Re: [Elecraft_K3] Re: Genovation keypad and the K3 for macros, solved

Dave (NK7Z)

Hi,

Glad you got it working, and you are most welcome!  I tried like mad to
keep the instruction in the how to clear.  Any suggestions are most
welcome off list on changes to it to make it more clear.

I have something like 45 macros brought out to the keypad at this time,
and it is wonderful.  I almost never touch the rig anymore.

I have added most of the new macros to the spreadsheet which is
available for download on my site at:

http://www.nk7z.net

It is about half way down and is a link in the text.

To move the VOX out to an external key, I'd use the "VX" macro, see
page 45 of the K3 programming manual...

I'd add:

"VX0" to turn it on, and "VX1", to kill it.  No quotes of course.

Have fun, and send me any of your cooler macros, I'll add them to the
spreadsheet for the next fellow to download.

"Cook it in" eh? On 24/7 for 60 days or more maybe eh? Sounds like it worked. It's cooked. Jeezus.

My mid 3,000 serial # K3 doesn't even have 24 hours of "on time" on it. I do have other radios I occasionally use but they don't have the amount of hours your brand new radio has on it either, not even a fraction. I turn them all on for a few minutes every week just to run some juice thru them but rarely have any of them on for more than an hour or two in one session. I just have other things going on, guess this hobby isn't high on my priority list. :)

Hi Dale,

Hadn't considered the light weight of the K3 when shipping - that is a huge bonus.  I've been on a Kenwood hybrid kick to restore a couple of TS-520's and those things weigh over 40 pounds and cost ~$50 for shipping.

I fired up my TS-590s for my backup rig and I am amazed at the difference between the K3s and the 590.  The noise reduction DSP in the K3s is significantly better than the 590 and the 590's noise floor is much higher than the K3s. After about ten minutes of listening around 20M with the 590 I started wondering how I can live with the degraded performance for three or four weeks while my K3s is in the hospital.

Something else I'm going to have withdrawal over is the P3 panadapter - I now consider it an essential part of my Elecraft system and won't ever be without it.

John,

They will take care of it.

Also consider this, if it had been a Icom7800 or the big Kenwood, Yaesu the shipping and insurance would have set you back at least a couple hundred one way.

That is a big advantage with the Elecraft gear.

Thanks for the reply, Phil.  I went to HRO as well, but notice they don't list availability at any of their stores.  HRO places a green check at any of their stores where the item is available.

I have no experience with the ARI-500, and I don't know what you are connecting it to, other than your K3s, so I don't really know if that helps or not.

Dang - my K3s went dark :-(

bucket@...

Put it together 11/2015 and have had it running pretty much 7x24 to 'burn' it in.  Came into my radio room this morning and found a dead K3s .  Here's what I just sent Elecraft support:

I'm going to go into K3s withdrawal!  Put the K3s/100 together I think 11/2015 and have been leaving it on 24 hours a day to cook it in.  Came into the radio room this morning and the K3s was dark, no light, no display, zip, nada.  I was hoping against hope the Samlex power supply croaked but that was not the situation, good 14V going in to the rig.  Continuity check of the 20 amp breaker was good.

I checked the resistance of the 12V in on the main board on the trace side and I have a direct short but I have no idea if that is normal or not.  I checked voltage regulators U12 and U13 for resistance as shown in the assembly manual and we're okay.  I applied power to the rig and there is zero voltage at any of the regulator leads.

I wonder if something did go shorted and caused the power supply to crowbar.

Now I have to fire up my TS-590 (things could be worse I suppose...)

Elecraft Price Increase Alert for Feb 4th

Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft

Early notice for K3 Yahoo readers:

We're finally implementing the planned price changes that we first mentioned late last year. We ended up delaying that change due to both the large holiday season order rush and several ham shows, both of which always generate a lot of sales sales activity and keep our sales team very busy.

As noted before, our costs are going up as our vendors increase their prices to us and our labor costs also increase. (Its a never ending battle to keep costs down as economic activity has picked up the last two years.) We've been absorbing all of these increases, but now we have hit the point where we  must increase prices slightly on a number of our products.

The prices will change on next Thursday, Feb. 4th.  Our on-line order forms will update with the new pricing at that time.

Please resist the urge to call or email our sales / support people about which specific products will be changing or how much the changes will be, as they do not have this information. (We're still in the middle getting everything entered.)

Of course, all orders received -prior- to the Feb 4th increase will be charged at the lower pre-increase pricing when they ship.

Eric
