Hi Chuck..

I just seen your post…

Sorry if I repeat……..

It sounds like the SWR circuit is trying to Shut down the Output.

Inspect Everything on the Output of the Finals to the SO-239 Connector.

Change the Cable to your 50 Ohm Load.

Mike;
I had already done the gold pin replacement. The instructions said if the pins were hot and discolored to change the edge connector too. The short set of pins (the pins on the KPA3 were discolored, so I changed that edge connector. The pins on the main RF board weren't discolored, so I didn't change the longer edge connector. I thought maybe I should have, so this morning I changed the long edge connector, reassembled and checked it again. No difference.
I noticed if I set the power to about 35 watts, after a few seconds the power comes up, but oscilates a bit. I guess it's time to send Elecraft another email.

Thanks, Chuck

Start by unplugging the adapter while watching Device Manager.  The COM device that dissapears and reappears is the correct device, with its COM port noted.  Make sure no other software is open and using that port.

If still no luck, consider trying another USB to serial adapter in case that one was damaged.

Dave,

I am running Windows 10 Pro.  The latest Windows Update was a Quality Update, 7/24/2020.  The latest Driver Update was 4/16/2020.  The latest Definition Updates 7/24/2020 to 8/6/2020.  I believe that the Definition Updates were occurring at the time that the failure became known.  Google indicates that Definition Updates are related to Windows Defender.  I am using AVG anti-virus, but Windows Defender still appears to be running as a firewall.  I do not see how this would cause my problem, but I am open to suggestions.

Thanks,
Jan, KX2A

Chuck;

Assuming you have already attempted to remove and reseat all of the connectors without any changes, and assuming you still can't get the KPA3 to pass the TX gain calibration, you may win a chat with Elecraft support about a PA swap.

KPA3 output erratic

Still fighting a problem with my K3. When below 12 watts, every thing is fine. above 12 watts (where the KPA3 kicks in) most of the time it 0 watts, but about the same current you would expect for 100 watts. then after repeated tries, the power will come up and be stable. then the next time I press tune it is back to 0 watts. I notice if I press tune, or press the key in cw, the power is 0 for several seconds (long enough for me to send my callsign 3 or 4 times) and then the power comes back again. It will not pass TX gain calibration because the power does not rise immediately but takes several seconds. Any ideas?

I am certain that I have the correct COM port, but I have tested all of those listed in the K3 Utility (1, 3, 5, 9).
I just looked at the K3 Utility Help,and it indicates that the correct port, in Device Manager, should mention an FTDI chip.  The port that I think is the right one says it is a USB serial converter, manufacturer is FTDI.
I do not know where to go from here?  Can someone help?

Re: KPA500, Win4K3, and DDU

Randy,

Thanks for the reply.  I'm familiar with Win4K3's capabilities and have gone that route in the past.  I wanted something a little more comprehensive.  If I just wanted the temp of the amp I could set the LCD on the amp to report temp.  One wouldn't need Win4K3 for that.  Since I have Win4K3 and the DDU I would like to use both.  Looks like a DB9 manual switch may offer the most economical way to do this.  Again thanks for your thoughts.

Re: KPA500, Win4K3, and DDU

Win4K3 can communicate directly with the KAT500 and display several pertinent status measurements. You just need a the KXUSB-a USB to RS232 adapter (with the 3.5mm plug) for the KAT500. In the Win4K3 setup there's a specific window for this. The Win4K3 display set is not quite as comprehensive as the KV5VJ dedicated display, but it has most of the critical info. I use this all the time to keep track of the PA temperature of the amp when I'm operating in high duty cycle contest mode.
