Re: USB codec not working

ROBERT NELSON

Still having the Codec quit. Tonight I was listening to JT65 on 160m. Codec working. Switched to listening to 80CW. After a few minutes I noticed the Codec had stopped working. THe USB serial port for rig control remains working. Tried unplugging and plugging the USB cable. No help. I have uninstall the Codec using device manager and reboot. Then it starts working.

P3 Macros

I'm trying to add some macros to my P3.  I'm able to use the keyboard and compose them, but I'm stuck with labeling them.  Is it possible to have my personalized macro label appear in the P3 window?  I've probably flubbed something.  I'm seeing "Macro 1", "Macro 2", etc.  I'd like to have my label so I know quickly which button to tap/hold if that's possible.  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Remote Power On/Off (pg 44 in K3 manual)

A remote-control system can pull the POWER ON
line to ground (ACC connector, pg. 18) to turn the
K3 ON. To turn it OFF, the controller must send
the K3 a “PS0;” remote-control command via the
RS232 interface, wait at least 100 ms, then
deactivate the POWER ON signal. This sequence
ensures that nonvolatile memory is updated
correctly before shut-down.

I got an email from VA2FSQ (WIN4K3 designer) with his suggestions.

Maybe the problem is solved - A usb controlled controlled relay to pull ACC pin 8 to
ground. This one even comes with its own sofrware that will leave an icon on the desktop:

I ordered this today, maybe it is the last step!

It would be kinda neat if Win4k3 could toggle an RS232 (or other) pin that could then be used, say via a transistor driver or W.H.Y. to turn the power on. Could be on the setup screen that it pulls up when a radio cannot be found.

I use Win4K3Suite for rig control and it has the ability to shutdown the K3 remotely.  It will not however turn it back on.  There is no way in a CAT command to turn the radio on.  You need to pull pin 8 on the KI03 connector low. You could use a transistor switch or a small relay, but you would also need a user interface of some time to provide the logic signal.

I use W0JEC's Remote Station Antenna Control application, which was in QST, to remotely switch antennas and it also provides the ability to turn on/off other devices. I use this to remotely turn 12V on/off to my MFJ 998 autotuner.  I elected to not do this with the K3.

Instead I run my K3 off of a deep cycle battery with a batter conditioner.  I leave the K3 on all the time.

I use RemoteHams.com. Elecraft recommends it.

A related question is:

Which of the commercially available K3 rig control programs out there will turn the K3 off/on remotely? I am at the point in setting up my station for remote control that this is all that is left to do.

I misspoke. It should be pin 8 on the 15 pin (ACC) cable.

If you short and release  pin 6 to ground on the 15 pin cable on the K3. It will toggle the on/off state of the K3. Usually, this is done by hooking up one side RTS on the com cable connecting the K3 to the computer. Make sure the RTS is set to be always off.

Bad idea, sorry.

The RS-232 spec is + AND - voltages.  Unless you KNOW it's diode and limit protected, you risk K3 damage if applying say -16V (within the spec).  The floating + voltage may also exceed the circuit limits.  The standard is loose and often -+5v is used, or +5 v.

RTS is used by many pieces of ham software too, for CW or PTT keying.  One should  leave that alone, it's asking for problems.

It's best to put in a small transistor, filter cap (bypass) and limiting resistor circuit or a relay or an opto-isolator.  ONLY go to ground, for a moment.  It should be trigger-able without rebooting say, the power supply.

The line only needs to be held at ground for a moment (I didn't time it, but a mere flick of the wire powered up the K3, call it 50 ms?).  It shouldn't be held at ground all the time as that can affect the operations.

Re: [Elecraft_K3] K3 remote power ON/OFF

David G3YYD <g3yyd@...>

I notice that the power on the ACC requires according to the manual a ground on this line. So long as you are not worried about leaving the K3 on the whole time just  use a RC network from the 13.8v supply that then keys on a FET switch to pull the power on line to ground. Make sure the RC network has a reasonable delay time probably make it a few seconds before the FET switches.

Better idea to divide the PSU voltage with a series R and a R to ground first then apply the tap to the RC timing network. Thus the voltage applied to the FET gate can be set to be within the FET Vg rating.

My entire K line is managed by a computer.  I use a USB board with a pair of relays (only need one) and some specific software (shortcut on the desktop) to tickle the ACC line to turn the K3 on when I am remote operating.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5v-usb-relay-2-channel-programmable-computer-control-for-smart-home-new-s3-/121792206668?hash=item1c5b61974c:g:rY8AAOSwYHxWJT7L is one example.

The software is at:

And naturally since I put this together, I've not had a power failure.

Despite of having 7AH battery as a PS buffer, sometimes when the electricity is off for a long time, K3 is switched OFF.

Is there an easy way to remotely switch K3 on and OFF through the serial port? Does a software exists that is dealing with this.

I was trying to find the K3 menu item that will enable switching K3 back ON when electricity is restored (like in all computer motherboards) but could not.
Would appreciate the assistance.

One more comment related to this:

There is a fellow in Iowa who uses his metal roof for his antenna.  I have worked him several times on 160 and he has had no lack of signal in the group.

As I understand it, he runs two conductor electrical zip cord with both wires twisted together as a single wire, for the feedline from his tuner to the edge of the roof.  He has a 100 foot ground wire out to the pipes on his dock in a lake.

Just a note;  last night, with a wire from my loop hanging over my quarter wave inverted-L for 160, I worked a guy 18 miles from Niagara Falls on 160.  I live in western Minnesota.  I am only using ground rods at the feed point for a counter-poise so far.

Data modes with K3/mini and RemoteRig

Scott Townley

What's the best way to run data modes (mostly thinking RTTY) with a K3/mini and RR setup?

While I am quite satisfied with my RR performance, one thing you give up is the CW-to-Data capability, because that functionality is only via the K3 internal keyer.

Or, has anyone figured out a workaround that would permit CW-to-Data over the RR?

Thx,
