues with my KPA1500 way back, and found it more economical to tear out the board in need of repair and send it back; rather than send back the whole amp and insure the shipping.  Since the board probably weighed less than a pound, I packed it myself; but I would not do that if I had to send back the amp.

If Elecraft doesn't need the whole amp to fix your problem, you might remove the board that is the problem, and send that back.  It will save you a buck or two.

Rich, K1DJ
