While a dummy load that measures +/- 10% or more of 50 ohms,  is still good to dissipate heat from RF, it may not be good enough for accurate power measurements.   Also, I am always concerned about "used" E-Bay or hamfest Bird slugs.   I find that a given slug will likely show different values when used in different meters.  Ideally, one should use only 1 meter and make sure the slug is calibrated for that meter.

How are you measuring power output?

I have set up three K3s now and have found the following:

- my measurement of power was all over the place until I calibrated my power meters with against a professional one - HP438: my Bird was 20% out, slug cal was off with a very noisy cal pot. All my various power meters of various ages were out to some degree. Better agreement now.

- Out of the box the K3s are set to deliver higher power than indicated, around 10-15%.

- power can be set right at  half power or full power (i.e. 5/50, or 10/100) but not both as the power measurement is not quite linear

- Low voltage limits power output, and dodgy power cables/ connectors can achieve this

Don’t know if this helps

Hi Robert…….. I would look for a bad Driver Fet Transistor

There are 3 Fets that are Heat sinked to the bottom of the radio.

Check your manual for the Correct location……

They are connected to the bottom plate for use as a Heat sink

Using Phillips head screws……..

Place the radio so it is raised up using the Front Bail.

Place your fingers on the 3 Screw that are holding the 3 Fets.

Key the PTT so the XT is on.   All 3 should get Warm, Not HOT

Or Cold.   Hot= Shorted, Cold Open,  Warm Operation normal.

I found one of my Fets was Cold……  Give it a try……… Ray WA6VAB

Rich, Thanks! Yes, this is a Mac, so things are a little different. My CONFIG:LIN OUT is set to nor 050. I can go up to 100 and it doesn't put a spec on the waterfall in fldigi. The settings for the CODEC in Preferences are full to the right.
I certainly appreciate the help!

Oops - skipped past the "Mac OS" in the title. There must be a Mac equivalent to the Windows sound card level adjustment - sorry, I don't know what it is, but it's provided by the operating system.

Jim,

I'm using Windows 10.  You can right click on the little speaker icon at the bottom right corner near the clock and pull to "open sound settings".    From there you can select the usb audio codec output device and change the volume level.  Same for the input device (how loud  the radio sounds to the computer -like mic gain) below that, but I think there's another menu to hit to get it.  It's basically a software control for the hardware in the rig.  Windows sees a serial port and a sound device over that USB connection.   I'm probably not doing this any justice with how I'm describing it so I apologize for that.   Windows itself (or rather, we humans) would typically use the sound device built into the computer for things like listening to music or watching youtube.   And because you have more than one device (the other being the radio's internal sound hardware), you can have that completely separated out so youtube doesn't go out over the air when your PTT is in use.

So far as I know, the only way to adjust this audio level setting is via the operating system's mixer settings, but for all I know there might be something in a menu somewhere on the radio.   Anyway, best of luck, and again I apologize for being terrible at explaining this stuff.

Hi Ray,
When you say "Check" what am I checking for? Like I said, it works fine with WSJT, but fldigi doesn't seem to be picking up the signal.

HI, OK, but when you say "check" what am I checking? What's the proper setting? Everything was at default and I haven't changed much, especially stuff I don't understand.

They currently sell new for $110 here:

They are in nearly like new shape except for a few scratches to the paint on the black steel cover (MFJ has never been famous for their paint jobs). I am asking $60 shipped USPS Priority Mail in the US. Paypal accepted and preferred. Please contact me off line (I am good on qrz.com).

To my knowledge, there has only ever been one VGA output option board for the P3.

Elecraft’s part designation is “P3SVGA”

My mistake and apparently quite a few others, is to refer to it a simply the “P3VGA” option.

This board and the literature state that it is in fact, a “P3SVGA”  board.

It has been sold.

Thanks for your interest.

Hi Charlie

Well, I'm a little confused here. I have a K3/P3 combo which doesn't have the monitor screen display and another  one which does.  The documentation for the one which does clearly identifies it as High Performance Panadapter P3SVGA Option, Rev D.  Did Elecraft initially support only a VGA monitor and then, more recently, a SVGA one?

Yes, it is the total package you receive if you ordered the VGA output option for the P3.

However, you are #3 on the list of potential buyers.
