This was a rough graph designed only to help new folks get a feel for the amp. I just put a link on the web page to the spread sheet in the text...

As you can see, it is a very rough dataset, not designed to show 1 db compression points.

Re dummy load.  First measure it with an ohm meter. It should measure 50 ohms  +/- 5% or better.  Then measure it with your antenna bridge from the lowest to highest frequency you intend to use.   An MFJ-259 or other known accurate bridge is suitable.  Make sure you use a known good, short length, low loss coax as a jumper.  The bridge should show 50 ohms and an SWR value of less than 1.2:1.  Higher values indicated some value of reactance.  A good dummy load will be resistive at all frequencies and show no reactance.  The R value is resistance and the reactance is the “j” part of the impedance.  Ideally it should be zero as measured on a VNA.  

I’ve found that both the air cooled loads and the “gallon of oil” types will change values as they heat.    Heat one with some RF and measure it again while hot.  If you find it to be different when hot than when cold, just be forewarned what you have to consider when making power measurements. 

It doesn’t take an expensive or precision load. It just takes knowledge and knowing what you are dealing with.

Roger that!  I've conversed with Bob on several occasions, and when I FINALLY get my station components as I intend them, I am FOR SURE going to ask him to work me up a dedicated box design to accommodate my shack.
ALL the other benefits aside... it REALLY cleans up the cabling mess behind the components.

I'm a cable nut....  I build my own for everything I can, so they will be as high a quality and custom fit to the application.  I really dig this product.

My station has gotten considerably more complex over the last few months and I was getting frustrated how to interconnect my K3s, P3, a SteppIR SDA 2000 controller (with key line interrupt), the KPA1500 and a Kenwood TS-590S (and the PC.)

I started communicating with Bob (N6TV) and gave him a list of my requirements and a short while later Bob sent me a very detailed diagram in color showing everything interconnected and even listed a macro for the KPA1500 to switch from the K3 to the TS-590 using the PF keys and menu settings for the various boxes. A bit later Bob revised the connectivity and that's what I used when adding in the box to my station.

That would normally be an adjustment to deal with an amp’s T/R switching time to prevent hot keying.  I set my TX delay to 15ms for my Acom and Alpha QSK amps.  The Alpha 89 has PIN diode T/R switching, and Alpha doesn’t recommend faster than 10ms.  I don’t know what Elecraft recommends for the KPA500 or KPA1500, as they are also solid-state T/R switching.  Other than the Alpha 87A, (and old 86), who has solid-state switching these days?   Rob, NC0B
