When I decided analog listening had value and kept my 75A4,

I stockpiled a set of tubes and capacitors.

During the subsequent half century, I’ve changed the power supply caps.

It’s fun to take an umbrella so it won’t rain.

Would a 2nd parts K3 might be just the ticket ?

Inexpensive insurance ?

That was my thinking in December about the car.

It being 20 years old, I went to Bring A Trailer and picked up a second.

Aren’t we blessed to even have these choices.

I wonder if somehow piston trimmers could be retrofitted, I know that piston trimmers are very stable, but aren’t cheap. Just a suggestion. I do not own a K1.

We will always be able to repair your ATU, Marsh.
In general, we can get parts for all of our products for repair purposes even if they're no longer offered for sale new. The one exception to that in recent years was the highly stable trimmer capacitors used in the 4-band module for the K1. The sole source for those dried up.

Clay,

Have you measured the voltage displayed by the K3S during transmit? A
low voltage is a common cause for Hi Curr.
Reduce the voltage drop in the power cord by running directly from the
power supply (no DC distribution boxes) and make certain all connections
are tight.

Re: [Elecraft] K3s throwing a "HIGH CURR" error after installing K144XV and Reference Phase Lock Option

Clay Autery

Update...

1) Strictly speaking, removing the RefLock option board and associated SINGLE TMP cable did not "fix" anything... Still have the "HIGH CUR" error.
2) Incidentally, IF you fire the K3s up on ANY other band (after disco and reconnecting power to clear error) WITH the KXUSB cable connected to the computer AND the K144XV "RS-232" port, and THEN switch from any other band TO 2 meters, the status light flashes once as expected (ready for firmware).  BUT, the K144XV Utility will NOT connect to the K144XV.  Then, of course, if you shut the K3s down while on 2M band and remove the KXUSB cable from its port, then power back up....

a) Powers up, status light flashes once or twice as expected.
b) the K3s shows ANT3 briefly, and then starts trying to display the power-on banner, but is interrupted repeatedly by the HIGH CUR error.... which remains after the banner scroll completes.
c) You have to power down, and disco/reconnect the power to reset.

I pulled the left side of the case off ans inspected the IF IN and IF out cables to verify that they are connected correctly AND still fully plugged, and had NOT been pinched off.

I think I will try again, with the ANT 3 cable disconnected to remove the BNC cable assembly as a possible cause....  I'm reaching here now.

Question:  Is there any chance that having the "grip" portion of ANY of the TMP connectors making contact with the K144XV enclosure a "problem"?  The ANT3 TNP board connector is set at a slightly OFF angle, and the TMP outer (coax shiield) might be touching the enclosure.  Just trying t figure out what is "wrong", and if it anything I have control over...

It is so unnecessary to get "butt hurt" over the natural product cycle.  Jut because some of the major assemblies may not be continually stocked on the K3, certainly does not mean that anyone is "abandoning" anyone.
Come on people.... that's simply unfair to say, and highly inaccurate.

Here's the status I got on December 30th:  (I'll bet it's changed a bunch since then.  NOTE: this is only a list of statuses on the parts I was ordering.)

  • KRX3A:  9 available as refurbished (reworked, not necessarily used).
  • KBPF3A: plenty of stock available for the foreseeable future
  • K144xv:  we have only a handful of these at this time.  Undetermined whether or not there will be another work order for purchase from vendor.
  • K144rflk:  we have approximately 10 in stock - most in refurbished
  • KFL3A-6K:  limited availability
  • KFL3a-2.8:  we have about 15 or 20 of these at this time.  If we did not have them available when you want them you could most likely buy them directly from our vendor (Vibroplex).
  • KFL3A-400:  this is probably one of the 2 most popular K3/K3S filters.  We do have a good number of these available at this time but they will probably go fast
  • SP3;  we have 25 of these available at this time.  Undetermined whether or not there will be another work order for purchase/build.
AFTER MY order....
  • I got the last KRX3A NIB, so maybe still the 9 re-worked (1 year factory warranty)
  • Got one of the KBPF3A, but they have plenty.
  • K144xv, I got one, so the handful they had is smaller.
  • K144rflk, I got one of the last new ones...  leas than 10 in stock, and you SHOULD have one of these with the K144xv
  • KFL3A-6K, I got another one...  more limited now.
  • KFL3a-2.8, I got TWO, They were the older INRAD brand 8-pole in Faraday cage, not the newer "Vibroplex"
  • KFL3A-400, I got one of these.... BUT it was NOT the INRAD 8-pole with a Faraday cage... It was the "new" Vibroplex part... only 6-pole and has an offset.  Elecraft support told me that my INRAD and Vibroplex filters will "play nice" because of the NEW synthesizers I have in my K3s...  Said to put the offset for JUST the sub-RX in ONLY the subRX field and "let the synthesizers do the heavy lifting."  THIS bothers me, and I may well drop yet another $170.00 on a matching Vibroplex part...  I don't know if I can stand having wildly different filters in the same position on the 2 receivers....  I think it will drive me nuts.
  • SP3, I got TWO...  They now have 23 or fewer.

Please this is not a fair assessment.  If we want Elecraft to be successful and appreciate the superior products, mainly made in US, then take a look at the reality of the other vendors in the HAM market.  Which other company has been customer service friendly, on line support, rig updates and flexibility.  The K3 is a great radio, and you can continue using it and get support.  Look at the K2.  What a remarkable radio and you can still get online support.  How old is it?  20+ years.  What other vendor has done this.  I think the criticsism is unduly harsh.  Flame on!

I suppse as for the “business model”, but for the rest of us it’s called an abandoment in some way.  However I’ll stick with the K3/K3s as long as the parts are available, then move on to something else, Icom perhaps.

The K3 radio is 10 years old and is a discontinued model.   The KX line is much newer and the K4 series is even newer.   I see this as a normal business model and activity.

Yep....  IF you want K3(s) parts, especially major assemblies, you'd best get them soon.

I got THE last NIB sub-RX on the shelf a week or so ago...  They DO have some factory refurbs available...

K4?  Not me.  If I wanted a rig with that same design Id by a 7610 for half the price.  For now, I’ll stick with the K3 of which I have two.

Hardly....  I cannot imagine the overhead required to support the entire K3s K-line an then also the New K4 (in all its permutations) and the KPA-1500, etc, etc...

The K3 has had a wonderfully successful run.  I've stuffed mine full of every option I can find, and look forward to several more decades of using it until I pass it on to one of my children.

Now to work on a strategy to create a "need" for a K4HD/KPA1500 combo....  <big smile>
