My operating position consists primarily of an Icom IC-7600.  I have used it for several years and really like the user interface.  BUT, its performance in the presence of strong signals - especially adjacent signals is poor in my opinion.

I saw (and heard) a demonstration of a K3s in a very strong adjacent signal environment and the adjacent signal was completely rejected - no interference at all.  I am seriously considering replacing my 7600 with a K3s (like buying American too!) but am overwhelmed at the number of options available.

I have enjoyed just about any operating style and radio configuration available (except having a "real" dual receive) with the 7600.  My other accessories that I will use with a new radio include: AL-1200 amplifier, PK-232sc+ (soundcard, HF packet, FSK RTTY, and a little PACTOR), PC running DXLabs, and a Heil Proset.  I operate primarily SSB with some digital.  With digital, I send a fair amount of RTTY (really like the sound of FSK RTTY with the PK-232sc+).  I'm trying to get back into CW - never learned much past 5WPM and I struggle with that today.  I also do a little 2m SSB, but my old Drake 2m SSB rig (running a Henry 2m amplifier) lacks some function and I would like to add that to a station rig.  I use a couple of beverage antennas for listening and a dipole and a few beams for transmitting.  I don't want to go backwards or have to give up any flexibility.  The newer 7610 seemed like the next rig for me, but the strong signal issue remains.  I have never really looked at a K3 - seemed liked an expensive little box with not very many bells and whistles, but after hearing one, I may be wrong.

Convince me to switch!!

KIO3B.   For very weak-signal data modes, the choice of sound cards, along with their various specs, becomes a very important element in the decode chain.  It will be interesting to see what the full specs are, for the card on the KIO3B main board.

My Old K3 is in for repair and upgrade.  I'm replacing the K3io board
with the new "B" model.  Apparently from what i read i will no longer
need the line in and line out cables.  Am i reading that correctly?  It
will then use a regular USB cable from the radio as a replacement as i
understand it.  Is there a new firmware release that will address this
or is the latest that has been published going to work?  I'm wondering
what different settings will have to be changed.  I use it mainly on CW
& FT8 modes.

Re: K3 upgrade

You won't have to use the old line in and line out cables, but you can continue to do so if you wish. If you do choose to remove those two cables and use the USB audio codec in the KIO3B instead, then in your digital mode software you will have to change the sound card settings to use the K3's USB audio codec instead of whatever sound card you were using before, for both transmit and receive.

You will also want to use that same USB connection for an unrelated function, namely radio control from your software. You can do away with any serial cable, KUSB or whatever else you might have been using for radio control, and instead use the virtual serial port that is set up by the driver for the K3's new USB adapter. In the K3's CONFIG menu, change the CONFIG:RS232 setting to USB to enable the USB serial adapter. You will need to change the COM port number in your software to match whatever COM port number Windows assigns to the new port (which you can find with the help of the Windows Device Manager).

The K3S Owner's manual (page 18) contains more information on using the KIO3B's USB port.

Larry,

It depends.  I still use the line out to be send audio to the US Interface Navigator (FSK for keying RTTY).

U also use the USB for FT8.

I just modified mine with the new synthesizer, KI03B, DVR, and TXCO and now looks and acts like my K3S's. Yep just use the USB for all of your digital modes. Makes thigs a lot simpler. If the factory is doing your mods it will be up to snuff and don't need to worry about that. Your settings for FT8 etc. shouldn't be too far off from what they are. I did all of mine myself and glad I did. I Use it primarily for Field Day but I wanted it to be the same as my other two K3S's.

On getting ready to install the unit, it mentions the rectangular pad to be installed under the Xtal module.  No pictures to show that and the only thing in the package was a black thick rectangular block.  It is not what I would call a "pad".  What am I missing?  Thanks.
