New release of Win4K3Suite

tomb18@...

Hello,

There is a new release of Win4K3Suite.  This release corrects an error with a missing DLL when a SDRPlay RSP1A is used and improves the RIT/XIT function.

One of the useful features of Win4K3Suite is that it interfaces to all 3rd party logging and digital mode programs such as HRDLogbook, DX Keeper, NAP3, N3FJP, N1MM+, FLDigi, MIXW as well as hardware devices such as the K3/0, the Pig Knob and various antenna tuners and amps.  In order to understand how to do this, there is a video on youtube that gives clear instructions on using the virtual port management facilities of Win4K3Suite:  You can access it at

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jh6IS0S1dE&t=4s

In case you are not aware, Win4K3Suite is a comprehensive control program for the Elecraft K3, K3S, KX3 and KX2.  It supports all hardware such as the KPA500, KPA1500 and KAT500 even on the KX2.

Win4K3Suite has built in panadapter support for the P3, LPPAN and the SDRPlay RSP. There is no configuration necessary to support all modes and filter settings for QSY's.

You can read user reviews here:

https://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/11214

There is a fully functional 30 day trial available at va2fsq.com

Emulating the K2 noise blanker in a K3

m michael z

The NB in my K2 handles my noisy location better than the K3 does. Any ideas on setting up the K3's NB to work like the K2's? I read Don's and some other's papers on NB set up, but still haven't come close.
The K3 is always noisy, with the ATT on (no preamp), it drops a little. The K2 is quiet but, if the noise level rises the NB takes care of it.

The control is also touchy with loud bursts of audio when set in the minimum position. As the volume passes the rough spot it settles down to a comfortable level and works normally after 11:00 o’clock position.. The second receiver operates normally.

I believe i puchesed the radio in October of 2017. Please advise on next steps.

Evening Bill

If you want full range, then you are right to stick with what you've got.

Interesting and the only response I received. I have decided to stay with the Behringer speakers. I enjoy their fullness and believe that would be missing.
Thank you.

Bill -- good morning

I've recently purchased an SP3.

In terms of frequency response, I would say it is 'Optimised for Communications'

You won't be happy if you want to play Classical music though it -- and its got no real 'Bass' response so forget about playing 'Rock' :-)

It does what it was designed to do -- optimise the communications audio frequencies.

I'm happy with my purchase and it enhances the K3 (and K3S) listening experience.

(PS I also own a Recording Studio, so I'm very used to listening to 'Monitor' type Speakers.)

Elecraft mailman system not working?

w2blc@...

I find I am suddenly unable to post to the Elecraft mailman system. I am using the email address I normally use (with posting success just a few days ago).

In exploring the problem, I see that not all postings appearing on:
http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/elecraft/2018-February/............
later appear on:
https://www.mail-archive.com/elecraft@.../maillist.html

I was under the impression these system were linked. Guess not. Anyone willing to take a stab about explaining what is happening? I sure do not understand it.

SP-3 frequency range question

w2blc@...

In the real world, does the SP-3 exhibit well rounded frequency response? Or, is the response more directed for "communications use"? How is it for listening to AM broadcast? How does it do with the famous K3 hiss? How does it do with a less capable receiver (one without an EQ)?

I am considering some station simplification, hence the SP-3. Currently, I am using the Behringer MS40 pair. Super sound, but quite large and do have an internal amp (I have experienced no RF problems).

I’m still having the issue with the rampup on 28Mhz.  I guess I will be doing the same thing.

I recently had slow power ramp up behavior, most pronounced above 14 MHz and especially so on 28 MHz. Elecraft replaced several components on the LPA (though the LPA power MOSFETs were fine). They also removed/bypassed a bandstop filter that's centered up around 10 meters. They told me that bandstop filter sometimes has components that go bad and that filter is no longer deployed in the K3S and can be removed. Guess it's the K3 residual appendix. My K3 got an appendectomy and feels much better now. I couldn't find the bandstop filter in the Manual's block diagram so it's still a bit of a mystery to me. I suspect it might be an 11 meter bandstop filter. Not sure but whatever they did sure fixed it.

I had the exact same issue the last two days except on 10 and 15.  Recalibrate worked though I still have the Power keeps rising issue.  Seems to be ok as long as I keep output set at 98W or so.

I have the low output on 160 and 80, as well as upward “power creep” after I change power levels or bands. I’ve tried the TX gain calibration, but it didn’t help.

I’m sending mine in under warranty after the Bouvet DXpedition.

I have correct output on all bands except 160 meters.

I assume I should run the 50 TX gain procedure on page 53 of manual?

Will I need to do this for all bands?

Re: K3s VFO lock question

ve3ki

The lock is independent of which VFO you are using for TX and RX. All you have to do to do what you want is put the DX frequency in VFO B, turn the subRX on, put the TX frequency in VFO A, and do NOT turn Split on. Whether you lock the VFO B knob or not is incidental to this setup; you only need to lock the VFO B knob if you are in danger of touching it accidentally.

The Split indicator in a dual RX K3 is misleading. It does not necessarily mean you are operating split; it just means the TX is on VFO B. If you want to operate split with the TX on VFO A, just turn Split off and listen to the DX in your subRX (right ear).

Rich many thanks but that seems to give me the "normal" locked B for TX with the RX tuned on A.  I do it a slightly different way but achieve the same thing for use when running.

I'm looking to do the exact opposite i.e. a fixed (locked) RX frequency on B and variable TX frequency on A (the large knob). This so I can listen to the DX on a locked RX frequency and move the TX vfo quickly and precisely with A while viewing the P3 display.

I use mini Bose. Two HAM guests were amazed at the quality of diversity sound.

I use a pair of SP3 speakers with my home K3S. If you use Elecraft's AFX feature (main receiver alone) or if you’re using both main and sub receivers at the same time, you’ll be amazed, like me, at how expansive the stereo audio space “feels" with speakers this good. It can reduce operating fatigue, help with diversity reception, and take full advantage of broadcast-quality signals.

To make sure we got the SP3’s acoustics right, we collaborated with an expert in the field--literally a professor of audio physics. He helped us select the speaker, specify the cabinet materials, and ensure there were no oddities anywhere in the frequency range. The cabinet is rock-solid, using overlapping segments to eliminate all edge-to-edge joinery. You could just about park a truck on one (well, OK, a small import).

Several SP3 owners have posted comments here:

   http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/13281

...so you don’t have to take my word for it.

In addition to its great sound, the SP3 includes a front-panel switch for selecting between two mono or stereo audio sources, e.g. two transceivers.

The squelch inhibits receive audio completely as currently implemented.  This includes line out, whether analog or USB.
