strange tone using FT8 on 80M
todd ruby
Hi all,
I have been playing around with FT8 on my K3, and it has been working fine on all the bands where I have transmitted, 17,20 and 40M. However, on 80M, instead of the pure tone as on the other bands I am getting the tone but also a hum/buzz unless I dial the power down to 20W. On all the other bands I hear the pure transmit tone regardless of the power setting from 50-700W with no problems. Any ideas what is up with 80? tnx es 73 todd WB2ZAB SN#339

K3/0 mic path question
Dennis Ashworth
I’m attempting to interface a CM500 headset to my K3/0 mini. The phones audio is no issue, but I can’t seem to get mic drive to the side panel mic jack. I’ve tried the various config options, Vox gain at 100, anti vox at 0, but no joy? Ideas?

RX ANT input reception issue
Petr Ourednik
Hi all,
I would like to ask kindly for ideas, tips or opinion please. Simply I have problem with RX ANT input reception. I lost reception from external Beverages on that input during last contest event > it worked well most of the time but Sunday evening I realized that noise from Beverages is going down, some time later I realized that even sigs lower and lower and finally after some time (15-20min) I realized that I am deaf from RX ANT input. When I switched to receive back from ANT1 main all looked ok with receiver sensitivity etc. It happened not instantly but gradually! When I disconnected BNC from KXV3 board on read panel of K3 and put it back it received instantly OK. So my first though was > well I have bad contact on the coaxial cable/BNC. Unfortunately when I switched RX ANT input OFF then ON I lost sigs immediately again. I tried to shaking with BNC on rear panel and randomly I got it back to work but when switched on front panel the RX ANT again I lost reception from external Beverages again. So something is wrong in my K3 and have no idea what to do at this moment BUT... ... it can be also linked to the "Phenomenon" from the Sunday earlier morning. I noticed in the morning that during transmitting I had strong audio feedback into QSK which sounded to me at first like short echo from myself > propagation Phenomenon. I made short vid here: https://youtu.be/cV3rzlsZbA4 When I talked to other people they routed my mind to idea that it can be linked to RX ANT issue then after in the evening... I am using always Front-end antenna Saver circuit which is grounding receiver input on RX ANT port when TXing by fast relays (0.5ms) and I used only K3 at 100W out without any power amplifier! So I do not believe/hope that I damaged it by TXing to Inverted V antenna by induced energy back thru Beverages... See the FES circuit used here: http://ok1rp.blogspot.com/2015/03/front-end-saver-for-lb-antennas.html I will be happy to get some idea, advise or hint what I should check and replace or how I could solve it. 73 - Petr, OK1RP

Thanks guys, guess it's normal...
I thought about trying to solder the shell to the wire on the back side, but I doubt that the solder would stick. I'll just leave it alone. Mike, W0IH

After removing the little metal cap, I checked, mine is the same way, the pins are hard bound, the ring is loose.

Ed, The 8 pins within the connector are tight; the part with some "play" is just the ring with the threads on it. Dick, K8ZTT

Mine is also loose. I haven't opened it up, but I figured that the connector was just soldered to the board and not fastened to the front panel. It seems that most electronic items are constructed that way these days. In other words, "they don't make 'em like they used to"

I had a similar experience - not with a K3 but with an MFJ voice keyer which uses the same type of connector..all my attempts to tighten it enough to stabilise it failed. Once I realised it wasn't all going to disintegrate, I learnt to live with it - but it is a tad odd! 73, Quin G3WRR

Well, I just checked my K3s, and be damned it is not loose too. I have never used it (I use the rear panel one), so it has been that way from the get-go. I also have a K3 (was replaced by the K3s when it was released) that I retired to my ARES go-kit, and use for FD every year (CW only). My guess, is the case being "loose" is normal, normal.
