No power out on CW

kc8rp@...

I went to CW and I am not getting any power out, okay on SSB. I have a K3s hooked to my Quaudra amp and a P3. I don't think I changed anything.

Thanks
Richard

Note:  the P3 requires the KXV3(or A or B) module for IF OUT. This is not the KIO3 or later module which contains audio and serial i/o.

Hello Dale,
I am interested in your K3 that is sitting on the shelf. I presume it is in good working order and condition. Could you send me some pictures of your K3?
I'm a little confused does it have the upgraded synthesizer or not? There is conflicting statements.
Does your K3 have the KIO3B I/O installed? USB interface this was required for use with a P3 apparently.
Does your K3 have the KXV3B this is the RX Ant and 2nd pre-amp option? It was included in the K3S so it would not make sense to pull it.
Does your K3 have the  K3DSPUPGD DSP upgrade bd installed?
The VFO tuning mod to reduce noise would be important too.
I'm not worried about the few extra DB one gains in noise figure with the synthesizer upgrade.
Where are you one price?
I would like to pick up a K3, but not one I would have to send off to the factory for extensive out of warranty upgrade and modifications. A lot of guys are asking a lot of money for 6+ yrs old bare bones radio's.  I might as well purchase a bare bones K3S.
I have a KX3, it is a really nice rig, but I am going to sell it.
Thank you for speaking up and I look forward to hearing from you.

Mike,

A bare bones K3 in the configuration you have described is what I am looking for.

My only issue is a lot of guys are asking a lot of money for 6+ yr old K3's that require a lot of work. Once the factory is done with me, I would be in it for another $1,000 in parts and labor. I would be better off buying a bare bones K3S.

SN 2268, mine already had most of those.  I did do the 12 mod and that’s about it except for the synthesizer.

Dale, k9vuj

P.S.  My K3 is sitting on a shelve in the shop, I purchased the K3s and moved the options to it.  I might have my K3 up for sale, it has the 100 watt PA, internal tuner and upgraded synthesizer and standard 2.7 filter.

Re: Remember RF Power out per mode?

ve3ki@...

That's incorrect with the K3 and K3S. You risk having the power output hunting all over the place if you do that, as the K3's firmware valiantly tries despite the low audio input to reach the 100 watt power output it has been commanded to achieve. The power control is not a pot that adjusts the drive, as it might be on an all-analog radio. It supplies an input parameter to the CPU that then adjusts the DSP gain to try to reach the requested power. Follow the instructions from Elecraft and set the audio level to give 4-5 bars on the K3's ALC meter, then use the power control to control the power.

An earlier post suggested that there is no need to reduce power in digital modes, but that's not always the case either. Some digital modes have a high crest factor (ratio of instantaneous peak to average power), and will produce high levels of IMD due to clipping if the finals are run near their (voltage-limited) peak output. This is not a problem in single-carrier modes like RTTY, but it is in modes like PSK31 and MT63. In PSK31, for example, the IMD from the K3 starts to climb if the power is adjusted much above 50-60 watts. To verify this, the actual transmitted IMD in PSK31 can be measured using a PSKMeter or IMD Meter - I used a PSKMeter.

Noooooooooo!

Not with an Elecraft radio.
Set audio level from computer and Lin In control to 4 solid ALC bars with 5th bar flickering. Set power with the power control on radio. May have to reduce the computer signal to get better resolution on Lin In knob.

Except for the K3S I don't think there has been a pcb change in a long time if ever so most K3s have some mods done at the factory or by the board assembly tech.

Hi Rich,

Thanks.  The DISP button did the trick.  Shortly after getting the rig I tapped "Disp" to access the other VFO B data and forgot that a tap on "Disp" would get back to a simple freq read out.

If you don't see an actual frequency in the VFO B display, what are you seeing there? Have you pressed the DISP button to make the VFO B display show something other than a frequency (time, date, voltage, current, temperature, ...)? If you have, tap the DISP button again to get back to the normal VFO B frequency display.

I'd do them all. Most can be done in your shack, but SN 22xx has most of the major changes. Main add-on is the new sync board, highly recommended by most and me too.

Re: [Elecraft_K3] Remember RF Power out per mode?

Not inherently.  You could do that in a macro on the PF or Mx buttons to change mode and power...  but honestly, you don't have to reduce power for the digital modes unless you want to (use only what you need).  Most of them are low RX signal, not low TX modes.  If it takes 0.5 or 600 watts to make the contact, that's what it takes.
