Re: 8877 Help pse

Mal, this one is a HB on 6m.  I had a weekend Flash-Bang event. I blew the HV fuse (small 10 ohm resistor in series in the HV line). Now after repair of that the grid draws abt 10 ma. without any drive.  With drive, slowly easing up to 50 watts I still get my 1500 watts out but the grid current is way high, near 100 ma.  Some have suggested a mechanical grid short?  Any ideas or advice?

Is there anyone out there that has 8877 amplifier experience that would be willing to answer some technical questions via email? Tnx for the consideration. The amplifier IS driving the 8877 just so I’m not off topic.........

Re: K3 with K Pod and the REV button

Thanks to everyone who responded. It's too bad it can't be done. In a Dx pileup with a P3 you can see which frequency the Dx station is responding to. Trouble is some operators call out of sequence constantly, and without hearing them, you can't use the P3. I have the A/B button on the KPod, and it works well, except if you forget to push it in the second time, you transmit on top of the DX station, resulting in a citation from the DX police!
It looks like the only cure for this is getting the expensive second receiver- which may have been Elecrafts intention of not allowing the Rev on the K pod.

Ref email from Jim MM0BQI

Hi Jim:  In addition to the +12V mod mentioned below at about the time your K3 was produced there was a mod to change the gain to provide a slight increase in the IF output level being sent to the P3.  I had to do it to one of my K3s - only  one resistor on the bottom of the main rf board if I remember correctly.  Reference to the Elecraft mod archives will provide the details and allow you to determine if its already been done to your K3 or what to do if not.

The P3 is a great addition to your station and will change forever how you “see” the stations you want to work.

There was a mod to increase the aux 12volt output of the K3 from 500ma to 1a back in 2012 if you use the SVGA board option with the P3 and power it from that aux output. You could probably email Elecraft support to see if it affects your serial number. Otherwise you should be good to go.

Okay, I can understand that on some levels. Being out here on the far distant spiral arm of the known universe that is Thailand sending anything anywhere is pretty much a not happening event. Fixing it urself is where its at. I just fixed an Icom IC-775 DSP, lovely radio that had sat for several years because the owner was convinced it was dead and worthless. Well a few minutes of logical approach and testing soon showed it was of all things, the mains input integrated noise filter, both line and neutral were open circuit. A simple fix and a dead radio lives again. Sometimes they are just that easy.

One of the great things about Elecraft, as was with Ten Tec way back, the support and help is second to none, so sending anything anywhere is usually either not necessary or it's just a module. With Elecraft I've never had a failure, least not one caused other than by me. Reliability is so high its hardly a consideration.

If the scope requires service, I won’t have to send in the whole radio, that is an advantage in my view, same goes for power supply. If the PS goes poop, I just go to my basement shop and get another 12 v supply. Having all intigrated into one box like the 7800 for example is a distinct disadvantage. Imagine having to ship the 7800 back to Icom for a PS or scope problem.

As a further point of interest you will I'm sure be impressed. The P3 is pretty awesome as far as panadaptors go. I have an Icom IC-7600 on the desk here at the moment for a repair. It is a beautiful radio, lovely feel, plays really nice, great ergonomics and build quality, nice radio though I know it's let down by some performance issues, not that they would figure too much in my own situation but more than that, the spectrum scope, absolutely awful relative to a P3. It really has raised the bar.

Now if only it were integrated :)

There is a possible need to modify the 12v out on the K3 if you want to run anything else from that outlet at the same time but since I do not I have left it original.

I have 'found' an unopened P3 kit that I purchased back in 2010.
Can I build the P3 and upgrade the firmware to current level or are there any hardware changes I need to make to the P3/K3?
Thanks and 73
