Need volunteers to try an even better version of KAT500 firmware (rev. 1.63) -- more accurate initial tunes

Hi all,

We just posted a new beta-test release of KAT500 firmware (rev 1.63) that does a better job on initial tunes than the previous release (1.58). We'd really like to get this firmware into production quickly, but to do that we'll need some testing help.

If you can spare a few minutes, please do the following:

1) Save your current configuration so that you can return to it if necessary

2) Install KAT500 rev. 1.63 (follow instructions for beta releases)

3) Erase memories on at least one band where the tuner has to work to find solutions (that’s 160 through 40 meters for most of us)

4) Do some full-search tunes.

The KAT500 should find very good tuning solutions (within its specified impedance-matching limits, of course). Please send me your results.

Thanks--

K3 Mic Connector Question

Torrey Mitchell <torreym@...>

Recently I’ve had a problem with the front panel mic connector on my K3 (serial 54xx).  With a mic attached to the front connector, if I simply touch the connected mic plug or even apply the tiniest bit of lateral pressure, the K3 is keyed and all sorts of noise and buzzing appears on the transmitted audio.

It is behaving like there are one or more loose or shorted connections behind the panel.  I recall that mic connector comes preinstalled on the front panel PC board, so that would imply that one or more solder connections are poor or broken.  Am I thinking correctly?

It’s been 3 years since I assembled my K3, so I do not have a sense of how difficult it might be to examine the mic connector and its solder connections.  Is it difficult to pull off the front panel to examine the mic connector and its solder connections?

If not, maybe it’s best to ask Elecraft to repair it.

Advice please.

Thanks and 73,

Torrey N9PY

Now that I finally have been dumped into the new Yahoo pit, would it be possible for whomever is in charge to change the forum photo to maybe a shot of the K3 line instead of those dreadful straw hats?

Win4K3Suite Server now supports remote Spectrum Scopes with the KX3 and LP-Pan for the K3

tblahovici@...

Hi,
The latest release of Win4K3Suite Server now supports remote spectrum scopes at 44.1 kHz for the KX-3 and LP-Pan.
The documentation is at http://va2fsq.com/?page_id=945.

Please note that Win4K3Suite can also be integrated with NAP3, HDSDR, and other SDR type software by using Win4K3Suite's AUX / CAT port.

The remote capability applies to these third party software packages as well.

Thanks for all your support!

To follow up on Matt's idea you could use a surplus Ammo box. They are waterproof.

First aid box is already cracked, darn.  Looking at a utility box for outside mounting, weather proof and has a snap on clear cover.  Light weight.  BL-2 will fit in.  Hummm.

Hi Mel,

I use an LMB clamshell-style box, made of metal.  The box itself isn't weatherproof, and I've sealed it up around the edges with Gorilla tape [the water-repellent kind], plus RTV around the BNC exit point.  The only caveat with using a metal enclosure is that the BL2 should be mounted 1/2" or more away from any metal except at the BNC end of it.

I brought the balanced signals out through a couple of center insulators.  These are available from DX Engineering, last time I looked.

I am looking for a weather protector for the balun.  On portable uncertain weather, I would rather have some protection.  I have seen a plexiglass one, but it has holes and doesn't look like you can switch it easily.  Any one found a good solution, like a clamshell enclosure????  Thanks.

Hello Mel,

I don't have one of those, but as a suggestion that comes to mind, how about go to Home Depot, Lowes etc and get some PVC and end caps, it's cheap and easy to find the right size,, you might have to cut it down but should make a good weather protector, let your imagination run wild, hi.

Win4K3Suite now supports the KXPA100, LP-Pan, the SoftRockII Lite and MicroHam routers

tblahovici@...

Version 1.45 of Win4K3Suite now has a number of major additions and improvements.
Support is now available for the KXPA100 for the KX3, integrating the amplifier directly into the user interface with Temperature, Power and SWR displays.  Both the KXAT100 and KAT500 are supported with the KX3.

The KX3 spectrum scope has been improved as well.  ASIO driver support has been dropped due to some cases of performance issues with the spectrum. The use of Windows WDM drivers has eliminated this problem.

Win4K3Suite now also supports TelePosts LP-PAN and the SoftRock II Lite Panadapters.

Support for the MicroHam router is also now available.  The following devices are now supported.

MK2R and MK2R+
MicroKeyer II
DigiKeyer II
Station Master and Station Master Deluxe.

Please make sure you have updated your MicroHam router software to the current release.  Much thanks goes to Joe Subich who made this possible.

This version of Win4K3Suite now operates in native 64bit mode eliminating a number of issues with third party video capture devices.  It will of course also operate in 32 bit mode.  Users of  32 bit operating system please contact me off list for specific instructions.

Due to the migration to 64 bits, there is a new 30 day trial.  Register users will also have to re-enter their license codes.

The first independent review of Win4K3Suite is located here:  http://k4mtx.wordpress.com/2014/01/12/win4k3suite-kx3/

Heil Classic ICM mic with K3: anyone using this combination?

Bud WO4K

Back in 2009 I bought a Heil Classic ICM with desk boom and foot switch. This is the mic that was designed to look like the 1930's RCA 74B ribbon mic. Heil made three versions of this mic. This one has two mic elements, an electret designed for the older Icom tranceivers (I was using an IC-751A at the time) and a wide-range dynamic element. When I got my K-Line I could never get very good audio reports using this mic, using either narrow or wide element. So for the past couple of years this has been operating desk eye candy only. I would like to give it another try and wonder if anyone else has been able to use this mic successfully. I know that the settings will be different for each voice, but I sure would like to get internal audio equalizer settings from someone on this forum who is using this mic as a starting point. Right now my rig is setup for my Heil ProSet, which works well. Thoughts? Advice? Settings?

Thanks,
Frank
