The power supply upgraded to support the P3.  This K3 includes the new KSYN3A on both

receivers,  KXV3A upgrade for great weak signal near strong signal reception, and K3 DSP Upgrade

for better audio response.  Standard roofing Filter for 2.7 Mhz in both receivers.

It has KBPF3A that improved out of ham band sensitivity on the SUB receiver - good for SWL and 600 meters.  This gives you two antenna jacks for transmit/receive plus a receive only antenna jack.

Sorry Knut,
I think we must be talking at cross purposes, or I am being thick...

The LO cut example you give is still 100Hz steps. How do I get 50Hz steps on either the LO or HI CUT ?

Maybe it is in the manual and I missed it.

Download the manuals from Elecraft web site and familiarize your self with the procedure.

Are removing the sub anyway.

I stripped my K3 down to main and 400 he filter and left in the DVR as o am keeping it for portable use with my club. Put everything else into my new K3S.

If you mean filters, there are good instructions in the manuals step by step on how to instal filters in both main and sub receivers.

Mic - VOX interaction

Wes

Setup for RTTY using AFSK and VOX was easy with my original K3. Not so much with the K3S.

What I've noted is that with the new internal sound card the Line Level is much fussier and the apparent gain requires lowering the Windows slider to about 25% vs. 50% on the laptop sound card used with the old K3. This isn't a surprising or insurmountable issue, but does make it more difficult to get a flickering ALC bar. Without care I get a hard over 7 bars reading.

But a more puzzling issue is the fact that while doing this experiment, I discovered that the VOX gain is dependent on the Line Level/Mic gain. This has made setup even more hair triggered. If I lower the Line Level to get flickering bars, I must increase VOX gain and then it's way too sensitive on SSB.

After investigation, I've found this to be true on both radios, although I never noted it before on the old K3. IMHO VOX should operate in parallel with the TX audio, not in series.

Perhaps one of the geniuses at Elecraft could fix this in firmware, if not could we at least have VOX gain saved by mode?

Hi,

The LO CUT can be set to go either 100, 200, 300 or 50, 150, 250 and so on. If you want to switch from the one mode to the other, go to SHIFT/WIDTH mode and change the width one click, then go back to LOCUT/HICUT. The same applies to the HI CUT.

Hi,

A change that I would like to see implemented in the K3/K3S filter pass band setup would permit the control granularity to be changed in the SSB mode.

At present the pass band step size can be only be changed in the CW and Data modes.

Although the SHIFT step is 50Hz and about right,  the WIDTH, LO and HI CUT are all fixed at 100Hz.

I find under certain circumstances the CUT steps, particularly the LO one are too coarse.

An additional selection in the CONFIG:PB CTRL menu to allow changes to the
granularity in SSB mode would be most welcome.

Oh you will have to take out the 2d rx.  There are filters in the 2d receiver and the main filters are underneath the 2d rx.

do you mean the filters?  You need to take the bottom and top cover off.  There is one screw that holds the filter to the board (maybe two screws)

I would like to see the NB set between memory changes or saved in memory better stated. Also when the unit is turned on. I can never run my K3 without the NB.

K3s noise floor

kenw817821@...

The K3s is supposed to have a lower noise floor.  How much lower?  Will that be significant?

Re: KS3 Kit

Petr Ourednik

Hi all,

I do not understand all of the huge discussion about something which
cost $25-30 (compare to your invoice for K3S kit...) and which solving
the ESD task forever...;) but ok...

1. The top layer must be dissipative
2. The bottom layer must be conductive
3. Its nice when the top layer is chemical, overheat and cut
resistant...
4. Mat must be connected to ground thru 1.5M resistor, NOT ditectly in
order to thru body current limitation if an accident!
5. Wristband is connected to mat in normal cases also thru 1.5M
resistor.

Just few basic hints for all who would not like to just faith to be
"lucky user" when working with boards like K3S kit etc.

More info you can find here in my article:

You can drop me an email if you want to help with buying the
professional grade ESD mat complete set for your safe bench works on K3S
etc.

You want a dissipative surface not a highly conductive one.

Personally I think a better solution would be to work on a metal surface that is grounded. Fashion a wrist strap with a 1Mohm in series if desired or be very careful to touch the metal surface often or continuously. I play around with a lot of boards and bought my anti-static mat off the internet for about $25. Worth while for me but maybe not so much if you do not do much board handling/building.

Here is the link.  The shipping brings it us to the $16 level.  You will need to buy a wrist strap with a 1meg resistor to complete the work station.

Many thanks to all who have responded to my Antistatic problem with the K3S Kit.  I finally found a 12"X22" mat on Ebay for $16 that has electrical specifications that fit the bill for a true antistatic surface.  I can easily handle all the static sensitive boards in the K3S.  During my work career I have seen two many cross section, where ESD obliterated an otherwise good device, to fail and be sure not to inadvertently damage the radio my wife agreed that I could purchase.

All of your ideas have helped me and I possibly could have handled things without the ESD Mat.
