KPA3 output erratic

Chuck Miller

Still fighting a problem with my K3. When below 12 watts, every thing is fine. above 12 watts (where the KPA3 kicks in) most of the time it 0 watts, but about the same current you would expect for 100 watts. then after repeated tries, the power will come up and be stable. then the next time I press tune it is back to 0 watts. I notice if I press tune, or press the key in cw, the power is 0 for several seconds (long enough for me to send my callsign 3 or 4 times) and then the power comes back again. It will not pass TX gain calibration because the power does not rise immediately but takes several seconds. Any ideas?

Randy,

Thanks for the reply.  I'm familiar with Win4K3's capabilities and have gone that route in the past.  I wanted something a little more comprehensive.  If I just wanted the temp of the amp I could set the LCD on the amp to report temp.  One wouldn't need Win4K3 for that.  Since I have Win4K3 and the DDU I would like to use both.  Looks like a DB9 manual switch may offer the most economical way to do this.  Again thanks for your thoughts.

Win4K3 can communicate directly with the KAT500 and display several pertinent status measurements. You just need a the KXUSB-a USB to RS232 adapter (with the 3.5mm plug) for the KAT500. In the Win4K3 setup there's a specific window for this. The Win4K3 display set is not quite as comprehensive as the KV5VJ dedicated display, but it has most of the critical info. I use this all the time to keep track of the PA temperature of the amp when I'm operating in high duty cycle contest mode.

Follow Up to my Problem Solved!
Thanks to those who replied with great solutions.
I solved my home TV and FM interference with a simple 1/4 wave stub tuned to 50.313 that I attached through a F-connector "T" adapter at the TV mast mounted amplifier and all is good in the Wilson household!
But I decided to go ahead with building a 6m low pass filter for the K3 output for when I get a 6m amplifier.  This mechanical beast is rated for full legal limit.  Designed by Bill Jones K8CU, QST Nov 2002, pp 34-38.

A tricky (and expensive! >$100 CDN  thanks to getting parts from USA to Canada) build to say the least, but fun.  I put the MFJ-259B analyzer on the input at 50.313 MHz and an 50 ohm standard on the output and adjusted the middle L3 coil spacing to get a 1.0:1 SWR at 50.313 MHz, so it is invisible to the K3 on FT8 and passed 100W through it with no interference on CBC FM 100.5 MHz or TV in the shack without a stub on the TV/FM antenna signal amp.
So now I expect that the neighbour's devices are protected as well.  The SWR dip minimum spans 50.010 to 51.0, so that should do nicely.

Thanks again for all the advice from this great group of Elecraft uses. I learned a lot on stub building!
I have enough Teflon to make 3 more of these filters if anyone is game.  Most expensive part for me.

I will not tear apart the K3 to replace the battery. Just too complicated and probably will not solve my problem. The problem is the oscillator.

Michael

is it a K3 or a K3S?

The best guide is the KRX3 installation manual, which has lots of pictures on installing the sub receiver module. There is one page that discusses removal of the main sub receiver module to get to the battery of the K3 clock, again the pictures leading up to that page are helpful.

if you have a K3S, it might be easier to remove the left ( as you are facing the FRONT panel of the radio). Although this assumes you do not have the internal 2 meter transverter installed .

Although it can appear to be daunting, with a little patience you can accomplish this.

You might consider sending a note to Elecraft support (Support@...) and it may be possible to get someone to walk you through it.

You can copy PDF copies of any manual from Elecraft.com

Hopefully this helps

Covered it previous post, the Time is derived from a 32 Khz clock crystal

And Osc ckt on the back of the Display board.  The Only Fix is to install

A Variable Cap to the Osc, as was Added to the K3S.

I recently posted about a slow clock - lost about 2 + minutes within days after setting it. I thought replacing the battery would be simple bordering on idiot proof. Apparently, not so thanks to someone at Elecraft burying the battery. I have the sub receiver and looks like accessing a $2 battery involves a major tear down. The manual makes it sound so simple; perhaps it is but ?
If anyone has replaced the battery, could you kinda detail what is involved. FWIW, my K3 was assembled at the factory. And where is a diagram of where the boards are located? Perhaps I missed that one in the manual. And please, no questions like "how old is the battery"?
