David, after installing the K3 utility and copying the latest versions from Elecraft site, i've just a last question:
Can i update all FW or are some updates only compatible with K3 hardware modifications ?
Thank you very much for your help.

Hello,

I've an "old" K3 (#1212) and also an old FW:

dr 00.00
d1 02.49
d2 00.00
FL 01.06
uC 03.68

No hardware modifications were done.
To use a particular SW, i need the SMH command and i've only the SM recognized with the current FW status.

What procedure should i follow to update until SMH command active ?

Thank you for your help.

Does the P3 work (show the 2 meter band) with the K3S with the 2 meter module?

Hallo Mike,

i simply don`t know what make this hiss.
One interesting thing, i forgot to tell, is that hiss is constant present but slightly vary in strength.
I have try to put some resistance in series with this headphones and this helps, but, that is es you cure something and you don`t know the relay cause.

Re: [Elecraft_K3] K3 - background hiss (noisy K3) - update

Mel Farrer <farrerfolks@...>

Might I ask if you have tried to isolate the source?  In the tube days a gentle hiss was attributed to the electron bombardment of the plate from the cathode and was never "completely" eliminated.  While we are now in the days of SS, that issue is mute.  However, I suggest as mentioned earlier, that you might have a external source of the "hiss".

I would connect a scope to the audio output through a 1:1 audio isolation transformer and determine the frequency bandwidth and characteristics of the "hiss".  Then start isolating the K3 from all connections down to running it on a floating battery.

I do not have your "hiss" and I am totally battery powered from solar.  That includes shorting the antenna terminals after reading your thread.  Hope you find the source,

Mel, K6KBE

I tried this on k3 5047 using some cheap earbuds and I plugged in my dusty cm500's.

I can barely detect anything, even less so with the cm500. Plugged into the external speaker jack.

Is it possible you are picking up something through a ground loop condition?

Hi,

Seems, that is still, huge confusion about that, so i will try to formulate a problem on simply way:

With low impedance earphones plugged into the audio jack on the K3, you can hear a really annoying noise (hiss) even with the AF and RF volume set to zero(CCW). This audio hiss has a constant level, is added to the audible RF noise and can prevent one from hearing weak  signals on an otherwise quiet band.

That hiss has nothing to do with K3 receiver or settings - simply is permanent present.
This indicate that something must be wrong with earphones amplifier LM4811MM, and that is
odd, because LM4811MM seems to be an high quality chip, designed exactly to work with low impedance earphones , with a minimal amount of external components?
My question is:
is, in the mean time, known any hardware (or anything else) modification for that issue?

He already has a k3, so I guess he's asking for advice on the k3s with the kind of operating he does.

I don't know if a k3s would be that beneficial someone not doing cw. What do others think. He already has not found the need for additional filters in his k3 it seems.

Apparently he's already doing MARS on his k3.

So, for voice and digital will the k3s be "noticeably" ahead of his K3 and why?Again he apparently has not found a need for narrow filters.

His method was to establish the peak power and then to raise up the lower levels sounds to  a higher level. The great advantage of this method is the in band IMD is greatly reduced compared to the limiting peak method. He also added a variable high frequency boost system so the more the dynamic range was reduced then the more the HF tones of the voice were boosted (within limits).

Automatic high boost with speech processing on is present FT1000MP MKV. Also in KX3. It is an interesting technique when the microphone has a good frequency response to begin with. When the mike is bassy and requires an equalization anyway, an extra boost may help or not.

One of the first things I read in the users manual is 'Select the band and set the power setting'. Does the K3 save the power setting for the 2 meter band AND the 10 meter band separately or must I reset the power each time I switch to the XV144?
