K3 & USB

Well, here's what i finally di and it seems to work just fine, so far!

In my logbook, LOG4OM, i went to the headphone icon which is where you
find the "CAT" settings.

Rig 1: Elecraft K3

Post: COM 19

Baud Rate: 38,400

Data 8,N,1

RTS & DTR show : High

Since the situation is working, i left that alone.  If it works, don't
fix it.

In WSJT-X i went to: File, Settings and selected the Radio tab.

I made the rig = None and closed the settings page down.  Nothing else.
Left whatever settings were as they were.

Rebooted the computer and everything started working as it should.  My
"CAT" light in the logging program turned green and when i made  a
contact on FT8, it went right to the log.

One thing, K4TAX has said that you should see no more than 4 bars of
ALC, If i try to drop the input level down below that the transmitter
drops out.  Have not tried opening up the VOX setting a bit to see if i
can compensate a little of if that will not make any difference at all.

I suspect that i wasted a lot of effort trying to make something work
that wasn't needed.  The different settings in the LOG4OM and WSJT-X are
apparently for some other type of operation/condition but with the
Elecraft K3, it was almost a Plug & Play.

I hope this info helps other who have ran into a similar problem.

Treat the K3S as if it is a K3.  Use the Elecraft supplied E980297

configure all of your other hardware ans software *exactly* like

Also before i was able to use TX Data mode, set for Data A which btw in

At least it works on CW and SSB. Kudos to the Elecraft crew for such a

Q&A: P3 Panadapter. What Settings to monitor VFO-B Frequency only, on the P3

Mark W2OR

What settings are needed to enable the P3 to monitor the VFO-B frequency (example below), while VFO-A (Rx and Tx) are roughly 250-kHz up the band?

Example:  Operating VFO-A for FT8 Rx and Tx on 6 Meters at 50.313, and with no need for P3 display of VFO-A, while requiring the P3 to monitor 6 Meter CW at 50.110, plus 6m SSB at 50.125.

Thanks.

International orders received by the deadline will qualify for discounted International USPS shipping (discounted by same dollar amount as equivalent domestic Priority Mail shipping).

The S-BOX and S-BOX-USB are passive serial port splitters that make it easy to connect multiple devices to any compatible transceiver with a serial port.  When connected through the S-BOX, every device can follow the transceiver frequency, automatically changing bands and/or retuning.  "Devices" include:
  1. Elecraft KPA500, KPA1500 amplifiers
  2. ACOM 2000A (with new RCU), 600S, and A1200S amplifiers
  3. SPE Expert amplifiers (all models)
  4. Elecraft KAT500 Tuner
  5. SteppIR SDA 100 and SDA 2000 antenna controllers
  6. Elecraft KRC2 band decoder
  7. Array Solutions RatMaster band decoder
  8. Hamation SM-8 ShackMaster band decoder
  9. 4O3A Interface Genius band decoder
  10. RFSpace SDR-IQ receiver
The S-BOX also includes four independent keying circuits to provide CW, FSK, and PTT to a transceiver via logging software.  A keying circuit can also be used to remotely power up an Elecraft K3, K3S, KPA500, or KPA1500 using RemoteHams RCForb.

The Y-BOX looks similar, but it is not the same as the S-BOX.  The main purpose of the Y-BOX is to eliminate a tangle of 15-pin Y-Cable connections when you have multiple devices that all need to connect to the K3/K3S 15-pin ACC port, including:
  1. KAT500 / KPA500 / KPA1500 AUX cable
  2. Top Ten Band Decoder
  3. FSK keying interface
  4. SO2R box
  5. Remote Rig Interface
The Y-BOX can replace the KPAK3AUX cable kit.  Using the Y-BOX instead of the cable, a K3 macro can power a KPA500 or KPA1500 on or off (this does not work an unmodified KPAK3AUX cable).  The Y-BOX also provides a very convenient way to connect the SteppIR Tuning Relay Interrupt option, which prevents damage to a SteppIR antenna from excessive power while it is tuning.

Thanks, and Happy Labor Day!

Re: Messaged on K3: Turn on KAT500

Bob McGraw - K4TAX

It would seem that the K3 should be turned on first and power from the K3 is supplied to the KAT500 from the K3 at the same time.  The KPA500 is turned on last.   At least that is the way I power up the station.   Works correct every time for me.

From the manual "Apply power to the KAT500 before or at the same time you turn on the K3."

[Elecraft] Powering PR6-10 and P3 w/SVGA Option From K3 12V DC Outlet

Ian Kahn

Good morning, Elecrafters!

I have an older-model K3 (s/n 281) and an older-model P3 (s/n 681) with the P3SVGA option. My K3 has the 1A mod for the 12VDC outlet on the back panel. In and effort to reduce cable clutter, I would like to power both my P3 and PR6-10 from that outlet, simultaneously. I currently use it for just the preamp, and my P3 is powered from my RigRunner and power supply. Based on the power consumption listed in the relevant manuals (.7A for the P3, .070A for the PR6-10, .77A total, if my math is correct), this should be doable with the right cabling. Has anyone on the list done this successfully? If so, would you be willing to share your cabling design with the rest of us? If nobody has done this before, maybe the Elecraft geniuses either have a suggestion, or could put such a cable  set in the design pipeline?

Thanks and 73,

Re: No USB Audio Codec

Brian KF6C

I had another problem with the K3s in that it was unable to key the KPA500 using the AUX cable. I have had to use the RCA key line for a while. I could see no connection between the two issues but decided to investigate this problem as it could also have been related to KIO3B board.

The Keying problem turned out to be R9 on the KIO3B board which is simply a resistor in series with pin 10 of the AUX connector. As the Speaker IO problem was there with and without the AUX connector plugged in I see no reason this would affect the issue.

However on reassembling the radio the speaker USB IO was now present on the WSJT F2 menu.  I have no idea what corrected the problem but it now works fine.

I had checked the LIN_SW circuitry while the KOI3B board was accessible and seen no problems.

Hi Hank
I have a K3 modified to the S model, but with no USB sound card, because I have a MicroKeyer II here, which does all digital modes.
2m is realized with DB6NT transverter, behind is a Expert 1K for HF and BEKO PAs for VHF.
Before I have Kenwood 950 SDX (that was near on the K3, as also the TS-850). A FT-2000 with AC0C modifacation was also before the K3.
My K3 happend by chance, because a friend sold one.
The receiving difference is amazing, but the main argument for the K3 was he is a light weight and he is made by active HAMS, so the functions and knobs are very thoughtful. Once a clever setup has done, you have not do do much menu changes for all modes, in digital modes (I use also DXLAB and WSJT-X) all changed, which are needed are done by the programms.
Besides I have a 7300, which is a good radio for RX/TX, but all the ICOM radios have this touch sensitve TFT/LED display.
I dont like it at all, remember at the first 756, a display for exchange is hard to find. Even a TS-990 has such a display but there are nor longterm experiences, how they work in a couple of years.
I have no good experiences with spare parts for the TS950, so I sold it.
And there must be many reasons for DX Peditions, why they use K3(S).
Summerized my decision for the K3 are
Small form factor which very good parts inside :-)
thoughtful handling
no big displays and spare parts avialibility after years
many connectors at the backside

And for SSB good sound, you dont need any Heil W2IHY etc. (all sold) only a KOSS SB45 or YAmaha CM100 for outstanding TX sound (cost 30 $)
Its a long keeper for me

Besides just now my K3 was and is on air for the European VHF championship at OE1W

Then within  the WSJT-X F2 menu, audio tab, expand the lines using the down arrow at the end of the line.   Do this both for INPUT and OUTPUT.    There may be other choices which when expanded show the CODEC.  Depends on how the sound card in the computer is configured.

Also be sure you have the correct radio selected under the Radio tab.

The Signalink and KX3 are totally different animals.
