To load beta firmware on to your P3/SVGA:
1) Create a temporary folder.
2) Download the beta firmware from:
ftp://ftp.elecraft.com/P3/firmware/beta/P3_0157_SVGA_0131_BETA.zip
3) Extract the contents of the zip file into the temporary folder.
4) With your P3 connected via serial cable, start P3 Utility and select the
Firmware Tab
5) Click on Browse and select the temporary folder that holds the extracted
files.
6) Click on "Send all new firmware to P3"

Release notes:

MCU 01.57 / 2-2-2016

Version 01.57 requires SVGA firmware 01.31 to support all SVGA features.

* P3 commands in keyboard macros: Added support to allow P3 commands to be
embedded in SVGA keyboard macros. When entering a keyboard macro using a
USB keyboard attached to the P3/SVGA, P3 commands can now be intermixed with
K3 commands by preceding the command with the ‘#’ character. Example: set
up a macro to set the K3 to PSK31, frequency 14.070, P3 span of 100 kHz,
fixed tune enabled:
FA00014070000;MD6;DT3;#SPN001000;#FXT1;

* SVGA keyboard macros as function keys: The first 8 SVGA keyboard macros
can now be executed from the 8 front panel function keys. First, using a
keyboard, program the macro and make sure to save it into one of the first 8
locations (mem 1 – 8). Then on the P3, press the MENU button and using the
encoder, select the SVGA menu and press the encoder to enter. Then using the
encoder, choose “Macro 1” through “Macro 8”, then press the function key
(short tap or long hold) to map the macro to the function key.

* Enable/disable TX sensing at the TxMon coupler: Added TxSensEn to TxMon
sub-menu. This allows enabling/disabling of transmit sensing at the
coupler. For K3 and K3S users, TxSensEn can be set to “disabled”, which
will use the serial connection from the K3 to determine the TX state.
Setting TxSensEn to “enabled” will use forward power sensed at the TxMon
coupler to determine TX state (useful for non-Elecraft radios).

* K3S attenuator support: The P3 now properly scales the display when the
four-step attenuator in the K3S is enabled.

* SWR meter blanked: Both the analog and digital SWR displays are now
blanked whenever the transmit power is too low to give a valid reading.

* Serial #DSM command: The Display Mode (#DSM) command now controls the
Transmit Monitor's power/SWR meter display as well as enabling and disabling
the waterfall window. #DSM0 = Spectrum display only, #DSM1 = Spectrum +
waterfall, #DSM2 = Spectrum + meters, #DSM3 = Spectrum + waterfall + meters.

* New #FON command: The display font can now be selected via a serial
command. #FON0 = 5 x 7 pixels, #FON1 = 7 x 11 pixels, #FON2 = 9 x 14
pixels.

* New #XCV command: The transceiver type can now be selected via a serial
command. #XCV00 = "K3", #XCV01 = User-defined, #XCV03 = 455 kHz IF, etc.
The command uses the same number order as in the "Xcvr Sel" menu item.

* Transceiver definition bug fix - Exiting: When exiting the "Xcvr Def"
menu page, if the user-defined transceiver is already selected, it will
reflect the new values inmmediately, rather than having to re-select it.

* Transceiver definition bug fix - IF Invert: The USER transceiver that is
defined in the "Xcvr Def" menu item may now specify "Not inverted" IF tuning
even if the "K3" control language is selected.

* SVGA resolution / main waterfall bug fix: The main waterfall height had
been switching to the default value after changing SVGA resolution.

* VFO B cursor = VFO DATA A bug: The VFO B cursor had been matching the VFO
A cursor in DATA A mode, even when VFO B was in a different mode.

P3SVGA 01.31 / 2-3-2016

* SVGA Keyboard
Added support to allow P3 commands to be embedded in SVGA keyboard macros.
Added support so P3 can execute keyboard macros from front panel function
keys.
Keyboard / USB thumbdrive can be used when not in data display mode.
Cleaned up the text message sending, and use of the IM character ‘|’ for
better
handling of short text messages.

I tuned the KAT-500 every 20Khz on 20 meters and all works well, mostly.   Occasionally when I hit the PTT the relays chatter because the tuning resolution is lost, on a freq that I use regularly.

Today is a bright, sunny day.   I used the ant this morning, went to lunch and when I got back I had to retune the same freq I had used a couple hours earlier.   After retuning all works well, for a day, or even several days.    Just occasionally I have to retune a very commonly used freq.   I've maybe switched to that freq 50 times and it worked well until now.

I forget things frequently but I'm a lot older than the tuner.

{CATA1ASC SWT21;}
{CATA1ASC SWT31;}
{CATA1ASC SWT35;}
{CATA1ASC SWT39;}

Jim

I've done this many times.  What goes in the Fkey would be {cata1asc swt11;}
The cata1asc is the N1MM+ macro; you can find it and its syntax on the N1MM+ Macro
page.

The SWT stands for "Tap this key", the 11 is the specific key on the K3 front panel, and the ; is the
signifier to the radio that the command is completed.  All this information is well documented on the
Elecraft Web site, in the Programmer Developer manual.  I believe M1 is 11, M2 is 21, M3 is 31,
and M4 is 41, but I'm not positive.

I now have full support in Pegasus Plus Beta for the Behringer CMD Micro DJ Controller. This device has 10 knobs and 20 buttons offering ultimate knob control for your radio.

All the knobs and buttons are fully user definable. Right now this is available in Beta form for Pegasus Plus on my test page. It is in version 4.23E or later.

These devices are a great bargain and can be found for around $60.

There was no split indication.  I changed transmit to VFO B and we stayed in the selected mode on transmit.  This happened last week, I power cycled the K3S and we were back to normal but that didn't work yesterday.  Apparently this is a random thing.

What the heck?  I was trying to check into a net this evening on 75M and when it was my turn, I transmitted and then discovered the K3S switched to CW .  At first I thought it might have something to do with my amplifier, but same result barefoot.  Then I switched to 40M USB, amp off and the same thing happened - went to CW on Xmit.  What the heck?!

Hi Alan,

With this PCI comport the P3 Utility connected OK but when trying updating said no connection and no way, I repeat it several times with no success, changing to a motherboard comport made the update perfectly. The K3 with the PCI comport not problem updating, so I don't know the difference, I have made all K3 updates from V258 and all P3 also.

Today with the K3 connected to the PCI port I could send macros and some commands from P3 Utility, it was the same from K3 Utility.

Next P3 update I will try again.

Thanks.

K3- Total Loss of Output Power - Solved

N3HEE

I'm posting to document a problem I had with sudden total loss of transmit output power on my K3.  SN#7060. It took a couple days to troubleshoot with Elecraft support.  Hopefully this will save someone allot of time if they experience the same problem.

Without any warning signs or abnormal operating conditions my transmitter output power suddenly went to ZERO.  Of course this was two days before a contest weekend.  A quick internet search revealed a couple of suggestions but did not solve my problem.  I sent email and put a call into Elecraft tech support for help.  Gary responded within the hour with some guidance.  Over the next day and a half I ran the miliwatt tx calibration test and some other basic tests all of which passed.  Per Gary's instructions I then started tracing signals on the low power amplifier module.  There was signal on the input and signal after the FET power amplifier stage. While probing the output circuitry around diode D1 power suddenly appeared on the watt meter.  When I would probe the anode side of D1 output power would return to normal.  It turns out that there was a cold solder joint on D1 and the diode was loose on one side.  I re-soldered D1 and all was well.  This is probably an isolated case but hopefully this will help someone solve a similar problem.

Elecraft support was first rate !!  Gary and Howard were both very prompt with advise and guidance.  I was able to fix my issue without sending the radio back or having them send me parts.  I was back on the air after less than two days of down time.

Exact Steps Taken To Fix Problem

1. Run miliwatt tx calibration.  Requires 50 ohm resistor connected to transverter output jack.

2. Check to make sure LPA FET's are getting warm. Requires removal of bottom cover.  Adjust output power control and mic gain to 0 first.  Set mode to SSB. Tap XMIT and feel FET's get equally warm.  If any are cold then its an indicator of a bad FET.

3. Remove KXV3 module to ensure D5 was not bad.  If D5 is bad it will prevent ALL output power.  Requires removal of sub RX, K3IO module. Must re-install  jumpers w1 and w2.  Must install one jumper at J41 if you had sub rx installed.

4. Trace signals on LPA module. Require removal of KPA100 amplifier module.

I did the following before calling Elecraft.

1.       Restarted K3

2.       Made sure radio was not in TX Test mode

3.       Made sure TX inh was off.  Config Menu item tx inh.

4.       Ran TX calibration.  This fails with error message about not being able to generate 5 watts to perform test.

5.       Reduced power control to 5 watts to see if LPA would work.  No power output.

6.       Reloaded MCU firmware.

7.       Listened to output on another receiver and can hear the K3 transmitter but weak.
